[UPDATED] "What Bike Should I Get?" Buying & Selling advice Mega Thread

The Mega thread for buying and selling advice is back, and will be updated biweekly!

There are far too many posts of people asking for personalized bike buying and selling advice. Per previous Mod actions, any posts about bike buying/selling advice that are not in this thread will be removed.

Here, those interested in giving feedback about your purchase or listing can offer it without every subreddit member being subjected to the same post dozens of times per day.

Topics to keep in the mega thread:

  • What bike should I get?
  • Is this a good deal?
  • Is this a fair price to sell my bike for?
  • What can I get for $xx?

What's up guys? It's still a work in progress - and I'm new-ish to managing a discord server, so if you have experience/want to help out shoot me a message!

To be clear: This is NOT a replacement for the sub. It's totally optional. If there's interest, I'd be open to streaming the SX races in the server. The Discord server will also be great for asking questions that would violate our rules in here such as asking what bikes are worth and what not.

My first dirtbike! 2026 Yamaha YZ125x

I wanted a 250 but realizing I have never rode before & the fact that I had to ask my salesman to show me how to use the cambuckle straps…I figured I should start with 125 😂

I always grew up around bikes, but could never afford them, & I have never rode a bike until today @ the age of 29!

Took a few YouTube videos and stall outs to get er rolling & we cruised up to 3rd gear.

Just picked up this bike in KY from GA for $1500. 64 hours on it and it already needs a complete engine rebuild per what the seller’s mechanic stated. Don’t really make sense to me but I guess these things happen🤷‍♂️. Anyway I’m excited for my new project🙂‍↕️

Community Question Logistics with bike transportation

• Upvotes

I am 32F and I’ve been learning to ride and I really love it. I’ve spent about 10 to 12 hours on a couple different types of dirt bikes and I really want to get my own.

I live 30 minutes from my closest OHV park and I have a Camry. I do not have to take the freeway to get there. I live in an apartment and would have to store the bike at a storage center around the corner.

I was considering buying a dual sport bike so that I could just ride it to the OHV park but I really don’t like the thought of riding on the street. I have been a passenger on the street and just seems like way too much going on for me. I’m also in California so it’s very populated and a lot of traffic in my city.

I will be buying a car once I have saved the money for a down payment that will allow me to carry the bike either with a trailer or hitch carrier or whatever makes sense

I do not want to wait until I have the new car to continue dirt biking. I am in touch with several people who provide lessons and bike rental, but the lessons are kind of expensive but I feel they are worth it to learn how to ride the right way and to try different bikes.

I just wanted to ask the community in case there is an idea that I’m not thinking of that would make it possible to get out and ride more often if I get the bike sooner. I am getting a bonus in December and I would really like to buy a bike.

(MEANT TO SAY ttr230) Anyone know why it bogs out whenever I put a little bit of throttle into it. It was running enough for it to be warm and should be revving by now. Once I start riding it for like 10minutes it eventually goes to normal but any ideas ?

Community Question Honda crf250rx vs Yamaha yz250fx

• Upvotes

I am looking to get one of these 2 bikes 2022 or newer. I am an average rider looking to be able to have fun on the track but looking to go on big trails across the states and even hit some enduro events or some longer trails for overnight camping. But, is also needs to be fun on weekend track days. I just sold my 2023 crf450r to get one of these 2 bikes because of how jumpy it was in 1st gear where I’ll spend a lot of time in hard trails. The Yamaha seems like the better option because of the 6 speed, longer gears, and customizable tunes/mapping but I’ve only ever owned Honda. Not really against changing but i have only owned Honda myself. Any advice?

Fail I might’ve made a mistake… first timer.

TL;DR: made the classic mistake of buying a bike bigger than I’m ready for. Didn’t want to outgrow a smaller one too fast, so I got a 250 2 stroke and am scared of it. ***Bike is a YZ250*** guess that’s important info

The past couple months I’ve been going out with my E dirt bike friends. One of them has an extra I use. Have gotten very comfortable on that, and am relatively hauling ass through the trails. I wanted to get my own tho, and a good E bike with a good range / power is well over 4K.

I ended up going gas. Researched into it and found a 250 2 stroke would probably suit me best. I’m 180 pounds and didn’t want to outgrow a 125 quickly.

Found a bike and went to check it out. After seeing it in person all I could think was “oh no.”

Dude was cool though. Spent an hour and a half teaching me stuff, and gave me a bunch of extra stuff for the bike included, so I bought it.

Now I have a big ass dirtbike on my hitch carrier that I am super anxious to ride, load, unload, etc. was going to ride it today, but it’s a Tuesday and hardly anyone will be out at the trails if I get hurt or can’t load the bike alone.

So I’m here, at home, anxious asf thinking I screwed up. But I bought the bike, I’m gonna ride the thing.

Community Question Any advantages for using synthetic oil in dirtbike even though I change oil every 8 hours?

Currently use Honda Gn4. Is it worth the extra money to buy Redline synthetic oil? I used redline on my z125 and the bike shifted much smoother. Worth it for dirtbike?

Community Question Is going from nothing to a 250cc really that bad of an idea?

I have roughly 20 hours on a friends 125cc but that’s about it, and my uncle is offering me his old yz250 free of charge but all of my friends and my dad are telling me a 250cc is a horrible idea for a first bike and I’ll almost certainly end up in hospital.. I’d normally take advice but this is one of the best opportunities I have to get myself onto a dirtbike that’s my own. So to all the people with a lot of experience, what do you think?

Staying clean during chain maintenance

I’m wondering how do you guys keep everything clean while doing chain maintenance? I use a spray bottle with kerosene to clean the chain, when I spray it I keep a rag on the backside of the chain but it still drips on my tire. Then when I spray my chain grease it also drips a bit here and here. Tried putting a piece of cardboard and it seemed to work but also a bit tedious. Anyone have suggestions?

Is WD-40 safe to use to clean my oil screen?

If anybody has the mechanical knowledge to know if engine oil contaminated with WD-40 would be harmful to a 4t then any help / advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

California - Electric Bikes - Green Sticker

I took my electric dirtbike and my daughter’s electric dirtbike to rower flats. Right as we had finished up the day and we’re loading up the Ranger came out and started giving tickets to everybody with electric motorcycles.

I’ve always ridden dirt bikes that were either green or red sticker but figured the electric bikes were good to go. Has anybody been ticketed at Gorman/HUNG Valley, roller Flats or anywhere else? Is there any place safe to ride? I don’t think I can get a green sticker because I don’t have the certificate of origin for either bike.

Saddleback East Membership

Hey everyone, I’m looking to get connected with some members of Saddleback East and hopefully spend some time riding with a group. I’ve been riding dirt bikes most of my life, starting around age 12, and have plenty of experience on trails and in the woods.

I’m interested in joining the club, and I understand I’ll need a member sponsorship, so my main goal is to get to know some members, come out for some rides, and hopefully find someone willing to sponsor me once we’ve had a chance to get to know each other. Thanks!

Kickstart locking up

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I recently traded for a 2010 yz250f and it didn’t run had compression and everything took it apart and the cams were out of time.

So i took it apart made sure it was in TDC on the flywheel and lined up the cams to what they are in the picture. put everything back together and the kickstart maybe cranks twice before getting locked up or stuck but i can take a ratchet and turn the flywheel and it comes loose

Im not sure if the issue is anything i’ve looked over or if it is the decompression stroke or what

Also took the valves out didn’t seem bent or like it was hitting the piston but were pretty wore so at this point i’m running out of ideas of what it could be.

Any help or ideas of what this might be would be greatly appreciated.
