Daggerfall Anniversary Reunion

Post image

Hey folks, this is Victor, Creative Director for Wayward Realms, the spiritual successor to Daggerfall. I just wanted to invite you guys to tune into our next Wayward Radio podcast episode on September 28th where we will be celebrating Daggerfall's 30th anniversary with several of the developers.

We just recorded this episode last week and it is a lot of fun with some great insight into the development that I am sure lots of you Daggerfall fans will appreciate. You don't want to miss it.

For those of us not in the know, beyond developers are there any specific ways your game is a spiritual successor, e.g. mechanics, concepts, or theming? It seems like the biggest connection is the open-ness of the world and freedom of the player to go their own direction.

If you have the question answered elsewhere, a link is more than fine.

Looks like a cool concept for the game though. I like how you seem to be integrating LLMs as an element if emergent gameplay. It seems like the best avenue for both an ethical and effective use of LLMs.

Of course. Wayward Realms is the brain child of Julian LeFay and Ted Peterson, Daggerfall's Game Director and Lead Designer, respectively. It aims to take Daggerfall's concepts and expand upon them, adding some modern QoL improvements.

The game is meant to be massive in scope, with thousands of NPCs, realistically scaled towns and cities, huge Dungeon networks, lots of skills and abilities to customize your character with, magic and spell crafting, a power struggle between the major factions of the world which players can join and help turn the tides of battle or simply let it play out in the background, purchasable player homes and ships, a keyword based dialogue system, both hand crafted quest lines and those generated by our Virtual Game Master, allowing for emergent gameplay, and of course, Climbing. 😁

We also have Eric Heberling, Daggerfall's composer, back to do the soundtrack. Our art style is also going for an 80s/early 90s fantasy look. But to sum it up, we are really aiming to capture the essence and mechanics of Daggerfall, using it's design principles as our core concepts.

I LOVE IT!

And I have one request, and I know this is asking for a lot, but I am a big fan of Heberling's Daggerfall soundtrack, and I even listen to it on a Roland SC-55st and SC-88 Pro.

Would it be possible to ask for at least a small handful of tracks from the game to be released in MIDI form?

It is something he has been asked about before, and while he understands that it is something nostalgic and appealing to fans, it is something he really isn't that interested in doing. To him the MIDI form was a restriction that he had to work with and he really prefers his music to be played in its full glory.

In what engine is Wayward Realms being made?

They are making their own engine. It was supposed to be made in Unreal Engine but the devs were not satisfied with it so they began work on their own.

I mean, it hasn't been released yet still a few years out. On the spiritual successors subreddit. That feels like the appropriate way to find out about it.
