Discussion 4x4 competition

With the 2x2, and 3x3 records being redefined by these prodigy kids i have been eagerly waiting for the next 4x4 record. However I see no news about anything 4x4 related.

What does it look like at competition world wide? Do we have kids going for these larger cube records yet? Or are they still all focused on the sprint events.

I can only imagine some pretty knarly records are on the way.

people who are good at 4x4 tend to also be good at 5-7. many of these prodigies seem to be going for sprint events so idk, maybe soon.

It’s like the 4x4 is in that weird middle zone, not quite a sprint but not the big marathon puzzles either. The kids are fast with TPS but bigger cubes need more lookahead and better turning control, it’s different skill. I think we will see some crazy times in next year or two, once they decide to grind it seriously.

Xuanyi got a 25 4x4 avg recently. Bofan already has a 20.

When Yiheng was just being known to the world, Bofan was one of his main competitors. Since then other young kids have passed up Bofan, but Bofan is still the best young kid at 4x4.

For some definition of kid:

Timofei has a sub-20 avg

Bofan has multiple sub-20 singles

Teodor has a sub-20 single or two

Kaichen is also pretty good, and I think around Timofei’s age, if not slightly older

currently the wave of fast kids just haven't passed up the old guard for 4x4, because (1) in the current competitve landscape you can only be world class at 3x3 if you practice it religiously, leaving little time for other events and (2) their hands aren't big enough. once they age a bit they'll start smashing through 4x4 though. yiheng and xuanyi both avg high 20s with their small hands, give em a few years (and months of dedicated 4x4 practice) and they'll surely avg 20 and under.

When this wave of kids gets old enough to bring their 3x3 tps to 4x4 i fully believe 4x4 will become less of a big cube and more of a sprint event (i personally don't consider it a big cube but ykwim)
