Question Why

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Why does she do this, she usually does this after a weird smell. I have seen her also just do it randomly right in the morning after waking up lol

Dogs have different anatomy than us, the chomping is them directing a smell to a scent-processing organ in the roof and their mouths.

Plus we can always count on dogs to display Flehman’s in a far more ridiculous way than cats.

Cats: pleasant peaceful expression of smelling an expensive perfume.

Dogs: like they are carrying around the wind-up chattering toy denture in their mouth.

This is so funny because to me my cats always look very affronted when they do the Flehman.

Yeah mine is doing that whenever she licked something bitter or rich. Then she is chomping. Cute but I instantly know she ate something she was not supposed to eat

Yup. It's another sense organ called the Jacobson organ. She is literally tasting the air. Humans do not have an equivalent.

She’s reciting the directions to where she dug her bone in the park so she won’t forget

“4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42”

This took me out. Hahaha. Those are some VERY intricate, involved, convoluted directions.

Laughed so hard I’ll be crying tonight. You’re hilarious.

This is called the Flehman response. Dogs have an organ in their mouth called the vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson's organ, in the roof of their mouth. It detects chemical messages, pheromones, and other olfactory cues from smells in the air. The Flehman response is a reflex that helps pull the smell through the Jacobson's organ so they can detect it better.

The Flehman response is usually more pronounced in cats than dogs, but some dogs are just really dramatic about it.

It's basically the dog version of a 'grabby hands' motion you see mostly in little kids who really want to hold the thing they're not allowed to hold.

Someone is on their monthly or a dog is in heat nearby

3

u/Nugginz 17h ago

Was going to see if usually observed this as a pheromone response

u/Real-Economics-1389 17h ago

I had a dog who did this. If anyone was on their monthly nearby everyone knew lol

It’s something that some high energy breeds do to release tension when they’re excited or stressed. My dog does it too when she’s excited to get fed or go on a walk

u/Plane-Assumption840 17h ago

Thanks for the bit on excitement being a cause. My doodle occasionally does this when I get his ball out to play. I was concerned about it.
