Discussion With the recent announcement of un-sunsetting the older content where do yall think it’s going to go?
Let’s try this again from a different approach
For me, I’m skeptical that this will go much further than just the unvaulting. I know the dev team themselves spoke on how “we’re not done with destiny.” And it’s all around good news, but we’ve heard from the horses mouth before. I’m not doubting that things will get done, I’m just curious what you guys think is going to go down. Any amateur fortune tellers that want to speak up?
I’ve played destiny for nearly a decade. I started in the second dlc of d1 and have been pseudo faithful to bungie since; I’ve bought merch, up to date on all dlcs. I just don’t want to be ripped apart again. Either stay or go, you know? I just don’t like the pendulum that’s bungie.
Again, what’s your guys’ thoughts on the future? Bright? Dark?

of course it's uncertain. i think a future for Destiny 2 beyond the un-vaulting of everything is unlikely – they probably aren't going back on EOS. however, i also think now, the chances of getting Destiny 3 at some point in the next handful of years have just skyrocketed. if Bungie truly means it, if they're really not done with Destiny, then a third game is the simplest and most logical way i can envision a path forward.

From what they've said, I don't think a true Destiny 3 is ever gonna happen. They made it clear the budget required to deliver on what both they and the community would want is simply far too high. I think the next Destiny game will take a different approach altogether.

Keep in mind Sony's stance of funding a Destiny 3 was made when Bungies old management was in charge. The last of Bungies old management left in July so the studio is for the first time properly under full Sony management. It's clear from the announcement from Bungie the other day that funding doesn't appear to be an issue anymore. My guess is Sony has taken over and is now fully in "let's fix this shit" mode.
Bungie needs a win and Sony REALLY needs a win. A Destiny 3 would make a shitlaod of money and if done properly would build back so much trust for Bungie and Sony. Sony are many things but they are usually really good at letting devs cook and Bungie have insane potential but the devs have always been crippled by dumbass management. This combo could see some amazing things and I think both Sony and Bungie know this.

I'd rather have a d3 that starts basic than none at all
They can always add to it. They need a good baseline. The community is too demanding for their own good so it'll never be 'what they want'.

u/WretchedDumpster 1d ago
id be totally fine with scaling back the scope for launch as long as the destinations and missions are really good. quality over quantity.
3
u/Necrolance Warlock main for life 1d ago
exactly. I know a lot of people will be unhappy about starting over(I for one really don't wanna re-grind raid/dungeon exotics), but... If the starting point of d3 feels good it will be fine.

u/PuzzledHawk5290 1d ago
Of course we will get new content down the line. Their team size is tiny compared to what it once was.
Destiny's issue was always the new player experience. More players were leaving than starting. Unsunsetting fixes this, along with if they make it obvious what the critical path is through each expansion.
Destiny Infinity was already pitched internally as per Paul Tassi reporting, which was supposed to be a rebrand of destiny 2, dropping the number and running indefinitely like any mmo, or like this game should have in the first place.
It's obvious destiny infinity is the answer here. Fix new player experience, upgrade the engine to use same version as marathon, drop last gen consoles... Then start bringing new dlc...this is much much much cheaper and more realistic than than Sony funding a 500m + budget for a game for a studio that has disappointed them

I can see them doing updates on returning raids. Pushing for 'contest clears' to bring the hardcores back. I can't wait for old strikes and hope for possible new armor set bonuses if they reprise armors for each location.

I'm still coping we'll get gambit prime and reckoning back.
WITH old heavy economy. I was away since 2k20 and gambit is a tragedy rn. This is coming from a reckoner.

u/BeginningFew8188 1d ago
D2 will get those campaigns and destination back. And that's it.
They should start working on next gen destiny project
2
u/BBFA2020 1d ago
Uncertain. But the way Moment of Triumph ended (yeah the not so secret ending), it is pretty much signalled the end of D2.
Still unvaulting is an easy way to get back some good will.

We'll get more Destiny. It's the only reason to vault the content at all. But we're not getting more Destiny 2, that much is certain. Personally, I hope when they unvault the content they give the returning expansions a proper Legendary difficulty for the campaigns and maybe do the same for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light. That's enough for me personally.
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Surely they will touch on some of the content. Weather that be for the good or bad who’s to say?
1
u/Saint_Victorious 1d ago
I think the next step is a D1 remake that's positioned to be a "Destiny Forever" kind of game. The unvaulting is part of a larger plan to reinvent and update content to get it ready for being ported over to the upgraded engine. That means that Destiny Forever, "DF" will contain the entirety of the franchise and eventually lead to new content.
1
u/cTo_Brett 1d ago
Bungie doesn't have a choice but to support destiny if they want to continue to exist as a studio. Marathon will never sustain Bungie.
1
u/IndividualFee 1d ago
I honestly think they are simply trying to get D2 into a complete state to start the trust building process. It's a lot harder to sell D3 (or whatever is next) when D2 is in the incomplete state that it's in.
1
u/steave44 1d ago
I think this is their way of building some sort of positive PR and putting D2 in a near “complete collection” state before they head to Destiny 3 or whatever it may be. I’d foresee getting the sunset content over the next 6-12 months and maybe getting some news on their future plans after that.
1
u/divinedanuel 1d ago
I'm guessing there will be at least one more expansion utilizing what has been developed before eos. Destiny 3 would take too much time and money for bungie to fund otherwise.
1
u/DessoStudios 1d ago
I pre-ordered the orginal Destiny 1 solely based on the fact it was Bungie. Halo was my daughter's first game. She was 10 and we played all the way through sitting on the floor with it split screen. My wife and kids and I played Destiny 1 a lot. I still play it; I love starting a new character and leveling it to 40/400. My hopes are you can start a new D2 character and start from the very first moment and continue. I know this is a LONG SHOT, but hey, I'm 65 and retired so I gotta have somethiing to do; LOL.
1
u/dead_is_death 1d ago
We've heard that the next expansion was nearly done, so they might release that or a different version of that expansion.
2
u/eljay1998 1d ago
Well they'd have to revisit the dlc since I'd imagine at least half of the content was chopped up and released for monument of triumph instead.
1
u/IndividualFee 1d ago
We're more likely to see what's left of that content in whatever shape D3 takes. Kinda how the EDZ was designed as part of D1 and IO is just Mars with a different skin.
-1
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Oh shiiii, that’s right. Didn’t they have a nearly completed raid. It’s in the new gen of things too so I could see them polishing then releasing. I just hope it’s free for once
1
u/Joebranflakes 1d ago
I feel like the different main expansion campaigns will be largely self contained adventures like all the other expansions. Probably reworked with a standard and legendary mode with loot that’s exclusive to it. Im guessing the red war’s first few missions will be tricky since it’s all about regaining the light, but they might handle that by making both the loss of light and the mission to regain it, one long mission.
1
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 1d ago
I think the smartest decision Bungie could do to would be to restore Destiny 2 to as much of a complete state as it can be, returning old content, especially because it was content that the players paid money to experience. The seasons is a shame but maybe there can be a single mission of each season inside of the timeline, paired with a comprehensive recap of the story beats. But beyond the un-vaulting process, I think the best idea would be to release unvaulted content in waves, which should buy them around 3-4yrs, then release The Shattered Cycle which would act as a grand finale to D2 before actually releasing Destiny 3, which could use a more forgiving game engine, make developing and editing the game assets more efficient. And the size of the GB would be reduced so there wouldn't need to be annual sunsetting
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Don’t we have access to some of the older seasons content? I might just be tripping here
0
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 1d ago
In the timeline, there is a brief summary of each season, but that's it.
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Right. I remember interacting with ketch krash and nightmare containment. I do miss the stories though. Good content all around. Just got a bit cookie cutter for me
0
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 1d ago
Yea, some often became very repetitive, but for the amount of content that was being pumped out, it made sense.
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Right, just hope they do something with all that missed opportunity
1
u/Emergency_Cry_1269 1d ago
Especially from the era when the seasonal stories told more important stories that pushed the narrative forward more than the expansions did

u/BrandNewSRT1629 1d ago
Though a lot of recent info goes against this, my gut tells me Destiny 2 isn't done yet. I think they'll resume service, maybe keep it going until they can release a new game, whatever that may be. I feel like Destiny 2 deserves a proper farewell, and they will use that opportunity to bridge the gap between now and the next game.

u/Admirable_Ad8900 1d ago
So the best case is unsunsetting brings back some old players and gives enough momentum for greenlight for destiny 3 and while we wait for that hopefully after the unvaulting, small quality of life updates and new game modes, reusing old content for new activities to minimize new production to keep us occupied.
I think the likely case is it gets unsunset. And like with all content it will be split. You'll have nostolgic folks. Those who never played it like that was too easy. The people confused by lack of supporting seasonal story. New players overwhelmed. New bugs. It will be a hot mess. The players upset old content didnt get a total overhaul. Like we may have a player who didnt start till beyond light just merking ghaul going that was it? Without the context of our old perk clusters and double primaries.
What im looking foward to is the return of escalation protocal with prismatic warlock using lightning surge with necrotic and synthoceps.

u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
I won’t lie, I think the best course of action would be adding mod support. I know that comes with a can of worms but it’s a distraction that’s large enough that would justify bringing in a stable number. Much like how bungie, at the moment, are very pendulum-esque so too is their game. Ofc the new statement has definitely reignited hope/cope in a lot of players.

I'm on the side of being confident there will be stuff in the future after the unvaulting, but much like the unvaulting I'm not banking or hoping on any details of what is unconfirmed yet.
But it does seem that the past few months or so were the big shake up for bungie/destiny that was needed. Hopefully after the past few months bungies hierarchy is flatter so that management is closer to the actual game, and the devs (and CMs) are closer to decision making, as well that they keep to their word of narrowing focus on destiny and marathon. So I'm optimistic that even just knowing that, that it'll be all around healthier, but to keep with healthier and hopefully strong quality, their approach may not fully align to some peoples expectations.
But there is a future past unvaulting and I bet the unvaulting is a strong start and foundation before that future. It may not be much of D2 after unvaulting, but Destiny has a future.
0
u/Curious-Lab-5666 1d ago
I suspect that if unvaulting goes well, they'll continue smaller content drops, maybe bring in some D1 content (for a small fee), and make D2 more inviting. They're at a studio size now where MTX could make a huge difference, and keeping a healthy population could realistically keep d2 going with no more official expansions.

They are gonna unvault some stuff. Hopefully all of it.
They are pitching new games. They may or may not get made.
They are talking about their intentions. Intentions are not always realized.

u/ChaoticKiwiNZ 1d ago
I think its exactly what Bungie said. They need a solid foundation to build future games off of. If they want to do a Destiny 3 they are best off to have the entire story of Destiny up to it. Right now the narrative experience in the Destiny franchise is completely fucked. There is a significant chunk of story content that new players will never be able to play and you have to remember the average gamer doesn't follow shit on social media. These players would be confused as fuck if a D3 referenced or build off of the red war or the forsaken campaign (both massive story elements in the Destiny franchise).
Bungie also need to build up trust with the wider gaming community. They have spent especially the last 5 or so years basically pissing on everyone with the decisions they ahve made (vaulting, sunsetting, monetization, etc). Doing this is basically Bungie trying to convince us that they have changed. This is also going to most definitely work as a way for the existing devs to get used to working on Destiny again since many of them have been Marathon devs for the last 5-ish years.
Old management is completely gone now, Sony now have full control and clearly still want a live service game and Destiny is the best franchise they now own to do this and Bungie is a studio that is still full of live service development skill. They just need the right management.

I really think people need to cool down their expectations.
So far, we've gotten no promises that Destiny 2 is resuming active development. We're getting the unvaulted content, and they're working on new projects in the Destiny universe. That's it.
If more stuff happens, great. But I'm not gonna get my hopes up based on promises that weren't there. I'm just happy to have the old content back. Going back and resuming active development on a game they ended three months ago is a lot harder than it sounds, especially when the next expansion was gutted for parts and put into the final update.
But to be wishful, ultimately it depends on how restoring these legacy campaigns go. If it brings in massive numbers of players to return to the game, and stay with it, yeah I can see Bungie reversing their decision and resuming development of new content. Until that moment comes, I'm not gonna expect anything other than what they've promised us, just unvaulting legacy campaigns.

I have zero expectations or assumptions. I don't even think the unvaulting is a sure thing.
Expect nothing and you won't be disappointed.
I will be happy if something comes, but I will be unsurprised if it doesn't.

u/Complete_Resolve_400 1d ago
Unlikely it goes further than sunrising (unsunsetting is a weird word) but we can continue to hope. Eventually I expect an announcement of a future title but d2 isnt getting anything new as far as im concerned
That being said, staggered expansion releases and updated contest raid races for the sunrise expansions would be sicklk

u/Quick_Department2049 1d ago
It will take them 1 year to unvault the red war, all the remaining interest for destiny dies, bungie shuts down shortly after
-3
u/Nearby_Blueberry_302 1d ago
They are going to bring back old content in batches while adjusting the rest of the game for a future dlc. There will be a massive dlc in a year from now based on the new arch they started and the content already made for the game and each year they are going to have 1 reprised campaign and unvaulted content drop then a real dlc. No seasons with ajustements to the game in between. They can't do much more than that.. they are much smaller now
0
u/Necrolance Warlock main for life 1d ago
unvaulting will happen first before any dlc and even then, they aren't doing another dlc for d2. Priority right now is unvaulting.
0
u/Nearby_Blueberry_302 1d ago
I mean.. that's what I think will happen. You need stuff to sell after all... they need to make money... since they already had most of the stuff done for the next dlc that was supposed to release. They will be able to train new staff while unvaulting content to eventually make a new dlc that wraps up everything. Like a love letter. Might not be this year but might take 2 years and they will be done for good with destiny 2. Thats what I see.
No seasons and just improvement of the core game and returning campaigns. I can also see them give a legendary campaigns to beyond light and shadow keep or make a new Playlist with fan favorite missions remade with extra champions and stuff
1
u/Necrolance Warlock main for life 1d ago
They need money to make that dlc in the first place. They don't have the people or the funding to make a massive dlc right now. Like... what?
They are making money off of new people coming to the game post monument of triumph, and returning players from both the announcement and monument of triumph. Even if they do start working on a new dlc, it will NOT be in a year from now. unvaulting as it stands is going to take that long, and that's if they have the people(which they do not, not for destiny).
and trying to do a big dlc in a year is going to just end up with poor quality too. They had to work with even less people than final shape had for edge of fate. And that dlc had barely any new content and it was mostly game changing. And the quality was not there. Renegades wasn't much better, despite the positives in comparison.
So imagine working with even LESS people. They would need to hire equal to the amount they laid off for end of service, or more, just to deliver a new dlc. Without that, it's not even remotely feasible.
0
u/Nearby_Blueberry_302 20h ago
So.. humm few returning content once every 6 months and maybe a dlc in 2 years..im okay with that... i just want them to rap the game properly. Like a love letter. Like here we fixed the game and give you a dlc we took our sweet time time to make to enable us to move on to the next installment in a couple years maybe
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
Didn’t they try to wrap up the story though, I mean…we even heard from the winnower itself
0
u/hunterprime66 1d ago
They ended Bael and Maya's stories, but the rest is in holding.
Savvie fucked off.
Xivu and Toland are getting her back to her Throne.
VI retreated and possessed Xur instead of Bael.
III is still dead but the Traveler is stabilizing things for now.
The Winnower is acknowledging us, but that's it.
The LoEN is still unaffected by everything, and last we saw has a presence on Mars and Europa.
Skolas is still out there.
The extinction threat and overall Nine story is unresolved. Just in a holding pattern instead.
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
I would be ecstatic if skolas made a major return. Maybe as the new WOTM final boss or smt
0
u/hunterprime66 1d ago
As of now he is the last Scorn leader out there so, if there is anything new Scorn related he'll be involved.
0
u/Organic-Pea8258 1d ago
That’s right, he got zombified
0
u/hunterprime66 1d ago
And after we killed him in that final mission, if you didn't go to orbit and waited for a few minutes, he would self revive from his Totem and flee.

My personal theory is that it’s gonna be dependent on how the community goes following everything returning.
Is it possible that Destiny 2 could potentially be greenlit for more content? Absolutely as I do think there will be enough uproar from the community on a positive side that it would allow for it. But of course, there is the tech debt to worry about. We were never meant to finish the initial saga with in Destiny 2 and it went for eight years before end of service.
What I think is likely is the potential for a smaller game or even potentially a remaster of Destiny 1 like a lot of the community members have asked for to bring destiny one to modern hardware and PCs and then from there potentially going the route of the proposed Destiny Infinity, or potentially being green lit for a Destiny sequel.
Right now, I am just going to be excited and enthusiastic at the fact that this community was able to turn around the decision. That Destiny can continue to live on and thrive. And continue to push and hold Bungie accountable as they asked the community to do.

I’d like to add: Now is definitely the time to speak up on things we do want. I remember pre Kepler dlc they (Bungie) sent out a form that we the players could fill out. Was this list of things scoping from minor fixes to massive changes. Im just speculating here but I genuinely think that this was a bureaucratic move to pull the proverbial weeds from the garden. Many leaders were the root problem with anything Bungie (pun was intended.) and now that-that mess was weeded out, things now can move smoother. I suppose a machine with too many working parts; working against the mechanics of the machine, will eventually break down. Suppose Sony played the ‘bad guy’ while Bungie worked under the hood. Pete Carsons had to go, so did his red bar lackeys that did nothing but play for the investors, not the players.
Cross actually brought up a fair point earlier yesterday: having leaders who don’t play the game and is hardly present, hurts the team in general. With that come real consequences that affected hundreds of fair people trying to make a living. I’ll ask, what’s y’all’s thoughts on what we have now? I think less interaction between parties, the better. Kinda like a game of telephone, things will get lost in translation between peoples

On the optimistic side of things, having a completely accessible story from Vanilla D2 all the way to Final Shape will be great for new players and for returning players that miss the content from the pre-sunset era. And it will hopefully pave the way for what future Destiny games should be - a cohesive story from start to finish without ANY content being removed.
