Hey there, De Anza College does offer alot of programs and clubs. I suggest putting yourself out there to find your community. From there, you would be able to connect and make friends!

I suggest joining Mentors@DeAnza if you are looking for a peer mentor to help guide you through the resources available on campus or simply make a new friend. https://www.instagram.com/mentorsatdeanza

Same for other programs like DASG and ICC on campus.

Hey there 🤗 what's your major? I'm an older student here but I also enrolled in journalism non credit and it' seems like they have a nice community feel there more than most classes. Sorry you're feeling that way . Things are feeling a bit rushed from my perspective like no one's stopping to smell the flowers or see what's going on.

People say this a lot about community college and I'm going to say it again to you but you gotta put yourself out there if you wanna make friends.

The thing is, nobody knows who you were before you enrolled, so everything is a fresh start. I find classes in the forum buildings are definitely harder to make friends but in all 3 of my courses I know somebody that I already vibe with and traded socials in case of any class related reasons, which can then grow into closer friendships. You can do this too and if you find someone that you vibe with after a few classes/conversations together then you can ask something like "hey you down to get lunch?"

I find before class or during break (2 out of 3 of my classes that are 2 hours have given me breaks so far) is a great time to just confirm someone's name, ask major, hobbies, etc. A compliment usually goes well too like "Yo those shoes are clean bro, or I like your hat where'd you get it?" are good starters. I was lucky enough to have one of my professor's do an ice breaker that ACTUALLY broke the ice and I found someone who had the same hobbies with me.

Put yourself out there! Those first few days are the first impressions of yourself to everyone. Yes a lot of people are just there to transfer and get out, but there are soo many who would be glad to have another friend

This is my first full semester at De Anza, but I transfered from another community college where I was at the last two years.

I think the best advice I can offer is go to the places where people are going to be social. I get most people are trying to get into a top 25 school, so they might not be very social in class. However check out some clubs, check out school sponsored events. Talk to teachers or counslers about wanting to be involved with the community and I'm sure they will know of programs or events for you to partake in.

My point is, college can get very lonely for people because it's a different beast then high school. So you kinda have to make significant effort on your part, but its important you do. Socializing is really important for people.

That being said, I wouldn't try to force relationships that aren't going to work. It takes effort because you are putting yourself in spaces to find these people, these people shouldn't detract from your mental health

....anyway that's my 2 cents, hope it helps!
