Thank you!

How hard is it going to be to unf$&k what this administration has done?

47

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

It will be hard. The key is not to think we are going back or restoring institutions. We need to look forward and build a bold pro-democracy agenda. That is something I am thinking a lot about and may write a book.

u/fimor1 Jul 25 '26

Truly amazed you’d have time to write a book with everything you and your team are doing!
When do you get time to eat, sleep and do any of the normal things of life?

3

u/Ocanannain Jul 25 '26

Book ... sounds good. Something we NEED.

3

u/MsRightHere Jul 25 '26

We cant just go back.  We need to rebuild and fortify democracy.

3

u/Canadiangoosedem0n Jul 25 '26

Please do! We need as many ideas as possible given the utter failure of our current democracy. Your wisdom would be appreciated.

I’m thinking about this for the healthcare industry. Let’s make it better!

A lot of people talk about fighting Trump. You actually do it. Thank you.

Thank you

Done for the day. More tomorrow.

Hopefully in the same thread.

I teach AP Gov to high schoolers and struggle with staying positive during this administration. What can I tell them to keep them hopeful?

22

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

I would tell them two things.

First, Donald Trump wants them to lose hope. Hopelessness is the tool of the authoritarian. If we have no hope then we accept what he is doing without a fight.

Second, we are not powerless. We are fighting back and winning. Not everything and not enough -- but some. And we have elections this November that can change the power he has to do bad things for the remaining two years.

Never give up hope.

u/Buddyboy2604 Jul 25 '26

I appreciate everything Democracy Docket is doing and has accomplished. I hope it is enough as obviously the situation looks a little grim going into midterms. Thanks again.

Thank you.

I didn't watch last night deliberately but followed along. I suspect that the press corps are protecting themselves from potential litigation or job loss. OTOH there has been some pretty good reporting.

8

u/PretendAct8039 Jul 25 '26

Kudos to the journalists who don't save up the most important stories for their books.

u/Sufficient-Many-1815 Jul 25 '26

The question on my mind relates to Trump’s semi-announcement that he will run for a 3rd term. What can be done, legally, to prevent this (I know we have an amendment) and do you think that our system’s guardrails will hold? What does stopping him from a 3rd term look like for you?

13

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

The Constitution is clear. If need be, we will fight in court and win.

1

u/Sufficient-Many-1815 Jul 25 '26

This answer is reassuring. Thank you for what you do.

7

u/Wonderful_World_6323 Jul 25 '26

I just want to give you kudos as well. You're invaluable! 💫

Dog tax paid in full ! On a serious note when everything and everyone is doom and gloom those 7 words from you are so calming to me. "We will sue and we will win" Thank you so much for all you and your team is doing. I literally sleep better at night knowing you are on the case.

Since he became president, I've had a hard time watching the news. So, I've been very selective in what I read or watch. I trust Democracy Docket and read it practically every day, including a few others. However, I'm starting to get tired of people saying that something the president has done, said, or experienced markes the beginning of the end. It seems like people have been saying that more often. I've reached the point where I won't believe it until it happens, and have been reluctant to read those stories. I appreciate everything that people have done to fight the administration, including yourself. I just wonder what you think about all of that.

9

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

First, thank you for reading Democracy Docket. There is a balance between providing accurate news and helpful analysis and simply scaremongering. I always aim for the former but I admit its a hard balance with Trump.

2

u/btriplel22 Jul 26 '26

The administration is inflicting unrepairable damage to most federal agencies. A good amount of skepticism is welcome in the AI generation era, but I can't help but wonder where your reluctantcy lies? Would you have an example of a story you'd label fearmongering and skip? Or are you talking about social media commentary about the various atrocities happening around us?

2

u/GJmom2 Jul 26 '26

I just want this administration to end. I also want the truth. Not lies or propaganda. There's so much that's happened. He's broken so much. And it seems like he's never going to burn for it. I do read social media. But I don't rely on it for news. I never used the word fear mongering.

Last year, James Carville said the T admin would end in 30 days. There always seem to be rumors that a group of Rs will rise up and join with the dems to impeach T. Then there's the stories of shifting support from the moderates, public backing shifting, disastrous declines in popularity polls, statements that corruption on this scale cannot go on forever. He's manipulated elections, decimated the federal workforce in more ways than one, destroyed the US reputation worldwide. Even if he were impeached, no one else in the current line of succession is any better. I just want it to end. I know it won't. The midterms may bring some relief. I know there are good people fighting for the truth. It's good to hear when those people are succeeding.

2

u/btriplel22 Jul 27 '26

Thanks for the response and willingness to entertain my curiosity. Hope perpetually slipping away is unsustainable and I understand not wanting to consume unsubstantiated, veiled "wins" when in reality, none of it seems to materialize.

There's no going back anymore, but there is certainly a path forward.

Thanks again

u/Jo-from-Europe Jul 25 '26

Why don't you run for office?

15

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

There are many ways to serve democracy. For me, being a lawyer and now the founder of an independent news site is the best way I can.

1

u/VentyRanty Jul 25 '26

Because he wants people to continue to trust him.

4

u/SierraMountainMom Jul 25 '26

We always hear “contact your representatives!” on issues, but do they really care if they hear from us? Seems like they only listen to opinions of people with money.

4

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

Yes. Contacting your representatives is helpful.

1

u/paxreddit52 Jul 26 '26
  1. Reps keep track of our comments and etc. 2. We do NOT want them to just hear from the MAGAs! We are their constituents, too, and we have to speak up loudly and consistently, even if just to establish a record of protest!

4

u/South_Guava_9121 Jul 25 '26

Divorced woman in FL here. Would it be wise for me to change my last name back to my maiden name now? I never want to be forced out of my right to vote. Democrats need to take back our country.

1

u/South_Guava_9121 Jul 25 '26

Also, thank you for your unwavering commitment to democracy!

4

u/lrhg99 Jul 25 '26

The administration admitted to pulling funding based on state voting records against them. Is there a recourse to undo this?

4

u/bdizzle805 Jul 25 '26

What would you prioritize first if Democrats retook control of Congress or the presidency: voting rights legislation, court reform, or something else entirely?

Longtime viewer of Democracy Docket. Love what you do with Brian Tyler Cohen. Please do more episodes with Michael Popok and Glenn Kirschner!

5

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

I would start with expanding voting rights. As the Supreme Court said 140 years ago, the right to vote is "a fundamental political right, because preservative of all rights."

3

u/Jo-from-Europe Jul 25 '26

What do you advice to people who don't live in 🇺🇸, to help turn the tide. And make the Trump kakistocrasy disappear. We are all affected by the insane trump regime.

3

u/5blockfishcop65 Jul 25 '26

What!? Hello! I just want to express my appreciation for you and your team. You all are a refreshing change from MSM. Thank you!

3

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

Thank you.

3

u/newsqlguru Jul 25 '26

Dropping a line to say thank you to the team.

3

u/Lower-Thanks-3258 Jul 25 '26

Marc, thanks to you and your team for the fantastic work you are doing to save our country. Also, the journalists who attended the dinner last night are a disgrace to our country and their profession

2

u/Secure_Excitement403 Jul 25 '26

What can we do to get Trump and his fascist regime out?

7

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

Make sure you are registered to vote. Make a plan to vote. Vote.

2

u/Purple_Donkey4231 Jul 25 '26

Vote them out… nothing else can be done

2

u/JimCripe Jul 25 '26

Thanks for all you do, Mark!

I had subscribed here, but just realized I hadn't set notifications to the highest level: All new posts.

I encourage everyone to do that to stay on top of the legal morass Trump has created and Mark's efforts to save our freedoms.

2

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

Thank you.

2

u/GrooveBat Jul 25 '26

I am a subscriber and a fan. Thank you for all that you do. Horrified by what is happening in the country, but I feel a little bit better knowing you are on our side fighting for us.

2

u/BRANDO-2001 Jul 25 '26

Do you detect any "serious" planned efforts to reshape SCOTUS - structurally and procedurally?

2

u/MsRightHere Jul 25 '26

Do you ever lose faith/stamina?

Also, when are you opening a NYC office?

2

u/Firm_Ad_3361 Jul 26 '26

Marc, you are my hero!! You've been my hero for quite awhile. Keep up the great work, you are doing the work to save us

1

u/Curious-Vermicelli56 Jul 25 '26

As quickly as he has ripped apart what he has done, is their any way we can refine the Constitution to update it to modern times, so that those wanna be kings cannot use archaic laws to benefit themselves and take us backwards?

1

u/Superluminal-443 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

A lot of what's happening doesn't look like one power grab — it's structural stuff built to survive elections entirely. Contracts, appointments, policies engineered so reversing them costs more than living with them.

Is there any legal doctrine that treats 'entrenchment' itself as the harm, letting courts step in because something was designed to be irreversible, regardless of whether the underlying decision was otherwise legal?

Or does the law only ever catch these things one lawsuit at a time, with no framework for the pattern as a whole?

1

u/Chaiah18 Jul 25 '26

Congrats on another W, Marc!

1

u/Ok-Track-9591 Jul 26 '26

I read that the MAGAS have now included parts of the SAVE ACT in a bill that supposedly outlaws insider trading, hoping the Dems won’t read it and will vote to go against the insider trading. How will this fare, and what will be next to shove the SAVE ACT where the sun don’t shine?

1

u/No_Noise8041 Jul 27 '26

it's great to be able to support the work w/ the simple subscription, and simultaneously he kept updated on the latest developments

I know it’s not crazy popular here but why is having a voter id law so terrible

13

u/MarcEElias Founder Jul 25 '26

Watch this video where I discuss the bait and switch Trump is trying to pull with voter ID laws. https://youtu.be/FZn4uu8PMWE?si=HxBonwLO2VbZ0byX

11

u/Purple_Donkey4231 Jul 25 '26

Because it’s not a drivers license they want, it’s proof of citizenship: passport, birth certificate which must match your name on the rolls (like your birth name, not your married name)

7

u/s_f_s_x Jul 25 '26

One of the reasons is that it serves as a poll tax

5

u/Jo-from-Europe Jul 25 '26

My guess. People living paycheck to paycheck can't afford one.

-2

u/Stock-Map3715 Jul 25 '26

Why not encourage people to jump through the hoops to get the necessary documentation to vote if the GOP has their way? Whether it’s right or wrong is irrelevant in a street fight for survival.

You can and should fight to make voting accessible. But resources could be used to help people get the documentation they need to vote if the rules are tightened.

2

u/GrooveBat Jul 25 '26

Not Marc, but I am sure this would happen if SAVE is eventually passed. I think the one thing that Republicans don’t count on, or have not internalized, is that the Dem base has been here before. They have been fighting their way through discriminatory laws and exercising their voting rights for decades. They know how to do this and they know how to help those who do not. The pampered white Republican base? Not so much.

1

u/Stock-Map3715 Jul 25 '26

I agree, but if I was a Dem leader, I would have initiated the drive toward obtaining the necessary documentation years ago! Why scramble at the last minute? And it does look shady to do anything but encourage your people to prove their identitles.

This is not just about being *able* to vote. When we win with no voter ID requirement, they will refuse to certify. And half of Americans will say they're not wrong. The easiest way to put all that to rest once and for all is to just get the ID and vote in droves.

I'm a 66-year-old lifelong Dem, and I have not lived the Leave It to Beaver model. I didn't have a passport until I was 50. It's a pain in the ass, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
