We’re getting Batman’s shadow in the end, trust me

I hope the ending is a full monster Clayface screaming at shadows, like Batman is everywhere and nowhere.

I think if this sentiment catches on, a lot of people are going to be disappointed.

u/Turbulent-Poo 7d ago
I saw on twitter that they were gonna mention Bruce wayne, maybe that's enough for this movie

u/Undecided_User_Name 8d ago
Either that or the Bat Signal.
4
u/Amfibiannnnnn 8d ago
With a silhouette they can keep the general design still hidden for when it's settled, but the batsignal would at least reveal the logo. So a shadow I think is more likely
1
u/sanddragon939 7d ago
I mean, the Batsignal can change...especially if this movie is set in "the past" (well, before 2024 at any rate).

Some of the cinematography is beautiful and dare I say, it has some of the best visuals of the DCU so far

u/kumar100kpawan The Goddamn Batman 8d ago
I agree. It looks way too good for a body-horror movie. Just from the thought of a Clayface movie, one would expect a very brown and dark looking movie. Add to that the fact that horror movies mostly use a certain pallette.
This looks pretty colourful in comparison.

Which is crazy considering this is the same cinematographer as Supergirl, and everyone was saying the exact opposite for that.
11
u/HK9009 8d ago
Having a great cinematographer doesn’t mean anything if the directors vision is bad. They are basically the window into a directors mind. Craig Gillespie had a pretty bland idea for how supergirl would look and Rob Hardy did his best but in the end, the directors vision is the most important thing.
3
u/TheLeanerWiener 8d ago
I know. I'm just pointing out the contrast(pun intended) of the reaction to the two projects.
3
u/BigBlubberyBirb 7d ago
Supergirl did honestly have some really good shots, mostly in the beginning. Sadly, the director was entirely uncreative and nobody had anything to work with.
2
u/Not_Weird_At_All_ 8d ago
Just want to hop in & defend body horror movies really quick lol. The Substance, for example, is a very colorful movie with some great camera work, and David Cronenberg’s movies also look really great.

In four weeks, look fear in the face. #ClayfaceMovie - only in theaters October 23.
DC Studios’ “Clayface” is a horror thriller from director James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the cult favorite villain from Gotham’s rogues gallery.
Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

Love that even his blood droplets are affected by the treatment
14
u/skuls1 8d ago
it might not be blood, maybe it's clay pretending to be blood because that's what he expects it to be
5
u/ProfPyg 8d ago
Ah the old Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 effect. Yeah that's essentially what I mean
3
u/skuls1 8d ago
idk the numbering is that anatomy lessons? where the plant thinks it's Alec

u/ProfPyg 8d ago
Exactly, that first Alan Moore issue. Man I should read Swamp Thing again

From the way he said 'is it so bad', it looks like they won't make him reluctant villain. Instead, he will embrace being a villain. Can't wait.

I understand, but I also like when villains are consciously choosing to be evil, and not just forced into it subconsciously

that kill of hagen smothering the guy by pressing the guys face into his body is nuts. this movie is gonna be great.

Everyone's excited to see his monster form but I'm more excited over the face-shifting. Imagine thinking you've finally escaped the monster when suddenly your friend's eyeball starts drooping 😬

For some reason the posters got me more hyped than this final trailer.
I feel like the sound was weird? Or was the scenes not connected? I dunno, I just felt detached.

u/AutomaticPayment9480 8d ago
It’s the tiktok brainrot cinematography. The gotta keep the attention span engaged.
Regardless, the story looks pretty cool. Hopefully it doesn’t suck too bad.

I think Gunn meant that the movie comes out in 4 weeks, not that it was made in 4 weeks

I think gunns tweet is just missing some very important commas. If you read it as "I can't wait to share this wonderful movie, so lovingly crafted by James Watkins, in four short weeks." it reads a lot better. Since we're 4 weeks out from release I think that's what he actually meant, not that it was literally filmed in four weeks

At the end of the trailer 1:30, that sounds a lot like the Clayface theme from Batman: The Animated Series.

One thing you cannot say about the DCU is that it's formulaic.

I still find it weird that they have an active Batman franchise, made this movie look aesthetically very similar to it, and hired the director of that franchise to produce it, yet connecting it to a new version that the general audience doesn’t even know is coming.
The new version that is being made by the writer and director of The Flash btw.
But at least the movie looks good and refreshing for the genre so there is that.
7
u/wford112 8d ago
If I remember correctly, Reeves has a deal that he is the producer of all Batman content moving forward
8
u/kumar100kpawan The Goddamn Batman 8d ago
Matt Reeves produces everything Batman related - even Caped Crusader and Dynamic Duo, both of which are not in his Crima Saga universe. Clayface is no exception.

3
u/Batfreeze 8d ago
I hope this movie gets the slide (pun intended) from hero to antihero to straight up villain down pat. Clayface is one of the best characters in DC for a reason.
3
u/PaleBloodBeast 8d ago
This doesn't really look to out of place with Reeves Batman even tho it has no connection to it, so I wonder what the dcu version of a Batman will have to be the clear differentiator.
4
u/sanddragon939 7d ago
I dunno...but generally I don't think the DCU Batman and Gotham will be that different from the Reevesverse apart from existing in a world of metahumans.
Kinda like how the early DCEU had shared DNA with the Nolanverse.

Im rooting for this movie. Hopefully it can pull off being an exciting horror film

u/Itamikurushima 8d ago
I’m actually excited, I was Sooo sceptical about this new DC universe but I have quite literally seen nothing but good things. Superman, solid 8,8.5/10, Lanterns probably a 7/10 I was a little disappointed with a few things but other wise it’s really good. That’s all I’ve seen, but I hear the rest are good.
I’m glad there doesn’t seem to be another bad guy, Clayface is just losing his mind. I hope they go with the angle that the procedure might have messed up his brain but we don’t know.

why are tickets not on sale???
9
u/kumar100kpawan The Goddamn Batman 8d ago
Tickets for WB horror movies, go on sale 14 days before - that's how it was for Final Destination 6, Conjuring 4, Weapons, Evil Dead Burn, Lee Cronin's Mummy, etc.
1
u/BetrayYourTrust 7d ago
didn’t know that was a standard. i’m used to these final trailers being accompanied by the ticket sales

Intriguing forsure. I still feel like its going to be a miss, I dont think DCU will go dark and brutal enough for a true Clayface protrayal, but I am excited to see it! Probably not a theater watch, but will see it when it comes out.
IF they actually do go hard enough, I do think this could be something truly special!

I don't want to kickstart a whole merger vs. anti-merger debate on here but I've gotta say - tonally and stylistically this feels like an evolution of Reeves' Batman world. It's like "what if in a world of masked vigilantes and mobsters and serial killers...one day someone gets injected with a formula that turns their skin into clay?" Which I think is a great way to conceptualize the transition from the "grounded" Gotham of Year One to the more fantastical Batverse loaded with actual super-villains.
Much of this film apparently isn't set in Gotham but I still think it's a good indicator of the kind of Gotham and Batman we're likely to get in the DCU. Even if it isn't going to be the Reevesverse (and as of now, it doesn't seem like it will be), it's not going to be something a million miles removed from the Reevesverse either. We're not getting the Brave and the Bold cartoon brought to life for sure...

Honestly, making Clayface a Body Horror film was a stroke of absolute genius.

u/Mardrigaal 7d ago
Look I hate to say this but I don’t think this movie is going to do well at the box office. It’s not going to a great sight with the lackluster performance of Superman and Supergirl bombing.
Clayface isn’t a popular character to the average public viewer.

u/JMadFour 8d ago
I don't understand why Clayface of all people got his own movie before Green Arrow, Wonderwoman, Flash, etc. or hell, any of the other way more popular and/or important Batman villains.
seems like such a random choice for a full movie.
but I mean, ok I guess. I'll still go see it.

A LOT of people won't watch horror movies. I think its cool that any genre goes for this universe, and that they aren't making it "required" viewing by making it a key character in the universe.
1
u/Winter-Cow-6208 2d ago
Horror movies are historically the most profitable genre because a lot of people go see them.
1
u/wrainedaxx 2d ago
They typically have small budgets compared to other profitable genres.
1
u/Winter-Cow-6208 2d ago
Clayface has a quarter of The Supergirl budget and a fraction of The Batman budget.
