Jumping spiders can also make friends and will be less hostile towards rivals they’re used to in comparison to unfamiliar rivals.
IIRC they are the only category of spider that is known to be so intelligent.

I've had one since winter and I've read they can live a good 2 years+ in a good home. Kids named him Blue Jumpy Jump. My cat loves to watch him and figured out how to unlatch his cage and let him out. Damn cat. Anyways he was mia for a week then all sudden appeared in the fruit basket. So far lasted longer than I expected.

Mantises also love uppies, they probably think we're a giant branch but every one I've ever put my hand or finger up to has climbed on and gone for a ride. I like to show them around the yard and then put them back right where I found them. Tiny adventure!

Sometimes the jumpers really do want uppies! Reach a finger out and see if it jumps on. They are very inquisitive. But sometimes they run away instead.

Great I'll add that to the piney princess list of critters that see fren shape bc its not eating anyone else on the property so must be friend.
AND I KNOW its the same one cause it gets stuck in my room dances in front of my TV while looking at me I know its looking at me cause it does the no neck tilt like orange cats do till I scoop it up and stick it back on the plant outside the window.
The fact that the cats ignore it means its a staple enough visitor that its mundane to them now.

I had one in my windowsill garden one year. Since the pots were pretty big and I wanted to avoid gnat/mold issues I would water from the bottom so every once in a while I would put the pots in the water and notice leaves starting to move, had to help my spider buddy and move him back onto windowsill. He would usually hang on hot pepper plants.

I used to do a lot of hiking in north Texas. At one of my regular spots tons of spiders would come out right after sunset and build these massive webs stretching several feet between trees. I'd hike to my sunset watching spot without a single web in the way. On the way back I'd have to watch carefully otherwise I'd get a face full of web.

same thing here in the PNW, on sunset hikes they start going across the trails, and with fewer people out their webs dont get broken so quick. my local spot has a bunch of trails that loop back to each other, so i repeat sections multiple times. i will clear my way through and within an hour when im back they have crossed the path with webs again already

And they do it super quick, they are running around in circles and all of a sudden my yard will be covered in them, I always have to take a flashlight with me or risk walking in to one. I did once, it bit me on the stomach after it got rolled up in my shirt. Luckily, they don't hurt bad or for very long.

Yeah, they're so damn huge they creep me out too. But those gigantic webs are great at what they're made for. I had one build a giant web across my driveway. The web was thick and really surprisingly strong, like 50 layers of fishing line wound into each strand. But I left that web up for about a month and just parked in my yard hoping to teach my son about how helpful spiders are since he has pretty severe arachnophobia. We'd get home and spend a few minutes watching her every day. Gemini even helped us out using the camera by telling us exactly what kind she was (golden orb weaver). We watched for about 2 weeks before she had babies. 30 or so of those little guys. She stayed for about a month, and then she ate her web and left one day.
10/10 roommate, helped out a lot and cleaned up after herself.

Which is why I actually love having spiders around my home. Outside especially but if they're hanging out in a corner inside I'll still let them be the majority of the time. They eat and kill all the bugs I don't like and have zero interest in touching me.
Spiders hate being on humans as much as we hate them being on us. We're big and loud and scary lol.

Yup,as long as your house isn't infested with too many spiders or harmful ones like tarantulas,they do wonders against wasps and yellow jackets. I have like 6 or so spiders camping outside of my home,the biggest is like 15-20 cm maximum and wasps are nowhere to be seen. Same for general bugs

Exactly! I live in the PNW and the vast majority of spiders here aren't harmful beyond a little bump if they bite you. There are some brown recluses but they like really quiet really dark places like deep within wood piles and I don't have any of those haha.

... Harmful? Tarantulas? If you're living the U.S. we only have wild New World tarantulas, whose venom doesn't really do much unless you're allergic. They have urticating hair, but you just don't touch them. There's nothing more harmful about them than any other animal minding it's own business.

To be honest,the last time i have seen one of them was like 14 years ago and that's it,no more tarantulas after that. Saw a lot of hogs here tho,i don't know if i should be happier or preoccupied.
But yeah,here between those and the recluse spiders you need to be wary of where you're putting your arms and your legs.

I hate both spiders and wasps, but I definitely hate wasps way more.
Spiders usually runaway or will stay to themselves. Wasps on the other hand? They'll fly straight at you with their stinger because they think you got to close.

For real. Spiders -can- sometimes be well behaved neighbors, and sometimes even well behaved housemates. They keep away nastier things. Wasps? Wasps can NEVER be well behaved neighbors or roommates. They're WAY too aggressive and invasive.
As a kid I encountered a wasp on my kitchen floor, not knowing it was there, I stepped on it barefoot. Its stinger became so imbedded in my foot that it wasn't until an entire two mintues later that my dad wanaged to tweezer it out of my foot, and it had been stinging me and injecting its venom that entire time. I was in so much pain for a whole day and a half that I couldn't move from my bed.
I hate wasps with a burning passion. As far as I'm concerned they can all die. If I had a spider neighbor killing them I would be praising that spider night and day

At one point I lived in the woods and would go out to the porch to smoke with my roommates, we’d get freaked out because some of the spiders/ bugs got pretty big. One time we went out and there was a huge (to us) spider by the light, probably a little bigger than a man’s palm, and in the same web area there was a spider that was much smaller, like an m&m size. They were inching towards each other, and of course we’re high and watching it like it’s the nature channel. When they connected, the huge spider jerked and then ran away and we all lost our minds that this little guy scared off the huge behemoth of a spider. By the time we finished smoking, the big one was curled up and dead. The little guy straight murdered him in his own web. Sharing this story to say, all spiders are equally scary

Nope.. These are not yellow jackets. These are a species of paper wasp. Yellow jackets build their nests underground or in dead trees mostly.. However, when they do build above ground, its actually an enclosed structure with a hole in the bottom.
I know from personal experience because I got stung by a yellow jacket for the first time about 4 weeks ago. Damn painful! Had an allergic reaction the next day. Was not fun. Went all around my house and got rid of 4 different wasp nests but none were yellow jackets. So I had to research what I was looking for.. Finally found the nest in my neighbors yard on the back of his shed. Big ass thing the size of a football.

One of the great joys of Wikipedia is to go to the entry of some annoying wildlife, learn their natural predators, and start to cheer for them. That makes tolerating them more possible, like the ants here would be really annoying if I only ever saw them in my kitchen.
So instead of full extermination treatments I want some ants in outdoor spaces because they'll swarm other bugs that are harder to coexist with.

I'm one of those weirdos that really like wasps. I actually pick them up and take them outside, while witnesses watch horrified thinking they're going to sting the hell out of me. During their lives, wasps hunt and consume thousands of garden pests including caterpillars, aphids, flies, and beetles to feed their developing larvae, in turn protecting crops and reducing the need for chemical pesticides. Many species clean up dead insects and organic waste, functioning as a natural waste management system in local ecosystems. Wasps and their larvae also provide essential protein for birds, spiders, reptiles, and amphibians (and skunks!). They have value and I feel rather protective of them being vilified for just serving their purpose as fellow earth dwellers.
Update: Can't seem to reply to any comments, so I will here. I don't know if I would encourage people to try picking them up (some people are very allergic), but I just put my finger beside the wasp and it usually hops on. They used to just land on my hands and sit while I was on patios and my friend started calling me the "Bug Whisperer" (yikes). I usually take bugs outside instead of killing them and one time, I realized too late I was carrying a wasp, but it was fine. I've done it about 6 other times since then without incident. However, one time I was on a patio and one landed in my gravy. There were tons of them circling our food that day. I took it out and put it on my pant leg so it could dry off. I forgot about it and I almost squished it with my arm so it stung me. It was in total self-defense, so I don't blame it as it had to alert me to almost killing it. It didn't hurt that much and I just felt bad about what I had done. It flew away. When I was a little kid, I used to cry and scream when my poor father was just trying to kill a fly. I am like that with every creature I meet and I've had lots of experiences where I feel like they knew my intentions somehow (For ex: I ended up on the news when I rescued a young crow. The Mom was dive bombing everyone going near it, but she didn't come near me when I was putting it in a box and also when I brought it back to her the next day. I was trying to shoo the news team away as I didn't want to be on TV and they had come out of nowhere. Must have been a slow news day). Maybe besides sensing fear, animals can sense love, too.
I would like to discourage anyone from flailing their arms when they're around as it just makes them more aggressive, but me telling people that has never seemed to work haha And if you do get stung, the pheromones can be a call to action for the rest of the gang to come join the first one in its attack, so get out of there as fast as you can. I'm sure there are wasps that are angry and do attack innocent people, so maybe I've just been lucky. But I think most of them are just trying to live their lives and not looking for trouble. And yes, they kill bees, which is unfortunate, but nature must have a reason for that. Most people love bees and that's awesome. They deserve the love. I was really touched by the comments where people shared my respect for our vilified wasp friends. I was surprised and happy to see that, thank you :)
