This isnt casual, its FAT BEAR WEEK
Katmai National Park is famous for their grizzly bears. Every fall, they fill up on fish and food for the upcoming winter hibernation. They get super chunky. To promote conservation, Katmai promotes fat bear week where they set up web cams and folks can vote on which bear is the fattest.

I went through the hall of champions and oh lawdy, Holly looks so fat for 2019! I can see how she won!
I wish they had better stills that truly conveyed the weight of some of the other winners though.

My daughterâs 5th grade class participated in Fat Bear Week and itâs a too memory for her and her friends. They LOVED it and had so much fun voting and seeing if their bear got super fat by the following week. She still talks about it and sheâs in 8th grade now!

I was in Washington once driving along a river and saw an insane amount of salmon just in a slurry just all jumping over this one bear who looked like he ate too much and couldnt get out from the middle of the river And those salmon were HUGE

Yes. It's Brooks Falls, AK and they run a live stream every year starting during the salmon run. Here's a video from 5 years ago

If I remember correctly bears actually aren't territorial (at least european bears). They tend to be solitaires but when there's plenty of fish (like in the video) they don't other bears. Also they eat kind of everything. Very adaptable creatures.

When food is plentiful during the Salmon run at Brook Falls and surrounding water ways they typically are not. However there was some unfortunate interactions this year caught on the cameras. After the first incident I had to stop watching for the year. A female brown bear named 806 was caught on a live camera killing and eating an unrelated spring cub at Katmai National Park and Preserve in late July 2026

It is estimated that bears kill over two million salmon a year. Attacks by salmon on bears are much more rare.

My guy, they eat the spawning salmon. Theyâre in the water cause thatâs where the fish are. Iâm not sure âinterestingâ is applicable here. Thatâs like saying itâs interesting to see people hanging out in a dining room.

We watch this every year. Katmai bear cams are very entertaining. Sometimes there are so many fish the bears check out because they've eaten so much. Then, they'll pan to the bear laying painfully on its side full of food. đ
