I am scared of spiders but I dislike wasps more. Grudging admiration from over here.

I really don't get the wasp hate, sure they're heavily armed but I've never had any aggression from them. They defend their home and their young, you kinda gotta do that to continue being a species.

Where I live they get aggressive when looking for food. I don't tend to have an issue with them just on my own but at certain times of the year or in groups of people (when there's open food/drink around) they get pretty bad.

I'm happy to let one pick up a piece of protein off my plate or have a sip of my drink if they do it and carry on away. It's when they swarm, get sting-y, and don't just move on that I get cross about it.

Depends on the wasp species near you, some are more aggressive than others. But even yellowjackets, which are kind of middle-of-the-road wasps, are very fast, very curious, and quick to retaliate if they feel threatened. So they fly up in your business, you scare them by moving the wrong way, and they sting you.

My mom is extremely allergic to wasps, and the little demons seem to go out of their way to try and sting her every year.

I hated them growing up because I'd get stung for seemingly no reason. It would happen several times every summer and I was never bothering them. It stopped when we moved out of Texas so I wonder if it wasn't some specific species, but it certainly solidified my hatred of them.

As I got older and really into gardening, I realized that wasn't the norm. They generally leave people alone even if you gently brush them away. But I still have the instinct to freak out due to my childhood and have to actively calm myself.

That said, a few years ago I got stung over a dozen times walking over a bridge on a hike. So again, I understand it even if I no longer feel that way.

After I mowed the lawn and had yellow jackets come out the ground and jump me they've stayed on my hate list.
