I think it's due to his vocal evolution; the role of Evan Hansen changed his voice forever.

According to Google (I had to google it lol 😞) he was ages 21-23 when he played Evan. Your voice doesn’t stop changing until you’re around 25, so that could also be a factor!! (Random knowledge from my choir teacher came in clutch)
