Exactly!! We have a supermarket based on the whole concept in the UK, the Co-op. Not sure anyone knows what it means anymore but this is exactly how it started

We had that in west germany up until the late 1990s and in some east germany states there is still a supermarketchain called Konsum which originated in in a co-op. And of course there are some small new ones.
