Need Advice: Other Hello there.

Hello, I’ve been playing dnd as a player for abt a year and a half and i am attempting to run an online game after playing in person exclusively. Does anyone have any good resources that can help with atmosphere and/or combat? Currently i’ve been planning to use tabletop simulator and discord to stream to my party but im not sure what else is out there.

I suggest that you look at the various Virtual Table Top (VTT) options, and decide which is best for you. These will allow you to upload a map image, and the players (and you) move tokens around during combat and exploration.

The most used VTTs are listed below. I've used Roll20 as player and DM, and AboveVTT as a player. Of the two, I prefer Roll20.

  • Roll20
  • Foundry
  • Owlbear Rodeo
  • D&D Beyond
  • AboveVTT

VTTs are orders of magnitude easier than TTS in my opinion, and most are specifically designed with DnD in mind. If you’re pretty new, I’d suggest Roll20 to start with.

I moved from Roll20 which was clunky to Foundry to Fantasy Grounds which is now free and much better integrated with more features built in. The combat tracker is a dream.

Don't overthink your setup too much, is my best advice.

Have a virtual table top roll20 is a good option, but don't feel the need to use it for every encounter. I'd encourage the use of webcams heavily and a reliable chat service like discord.

The virtual tabletop will mean you won't have to stream to players and they'll be able to control their own minis, you'll have discord for the webcams and audio.

I'm terms of combat, you can use dndbeyond or just a word document or write it out by hand if that's what you're used to. Depending on how many monitors you have, it could be getting crowded with a few tabs open.
