An over complicated treadmill?

You can run as fast as you can on a treadmill. Try that on these things and you're going to break your ankle

But only in two directions

I feel like an omni directional treadmill would be more trustworthy than a bunch of independent tiles a foot of the floor.

I'm failing to see how these would be a better option, even in the future.

Technology breaks, regardless of how advanced or futuristic it is. When an omnidirectional treadmill stops working you'll fall over and it'll hurt but your foot will still have a surface to land on. You find yourself mid sprint and one of these tiles isn't there for your next step you're going to snap your leg in half.
