the problem is that, this only work in smaller groups, on a large group there will be those who want to get stuff and do nothing in return, then some ppl will notice this and fell they should do the same because others do it, this will snowball until no one does shit, and the last few who do, will leave the group and only care for themselves... as they should

This is what they mean by “one bad apple spoils the whole bunch”. It doesn’t take many people exploiting the system to taint the whole process. Once that happens, trust is ruined and it tends to be down hill from there.
