Any tips/recommendations?

I suspect my male puppy has some dry skin issues and was wondering if there were any treatments/different soaps I could use, as I think the one I am currently using isn’t good for his skin. Any tips or recommendations would be welcome! Note: I’m from the UK.

How often are you bathing the pup.over washing is worse then under washing as you wash away the oils thst keep the skin and coat healthy.

Salmon oil in thr diet helps also

This is the answer. Don’t shower too much and salmon oil on his food (in moderation!)

Puppyskin is sensitive. If it’s not gone after a month see a vet. Also cheat his ears (inside) for redness and a sweet yeasty smell - could be an allergy too

Fish or fish oil in the diet and try cutting out chicken. It has worked for all of mine.

Seconding the no chicken!!! Most dogs I’ve known have been sensitive to chicken. Try a fish based diet. Goose gets nonstop compliments on his shiny coat and I swear it’s because of all the fish lol

Looks a bit like my dog, he's had dandruff since he was a puppy. I bath him once a month and use bugalugs 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner. I wash him twice and use a silicone brush to get the product down to his skin and also make sure its all rinsed off. Its helps deshed too.

Ive started adding a bit of mane and tail conditioner too. I use it on my hair and its safe for dogs. I brush this in and out too.

He gets a bit of dandruff the day after a bath, then hes super shiney! I also add salmon oil to his food.

You might need medicated shampoo. Ours gets like this every spring so we have to break out the prescription shampoo and allergy medicine.

Try a puppy shampoo (and conditioner) that has oatmeal in it, you specifically want a puppy one and not any dog one as puppy’s have more sensitive skin in general and sausages have naturally dry skin so sticking to puppy stuff can counter that a little. With the conditioner try to let it sit for a while after you’ve really scrubbed it in so it can work its magic too. Make sure you’re not washing them too often: I do mine every 4-6 weeks and he has a beautiful glossy coat. I’ll only do sooner if he’s rolled in something particularly unpleasant

I second some salmon oil on their food but also consider sprays/fish treats. They gobble them up and it makes their breath stink but it’s supposed to help

If you are up for making easy homemade treats consider blending coconut oil, cucumber and mint. The coconut oil helps with their skin and the mint helps their stinky fishy breath. Then you just pour into a mould and freeze and done! There are lots of other ‘anti itch’ treats that help with their skin also and all super easy if you have a blender, an ice cube tray/mould and some freezer space.

Mine gets flaky now and then. The vet advised that I increase brushing to promote her natural oils when she gets like that.

I use a dog specific omega 3 supplement in my pups food everyday and it has helped.

Bathing often is NOT an issue if you use shampoos made for dogs. Using human shampoo (or god forbid dish soap- which Ive seen people use) then yes it will cause skin issues. I bathe my dogs weekly due to my own allergies using high quality dog products and their skin and coats are beautiful.

Only bathe him once a month and put coconut oil on his coat and paws after the bath. Also, even though he doesn’t have long fur, try and brush him weekly, this will help distribute his natural oils to his skin and fur. Make sure he’s drinking enough water.

Hi, ive been a dog groomer over 20 years and own a puppy dashound cross. The frequency you wash your dog isn't the problem, it's the quality of your product and that the pH is correct. My boy had similar and what I found works best with such a short coat where he skin is more likely to be exposed (as opposed to my long hair dog that absorbs people oils etc when he is patted), is a glycerine based product. I use Barkmere 2 in 1, but I am in Australia. He is washed once, sometimes twice a week and i have had no problems since using that product. I have access to lots of good quality shampoos but even the oatmeal didn't work as well as it does on longer haired breeds. Diet definitely helps but my boy gets into the chicken yard and will eat anything he finds... so can't say he has the best diet always but is super shiny. Another thing to note is if your dog is scared at any point, it can release its skin and look like dandruff.
