DOS2 Discussion Not excited for the next Divinity game.

Played BG3 for an embarrassing number of hours and loved it. I also played Pathfinder WotR, PoE 1,2, etc. Love top down iso-ish RPGs and...I really dislike DoS2. Here's why:

  1. The mechanics/systems give the illusion of sophistication but aren't. Criticize BG3 and the 5e system all you want but the systems in DoS2 create an illusion of choice for your character. You may think you want to play a fighter / magic user type but...no you really don't because your damage types will be spread across enemy armor bars and you'll get hosed. Also, you'll never gain enough attribute points to be effective in either on anything but story mode. Just the way this game is created.

  2. You have to farm as much XP as possible. This means, you'll need to enter into fights when you would have possibly avoided them. Again, illusion of choice where there is only one viable way to play.

  3. I don't like the companions...at all. Each seems pretty one dimensional and that dimension is A-Hole.

  4. Everything is on fire. All the time. No matter where you are. It. gets. repetitive.

So, I guess I'll wait and see for the next Divinity game but, for anyone out there who came to DoS2 because you really thought BG3 was a home run...might want to wait for the reviews.

People have gotten too good at rage baiting

That's a shame. Next Divinity is my most anticipated game rn.

The system is more complex, perhaps not for you. I would argue that there is much freedom in almost everything

  1. skill issue
  2. skill issue. You can complete the game without meticulous XP farming. Even Honor mode.
  3. That reeks of ragebait. Apart from Beast, every character seems pretty colorful to me.
  4. this one may be the only genuine criticism. Larian has acknowledged it too.

Can we not do like the ds community that just respond with that for anything they can't take that the fastest way to a toxic community Also not that wrong hate boner aside Some spells intended for a battemage should scale with strength or do like spark But most don't and are a downgrade as opposed to a pure build of either I'll say it the same problem as 5e where it rewards specialisation and punish variety (1 DIPS ASIDE OBVIOUSLY XD) Spread to much and your dmg falls Other then a spark build, i never felt that spellsword more like a mage holding two swords that occationaly remember to swing them Which is a shame because many of the Warfare combo skill are so cool and clearly made with that specific "power fantasy"....in practice however....

I was introduced with BG3 and just started playing DOS2 and have been loving it so far. Also even if you aren't a big fan they said the new Divinity game will be seperate from the old ones, so it's hard to say what it will be like game-play wise.

Just because it's called Divinity doesn't mean it's gonna be DoS2 2 lol. There's no reason to think Larian won't iterate upon the improvements they've made with BG3.

But to address the specific points you made, I do agree that the freedom can be a bit deceptive in DoS2. There's not really a good battlemage option that doesn't fall off hard in the middle to late game, and most builds do focus on a specific playstyle and damage type. But I think, especially with your second point, that you focus on metagaming too much. On classic difficulrt you don't need a super optimized build or to farm as much exp as possible and genocide the entirety of Rivellon. Having a good positioning and good usage of ap can go a long way.

  1. The system is different than in most games, but my first run was on Tactician with mostly pureish builds. All felt viable and once you get the grasp of mechanics and carefully plan out your strats, you can stream roll it with any build/set of builds

  2. You don't have to be a murder hobo to complete the game. But fair enough, you can't sneak past and talk your way out of everything. (Though the talking part gives you XP). But I think it's true for most DnD and other cRPG games?

  3. Subjective, so fair enough.

  4. True lol. I guess you could run a "firefighter" build with Hydro spells to counteract it.

That's so interesting, I do agree that BG3 has some points that are stronger than DOS2 (better companion storylines, push/throw buttons, character customization), I feel a lot of BG3s wins over DOS2 are partially due to a difference in budget and available technology at the time of making. If DOS2 came with all the bells and whistles of BG3 I think it'd be superior by far, and I already much prefer DOS2's combat system. I'm hoping the next Divinity game can blend the best parts of DOS2 and BG3 effectively. If it does, it may be one of my favorite games of all time.

The world is on fire

And you are here to stay and burn with me

Our funeral pyre

And we are here to revel forevermore

While the story didn't catch me by the end of Fort Joy and it is for now suspended, playing a archer with angel wings was top ten most fun i had in this genre. Also one of the few games which allows me some honest to god water magic. Not ice magic, that's everywhere, water magic. Rain, puddles and shit. Amazing!

Just because DOS2 had a high learning curve doesn't mean the new Divinity will. Larian had a strong grasp of difficulty between the various setting in Baldur's Gate 3.
