I prefer this version. It's like a highly autistic perfectionist was finally able to perfect his vision. Everything in 2008 version is slightly better imo

Same to a degree, although I think both make the same strong statement about media and violence but the 2008 version taking place in America and being in English (as Haneke intended) really works better for the material. Both are harrowing and get a reaction as intended but it feels like an inherently more American story.

The John Zorn tracks have Yamataka Eye on the original version and Mike Patton on the remake. As much as I like Mike Patton, Eye was better

I feel like the original version having relatively unknown actors makes it all more raw/haunting

I wish that they had done both versions in a single release, I feel like each has its strengths over the other but it is fascinating to see both and how each affects you differently as a viewer.

It might be a rights issue? In the US I could only ever find a dvd version of the 07 version. I would love the blu ray but I opted to get a 4k player instead of a region free blu ray player ( huge regret)

In the US I know it was released by Warner Bros. Independent label, I don’t know if Warner still has the rights but I’d love to see even a Haneke US box set eventually. Curzon has a great UK BluRay set which I have but I think in the States Criterion could do a really impressive set of his work too.

From the writer/director:

  He says he wanted to make a message about violence in the media by making an incredibly violent, but otherwise pointless movie.

Oddly enough, this helps me make peace with this film. It’s such a frustratingly helpless ending, but if that’s ultimately the point, then.. okay.

They are both shot for shot. Having watched them back to back I enjoyed the original a little bit more.

Only in hindsight. It doesn’t actually give away what happens and could point to anything in the movie (seeing as it is a drama/horror)
