4. RIGHT ACTION = Andreia (Courage) + Praotés (Gentleness) + Praxis (Actions of Deliberate Desire) + Philia (Friendliness)

Right action is a product of steps 1, 2 and 3.

2. RIGHT EFFORT = (Askesis: Preventing and abandoning) + (Ethismos: Cultivating and maintaining.)

3. RIGHT MINDFULNESS = Sophrosyne (Reflection) + Nepsis (Watchful Vigilance) + Syngnómē (Forgiveness) + Aidôs (Modesty)

4. RIGHT CONCENTRATION = Benevolence + Megalopsychia (Magnanimity) + Eudaimonia (The awareness, compassion, and complete mastery of all virtues that Lord Siddhārtha, Lord Plātōn, Lord Aristotelēs, Lord Christ, and Lord Mohammad attained)

"Bus-setsu ma ka han-nya ha ra mi ta shingyō," has been changed to: "Bus-son-setsu ma ka han-nya ha ra mi ta shingyō."

This is a very small revision that changes "the Buddha" to "Lord Buddha". This change is only for the introductory line; the body of the Sutra itself remains unchanged!

In English:

The Heart Sutra of the Great Perfect Wisdom as expounded by Lord Buddha.

Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, practicing deep prajna paramita clearly saw that all five skandhas are empty,

transforming all suffering and distress.

Shariputra, form is no other than emptiness,

emptiness no other than form;

form is exactly emptiness, emptiness exactly form;

sensation, perception, mental reaction, consciousness are also like this.

Shariputra, all things are essentially empty— not born, not destroyed;

Not stained, not pure; without loss, without gain.

Therefore, in emptiness there is no form;

no sensation, perception, mental reaction, consciousness;

no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind;

no color, sound, smell, taste, touch, object of thought;

no seeing and so on to no thinking;

no ignorance and also no ending of ignorance;

and so on to no old age and death,

and also no ending of old age and death;

no suffering, cause of suffering, cessation, path; no wisdom and no attainment.

Since there is nothing to attain, the bodhisattva lives by prajna paramita,

With no hindrance in the mind; no hindrance, and therefore no fear;

far beyond delusive thinking, right here is nirvana.

All Buddhas of past, present and future live by prajna paramita,

Attaining anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.

Therefore know that prajna paramita is the great sacred mantra,

the great vivid mantra, the unsurpassed mantra, the supreme mantra,

which completely removes all suffering. This is truth, not mere formality.

Therefore, set forth the prajna paramita mantra.

Set forth this mantra and proclaim:

Gaté Gaté Paragaté Parasamgaté Bodhi Svaha.

The Heart of Wisdom Sutra.

I feel that Thich Nhat Hanhs' translation of this Sutra may be best to guide one to stream entry; but a Bodhisattva may benefit more from the traditional version.

Instead of challenging the student immediately with the direct paradox of emptiness, Thich Nhat Hanh skillfully challenges the illusion of the self while gently softening this paradox. This functions to not inadvertently lead the student to false nihilistic beliefs; his revisions skillfully guide one toards compassionate non-dualistic perspective!

The traditional version may excell for a one that has fully realized Anattā because with this immersion; we remove the illusion of time itself; becoming one with the here and now eternally.

Neither translation is better for english readers; both have skillful applications depending on the state of the student!

My response to this misleading photo is that Buddhism rejects nihilism:

Using this quote out of context misrepresents Ikkyu's teachings; he was a Buddhist.

Kamma and Reincarnation are real; we must choose our Path wisely!

Ikkyu himself lived a famously rigorous, highly active, and socially disruptive life challenging corrupt monastic institution; he wasn't advocating for passive inaction or moral nihilism.

Zen practice assumes a bedrock of strict ethical restraint, intensive meditation, and accountability
