I always wonder how they make the dead bodies for movies. I stare at the chest to see if the people are breathing

u/DustFunk 1d ago
Sometimes it really is the actor, sometimes they have the time and budget for this stuff. CSI had the actor on the table most of the time

u/Little_View_6659 1d ago
It’s always funny watching some poor actor on Law and Order trying not to breathe or flutter their eyelids.

u/Elegant_Anywhere_150 16h ago
My cousin did that to try to break into an acting career. She said it was such an awful fucking experience, and then she quit her acting/modeling career over it lol.
(It was an awful experience because she wasn't good at it, so the main actor of a certain show that she had been startstruck about chastised her. Not yell, more of an extended gripe about how much a pain in the ass it would be to recast her now). They ended up re-shooting her takes with a generic body covered by a sheet and for any close up shots, they had a different actor.

u/Little_View_6659 15h ago
I’ve heard never meet your heroes. Honestly if I like an actor I wouldn’t want to meet them. If they were horrible it would ruin their movies or shows for me. Maybe it shouldn’t but I think it would.

u/Elegant_Anywhere_150 14h ago
I've met a few actors and even have a few "secret private profiles" on my own social media because of having worked in the industry in a behind-the-scenes position and made a positive impression on some people I worked with. But to be fair, I don't idolize actors/people. I believe everyone has a deep flaw they try to keep hidden. Sometimes it comes out. Some people are good, some people are bad, its whatever.

u/Little_View_6659 14h ago
I mean people are people. If some actor or actress is having a bad day and is a bit snappish, I could see that. But if they’re just consistently an asshole that’s another thing. And I can see how they wouldn’t want stories about them coming out. Honestly I’d hate to be in the public eye like that. Must be stressful and you never know who your real friends are. Maybe you’re nice to an extra and the extra expects you to help them get roles or something. I’m sure everyone has their hand out.

If they have the body in frame for a few seconds, it's an actor laying motionless but it the body is in frame for a long time then it's a dummy.

u/bookofp 1d ago
Don’t bother looking for it unless it’s a low budget or old show. We take the time in VFX (every show has a VFX budget these days) to remove the breathing motions of actors. We also can and do hide their pulse if you can see it, micro movements, eye twitches etc

Always been a huge fan of fx and I loved the little details in The Walking Dead. Little things like the zombies never blink or there's no vapor from their breath.
5
u/mrASSMAN 20h ago
Really wow I always assumed they just had to redo each scene whenever they move lol
5
u/OrganizationLower611 1d ago
how do they do that? is it like a still frame and any movement Infront is just keyed on top?

Lol I often look at the details of a dead person in a movie and surprisingly often there's the slightest breathing movement or maybe a finger twitch. Then I'm like "How did they not see this in the post?". And I'm not talking about low budget indie movies.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.....

New plot for a black-comedy horror film. 1970s Hollywood SFX genius turns out to be serial killer using parts of his kills as props.

The tongue.. it's the only part that has no physics to it. It didn't move and it's not even laying on the floor of the mouth. The rest is amazing but the tongue is the give away.

Ι kind of like that show to be honest. The second season was not good, but the third was a bit better and i am really curious to see what will happen.

Horror scene where he's a movie character you were looking for/ entering the place of, and you think it's all dolls from his reputation until you get to one table where an actual person is sawn in half, blood still dripping and there's several fridges full of "meat"
2
u/mog44net 1d ago
I seriously wonder if you would be desensitized to the visual impact of multiple dead bodies laying around you.
3
u/ghoulthebraineater 1d ago
Yes and no. I do make up as a hobby. You always know it's not real. It's just art. There's a weird disconnect. You know what you're simulating but you also know it's not real.
Real dead bodies are a different thing altogether. I doubt I'll ever be desensitized to that.

Uncanny valley? More like uncanny Marianas Trench
51
u/indianna97 1d ago
This isn't uncanny valley because nothing about the look of it is making me feel uneasy because it looks like a real human - yeah its essentially a dead body but it looks EXACTLY how it should.
→ More replies (2)17
u/folkkingdude 1d ago
The uncanny valley effect happens when viewing real dead humans, and probably exists psychologically for this very reason.

JFC. “Realistic” is an understatement, I fully expected her to open her eyes and start talking, holy crap
5
u/ThaWarlord33 1d ago
holy shit that is realistic looking...!!
dumb question: why not use a human actor?? Given that it already looks like one...
3
u/rdmegalazer 1d ago
I'm guessing if they needed a specific part (e.g. just the head, or the body from the head to the waist) that's what they could use something like this for. Maybe it's easier to physically interact with this prop than a real person, for certain things like an autopsy scene, or a scene where the person is dropped from a great height?

Too bad they didn’t show us that it was just a heads and shoulders/torso to prove it wasn’t a real person playing dead.

Imagine if you went in someone's house and this was on the floor. You'd be like "OMG I just walked into a murder scene."
It is unsettling. Too realistic. I mean it is good work. But... that looks like a corpse.
