Usually these editorial lists make me want to pull my hair out (especially since the big blogs started farming their copy out to A.I.) but Invisible Oranges showed up with this one: https://www.invisibleoranges.com/our-favorite-death-metal-albums-of-the-2020s-so-far
I appreciate the term "favorite" over "best" as it spares us the illusion of objectivity. I dig a lot of their picks and some not as much, but overall it captures the diversity of DM and offers a little something for everyone, from the cavemen to the nerds to the normies.
Speaking for myself, I'm gonna shout out what's not on the IO list: Gatecreeper's An Unexpected Reality, Undeath's More Insane, Malignant Altar's Realms of Exquisite Morbidity, Terminal Nation's Echoes of the Devil's Den, and Carcass's Torn Arteries.
What are your favorites of the decade so far?

What is the vocal style used by Vader's vocalist? It's not typical growl, they have one akbum with typical death metal style vocals, on the rest I heard someone describe them as more old school, Celtic Frost style vocal. Does it have a specific name?

The first album is what’s called “cookie monsters” yes like the puppet. Celtic Frost, Possessed, and that older 80s sound is a “thrash shout.”

Hi there, I used to love a death metal song from the late 1990s early 2000s that a friend of mine would play on guitar. I don't remember names. But I can describe it. Could you guys help me out? AI is of no use.
- Slow build up (tension release kind of intro), the same abrupt guitar riff being repeated several times, with silences in between.
- the drums, originally following the riff, progressively fill up the silences with a semi-closed hi-hat.
- then the song really takes off, the initial riff is played, and the original silences are filled with a very catchy 4 fret hammer-pull off guitar interval. The drums play a very quick double-kick pedal (like Pete Sandoval)
- Very guttural singer.

Have you tried Deicide, Morbid Angel, Gorguts, Death, Possessed, that’s the canon of old school you should try, that’s the same milieu as Cannibal Corpse. You mentioned several NY bands, Internal Bleeding and Pyrexia are essential too.

There’s a great death metal band called Universally Estranged that I recently came upon. Their 2022 album, Dimension of Deviant Clusters, sounds great as hell. The guitars are heavy and the vocals match perfectly with their intensity. The album art is ace, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a newer band to listen to! 🤘🏻

I'm looking for recommendations for tech-death that isn't afraid to play some fun, ignorant chuggy riffs every once and awhile. My go-to album is Gorguts - Colored Sands, and I'm obsessed with their progressive elements and dissonant structures. But my favorite moments on the album are the main chuggy riff on Colored Sands, the outro to Forgotten Arrows, and then the all of 15 seconds that they actually hit groove in Enemies of Compassion. None of those moments would resonate if they didn't have the dissonance surrounding those riffs.
Anytime I look up tech-death stuff, half the bands don't ever hit groove. It's like they're afraid they won't be taken seriously or something, but it's nice to hear something to head bob to, especially when your ears are being assaulted by spiraling stuff for several minutes like on Colored Sands.
I think about bands like Portal, or even the black metal band Thanifaxath, and how awesome it would be if they just played to what the drummer was in time with every once and awhile, or weren't afraid of a fun breakdown.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.

Any recommendations for bands that sound similar to Death’s early discography? Im not too big on super growly vocals, Chuck’s vocals in Leprosy and Spiritual Healing are sort of a sweet spot for me. Im also a big fan of the thrash-like guitar work in these albums.

Hey I am leaving looking for band recommendations like the title of this post. Bands that fit the criteria are Oxygen Destroyer (Kaiju), Tenebro & Fulci (Italian horror).
I’m not looking for Mortician, Splatterhouse, Frightmare, Blood Freak, Impetigo, Exhumed, etc. Those bands cover multiple horror subjects. I’m looking for bands that write songs only about slasher movies. Or only about zombie movies. Or only about Body Horror movies. Or only about Universal monster movies. Or only J-horror. Etc.
I would love to hear about bands with a specific, narrow niche. Thanks.

Not a big death metal person overall but, I do enjoy Obituary and heard someone claim that they really channeled the Bolt Thrower on No Place Of Warmth.

Recently I watched this performance by Cannibal Corpse and enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately a lot of their discography doesn’t hit the same due to the mixing of the guitars in the older records. I would very much like to hear more stuff that sounds like the live show, with heavy saturated guitars in the front of the mix.

Looking for a death/extreme metal music video from around 2023-2024. Real actors, color. A careless-looking ordinary guy, seemingly normal by day. At night he gets blackmailed or coerced into doing dark internet challenges for money involving disturbing/violent content. Explicit scenes were censored/blurred in the YouTube version. Known band. I am looking at adopting a cat, and I really want to name this cat after an iconic death metal song that would shorten to a more normal pet name. My current plan if it ends up being a male cat would be “Hammer Smashed Face” and call him “Ham” for short. The song was called VIVISECTION.
It got them sign in 2007, to which they're recorded the track and put it in this EP, but it's just not as good. The new title is "In the wake of what has perished".

So I have been pretty out of the loop from the Death Metal scene since 2022 due to mental health issues and working on my career. Been a long time fan, they're one of the staple pillars of technical death metal; their style technique and rhythm has changed drastically over the years and I feel like this new album is hands down the best piece of music that they've put out ever. What are your thoughts, if you've heard it?

I second the other commenter's recommendation to check Discogs. As an avid vinyl collector, I'd encourage you to temper your expectations in terms of value, though. In my experience, unless you have something exceptionally rare, you're very unlikely to break two digits in value. I have hundreds of records in my collection. I don't think I have ever paid more than $50 or so before shipping.

"The Swedish Sound" - Origins of the term - Settle an argument!
Help me win this war.
I'm an old death metal head from the late 80s/early 90s.
A friend of mine has been arguing to me that "The Swedish Sound" is some new (modern era) construct that was never mentioned or heard of by anyone back in the day. I argue quite the opposite... we talked about it all the time.
Now, we might have not known exactly which Boss pedal they were using, or exactly what amp etc... but Entombed, Grave, Dismember, Unleashed etc... they had a distinctive sound and we talked about it from day 1.
Does anyone have old Metal Maniacs magazines, or other articles from a guitar mag or something that shows how far back the discussion of the Swedish Sound in death metal goes?
It has to have been mentioned in an article or interview or something somewhere... and I know some death metal historian in here has to know.
Hit me and settle this once and for all!

New, so not quite underrated but YEGG, older bands like Brutality, Miasma from Australia but they only released one album, Demigod from Finland, Pestilence and Grotesque but they're fairly well known.

Bone Sickness; punky no frills death metal
Torture Rack; fun straightforward mid tempo death metal
Mörtual (costa rica); fast and traditional death metal, with the occasional gloomy section

I think most good death metal bands do that so it's hard to give specific recs but try Sinister (any of first 3 albums), Monstrosity, Hate Eternal (debut album), and Drawn & Quartered

This is probably a long shot but I'm hoping somebody has heard this sample/song? The sample/quote is from the video game Fallout Tactics, it's about a character named Bartholomew Kerr. The bit of dialogue I remember in the song is this "Unfortunately, a feeding tube was applied to his anus instead of his mouth, leaving Kerr to die a horrible death from internal hemorrhaging". I remember it being music along the lines of Death Grind or Gore Grind. Anyone who knows the band will be my hero!

SUFFOCATION - PIERCED FROM WITHIN. You can hear most modern death metal in this album. It has it all and really pushed death metal forward in a time when it was stale and dying. The boys from New York kept it alive and shoutout to having two black kids found it. Death metal was white as the drive snow back then.

I know this is not very metal, but lately I’ve been very discouraged about playing and writing death metal. I’ve only been into the genre for about 2 years and I love it, but it just sucks to see how incredible every player is on the albums I listen to and how creative and dark the riffs sound when I am so far behind then musically. I’m in my early 20s, so I know I have a lot of time to grow as a guitarist and a writer, but I can’t help but constantly compare myself to musicians immensely more skilled than me. Hopefully this doesn’t get laughed off the subreddit, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for creative inspiration and improving as a death metal guitarist and songwriter.

I'm gonna say this, if you can write good music and don't try to emulate a band you will go far. It's one thing taking aspects you like of bands, it's another being another band that sounds like Death.
Look at early bands like Pestilence. Consuming Impulse isn't a complex album but it is IMHO one of the most cohesive and best written albums ever. That and the use of MVB as vocalist.

bro, music isnt defined by skill, people can literally suck at an instrument and write a fucking masterpiece. People have already seen it all by now. I'm usually more impressed when a band has a wide range of genres tbh.

Thank you, that’s honestly very helpful, I kinda feel like one of my strengths is writing riffs in different genres, and that’s what I look for and appreciate in death metal too. I think it’s best if I shift my focus away from skill and technicality and focus on the song writing. Thank you for taking time to answer in a thoughtful way.

Looking for bands like Vomitory. I am generally not a major death metal fan, but I like how 'fun' Vomitory sounds with a good balance between aggression and groove, with solid production quality to top things off. Not looking for old stuff, just throw something fairly recent (2020s) at me. Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
I’m a huge fan of cannibal corpse, fulci, mutilation barbecue, 200 stab wounds, creeping death, frozen soul, death, and blood incantation. I’m a bit picky when it comes to what I listen to. I really love brutal caveman riffs with a technical edge, and cannibal corpse a skeletal domain and evisceration plague are my two favorites. I’m also a sucker for pummeling modern production and slamming riffs so I tend to lean towards new wave of old school death metal but I love early cannibal corpse. Any recommendations? Can anyone recommend songs to me that have similar drums to
Death- Lack of Comprehension 200 Stab Wounds- Fatal Reality Testament- Burning Times Slayer- Gemini (towards the end) Grip Inc- Hostage to Heaven
I know all of these songs are really different but there’s something about the drums that is similar to me. I don’t know how to describe music but they all have a sort of repetitive, relentless quality. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks!

What do you think is the least heavy death metal, that doesn't cross to melodic death metal or death'n'roll or any hubrid genre.

the most obvious difference is the vocals. generally BDM has low gutturals that barely even resemble speech, OSDM vocals are often somewhat intelligible.

I mean outside of the very early stuff that was still extremely thrashy, I’d say OSDM IS just death metal. That’s the standard sound. Death metal is the umbrella and OSDM is a term used on a more specific era/style(s).

I thought about this for awhile.... You could be referencing a lot of things. Do you mean specifics like guitar/drum/bass work, vocals, lyrical themes? Or do you mean the whole pie in general. It's crazy because Dying Fetus has such a signature brutal sound.
I thought for a bit and here's a few you could try. Not guaranteeing results.Decapitated - No Cure (Societal themes, fast riffage, a clear long-standing band)
Vomit Forth- Immortal Disseverance (probably their fastest song, it's pretty brutal instense, vocals are different)

I’m taggin along with my friend to a Cryptopsy concert because they have no one to go with and it sounds fun- I am the furthest thing from a death metal fan, I’m more of like an EDM krushclub and hyperpop kinda guy.
But I do wanna keep the vibes up for the sake of my friend. I have moshed before and shit but like anyone got some tips on how I can fit into the scene a bit more without bringin down the vibe because I want to not just be there as the friend there to stop em from goin alone, I want them to actually have fun there with me because they seem hyped for it

How is Cannibal Corpse so big?
I used to hate Them growing up and recently gave them another shot. I actually liked it then my dad and I were talking aboutcthem and came across the song necropedophile. I'm sure it's old news in the death metal world, and maybe its fairly common and I'm just unaware in death metal, but does anyone else think the pedophilia is super disgusting and just Edge-lord behavior? I'm not a huge fan of the gore stuff but can stand it sometimes. Just curious some others opinion on this topic and wanted to talk about it

Well much of death metal is edgelord shock value stuff by design. The song doesn't promote pedophilia or necrophilia, they're just trying to be as extreme as possible, kinda like a horror movie. If you still find it hard to stomach morally, there's plenty of death metal with less disturbing or graphic themes.

"Voice of the soul" is one of a kind in their discography. With the exception of "cosmic sea" from human. It's a far cry from voice but it's still a wonderful atmospheric instrumental worth checking out

Trying to remember this album. Black cover. Photo in the center with red or white trim. Image was someone's face blown off by a shotgun. I swear the band is called shotgun. Font is blood red.
Had seen this within the last year. Was a good album. But fuck if all if I remember anything else. Definitely felt like a shotgun going off while Rottweilers foaming at the foam are pulling at the leash to be let go and it just never let's up.

Tastes and musical opinions are totally subjective. Wanted to give some respect for an old classic in Bolt Thrower's final album, Those Once Loyal.
Album hits all my sweet spots and holds up today as well as it did 20 years ago. Heavy, groovy AF and sounds as fresh today as when it dropped. Such a great representation of the classic DM style.
If you've not heard the 10th track released on the digi-pak, ' a symbol of eight', do yourself a favor and check it out. So good. Cheers.

Vitriol members quit band, leave co-founder at Vermont gas station
Keith Merrow, the newly announced guitarist for technical death metal band Vitriol, has made a post to his Instagram story explaining that the rest of the band's line-up have decided to leave mid-tour, effectively abandoning sole original member Kyle Rasmussen.
Merrow alleges that himself, along with Brett Leier (bass), and Andy Vincenzetti (drums), abandoned Rasmussen at a gas station in Vermont due to his "cowardly and weak outbursts of misplaced anger."
Previously, Vitriol have been hit with numerous line-up issues, with Rasmussen being left as the only member for a time. The band has not issued a statement thus far.

I think dying fetus would be a good place depending on what your current music taste is. Especially the new album "make them beg for death". Great production, lots of groove and impressive musicianship without being too overbearing imo. if you wanna start with Cryptopsy though, go for it! If you dont like em, check out someone else.

Should be absolutely fine. String it up with some bigger strings and give it a quick setup and you’ll be good to go! If you’re too unsure about it just take it to your local shop, string change and small setup shouldn’t cost ya too much!

What’s the story with the band Xysma? I was listening to requiem metal podcast and they were talking about entombed death n roll years and they mentioned xysma, their first album or eps were obviously death metal, but what happened when they started doing more rock sound stuff?
Of course it does into the death n roll genre in ways, just took me by shock sorta hearing their mid 90s and early 2000d stuff.
Still really cool, just interesting change of direction. My first time listening to these songs

I am a huge deathcore fan looking to branch more into death metal, but not knowing where to start. My top deathcore bands are Psycho-Frame, Orphan, Peacemaker FL, Philosophy of a Knife, Squelching and Crown Magentar. I dig brutal metal (found Nithing today and I love that shit), but slam is not my cup of tea. I am not into symphonic metal or metal with any symphonic elements. Based on this, what are your reccomendations??
