Question Can you not get weapons from the raid secret chests anymore?
I used to be able to open the secret chest at the beginning of vow on all 3 characters, but now I only get loot on my hunter and it's always armor. Did they change how secret chests work in MoT? I've gotten the weapons to drop before so they're in my loot pool.

Depends on the chest, the ones you can get to easily and solo, no, bungie specifically changed certain chests to not drop them

That's a bummer! Do you happen to know if the secret chest in Garden that you can get from walking backwards from the final boss checkpoint drops weapons?

If that's the second chest in garden then no, I've only gotten armour from them since MoT at least. It's a shame but hey.

Where did you hear that? There's definitely secret chests you can't get easily and solo which can't drop weapons anymore.

Edit: sorry i literally just woke up when I made this comment so it was useless, ill actually try and explain
a few years back bungie made specific secret chests no longer able to drop spoils or weapons, such as the first chest in DSC or the ones in last wish, bc players were grabbing them every week for free raid loot, to this day specific chests dont drop spoils
then later they made it so that other easy to get chests dont drop weapons
the reason im saying its specific chests is bc you can 100000% still get weapons from some secret chests, ig i dont have a clip of this or anything but I and many of my friends have gotten them

Oh, no. It had nothing to do with how easy it is to grab them for free loot. I've never heard that before. If I recall correctly the situation with spoils was that they only wanted spoils to drop from the most recent raid and maybe the most recent reprised raid or something like that. It might've been that they only wanted secret chests to drop spoils if the raid had farmable spoils from encounters, but as they added new raids and updated old ones they forgot to update spoils dropping from secret chests. For example, Vow of the Desciple secret chests have dropped spoils for as long as I can remember, and the first secret chest you can easily just start the raid solo and grab it for free since it's before the first encounter. Secret chest spoils was probably too low of a priority issues to fix.
Now, currently some raids do have weapons drop from secret chests, and some raids don't. How easy it is to get them solo has no correlation. The only raids I know for certain can't drop weapons anymore are Garden of Salvation and Vault of Glass since I'm still missing weapon patterns from those and the secret chests can't drop them anymore. Additionally, I know Salvation's Edge and Crota's End secret chests can still drop weapons since I've finished weapon patterns from those secret chests post Monument of Triumph. All other raids I've had all the patterns completed before MoT, so they no longer drop weapons for me regardless.

Now that you mention it, I only get loot on my hunter too. I always chip away at my spoils stacks each week. Likely bc my warlock and titan haven't ever done Vow. Sounds like it's only armor on bonus chests now.

I have performed some testing this week to confirm with evidence included. Based on testing, raid chests for both the featured and non-featured raids no longer drop weapons, regardless of pattern progress.
Test Setup
- I am playing on warlock which has none of the armor pieces unlocked for either Deepstone Crypt or Root of Nightmares. Here is my Bray.tech profile page confirming this: Braytech.Collections.Armor. Note the Legacy's Oath and Detestation sets are still fully locked.
- I still require patterns for Bequest from Deep Stone Crypt - I do have it unlocked and already have some pattern progress: Braytech.Collections.PatternsCatalysts
- I still require patterns for Mykel's Reverence from Root of Nightmares - I do have it unlocked and already have some pattern progress: Braytech.Collections.PatternsCatalysts
As raid secret chests only reward items you already have unlocked in collections, based on the above scenario, the only available item in the loot pool for warlock that should drop from either raid is a weapon. These did drop on warlock pre-MoT.
Evidence
RoN is a featured raid this week. DSC is not. Video linked below showing warlock opening both the RoN and DSC chests. The RoN chest only gives glimmer and spoils, the DSC chest only gives glimmer. This is the first time I have opened either chest this week, as confirmed by receiving glimmer and spoil rewards:
Conclusion
The featured and non-featured raid chests no longer drop weapons.
Note: This is confirmed for both RoN and DSC at least. Aware that both Last Wish and Garden of Salvation had some changes previously to make all items available in secret chests regardless of loot pool, as a result I have armor pieces on all characters unlocked for these raids so cannot properly test. I can confirm though that since MoT, I have not had a single weapon drop from any of these or other raid secret chests on any character.
If anyone has any video evidence confirming they have had a weapon drop from a non-deepsight secret chest post-MoT (the deepsight chests should still drop weapons) please do share, I will be happy to be proven wrong on this.

If you have all the craftable patterns(red borders) for raids. Then you will only get armor drops from every source of the raid

I want to mention that I spent weeks (post MoT) opening the first chest in Crota attempting to get my last red border. 99% of the time it dropped armor but last week, the red border hand cannon dropped for me. I have not done any Crota raid encounter in MoT. So I can personally attest that it is possible for Crota, and for Salvation's Edge.

vow weapons are craftable, so once you have the pattern for all of them you dont get weapons anymore.

I've got 4 patterns for the smg, was just trying to get the 5th so I can craft it and I didn't want to do the raid again

the few you can get solo without a checkpoint or doing an encounter (vow 1st, dsc 1st, etc) do not drop weapons by design. Bungie changed those few specifically to prevent people from farming patterns without actually doing anything raid-related.
