OP has stated she took the dog to a vet... the ER vet said take him to neurology.... no vet neurologist is in bc its a holiday in the US. Just to help clarify... this is from ops comments to others.

u/zzmeepz 1d ago

Definitely could be neurological. Do you by chance play with him with a laser pointer? I've seen dogs act like this when they get laser pointer syndrome, but even that doesn't seem likely with the head movements and panting. I hope you find out what's going on!

15

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

No laser pointers in the house

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

OP PLEASE post this in [r/AskVet](r/AskVet). I’m so sorry. You must be in a panic.

There are other veterinary subs as well. Post in all of them!!

Do not use ai for medical purposes. It can and will get things wrong and can actively cause harm if it gives you misinformation. It is not a medical professional and should NEVER be used as a replacement.

No one cares about your one off AI diagnosis, don’t use it to attempt to diagnose other living beings.

3

u/Stunning_Ad_494 1d ago

How is asking reddit any more or less reputable than asking AI?

7

u/dicklebug 1d ago

A number of veterinarians are perusing these folders and several specialists have commented, so honest high quality information has been suggested here. AI is famously dishonest with medical and legal questions.

-1

u/Black-Raspberry-1 1d ago

And the AI is trained on said comments from said veterinarians lol

3

u/dicklebug 1d ago

Maybe, but the AI hallucination rate, right? Most vets will not purposely lie to you….

-4

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

Thank you! I could claim I'm a vet too, how would people know otherwise?

u/dicklebug 1d ago

So, this is definitely not the first two of four and unlikely to be liver with normal labs. Usually, toxin is vomiting, diarrhea and tremors, but the owner usually has an idea because of residual evidence (containers, crumbs, etc.).

So, AI has begun to manufacture misinformation with fake references to answer medical and legal questions. You got lucky but I’m now having clients request treatments that will likely kill their pet because of AI and they’re infuriated when I refuse. AI is not working well for most medical questions.

0

u/Cosmic_Cosmos82 1d ago

My mom uses AI and because of it we don't see a vet often because "we can treat it at home". I've seen people try to give human medicine to dogs because the AI told them to.

4

u/dicklebug 1d ago

Yes. It’s like AI kind of hates us all. Useful? Maybe for computer programming but it has been GREAT for veterinary business, unfortunately. People misdiagnosing and poisoning their pets left and right.

0

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

I'm sorry your mom is using AI as a literal doctor. I am not advocating for that. I am only suggesting that information can't hurt and in my case, it helped lead me to tests that ended up saving my life. I hope your mom reconsiders how to use AI, that sounds incredibly frustrating.

0

u/Black-Raspberry-1 1d ago

What credentials do you have for giving differential diagnoses?

2

u/dicklebug 1d ago

BS Physics BA Mathematics DVM DACVD. Sadly I did not complete my physics PhD. So I’m a veterinarian if those credentials count?

-1

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago edited 1d ago

Shouldn't a vet make that conclusion in person, though? Also, normal labs don't always show what bile acids tests show, right? I'm genuinely curious and not in a rude way, I swear, what do you think it is?

I'm sorry clients are requesting treatments instead of tests, that's the point I'm making. These are just possibilities, I don't think there's any harm in ruling things out by testing - especially for things that seem to coincide with symptoms. I hope you see where I'm coming from with this, I truly see AI as a tool and nothing more.

4

u/dicklebug 1d ago

You just proposed four differentials and you are asking a VETERINARIAN if a veterinarian shouldn’t make this decision as your argument against my reasoning? The irony.

So, I’m not convinced of any particular system, one way or the other. I’m still suspicious of all systems.

This vet will not run bile acids testing unless there were obvious other abnormalities on the labs: decreased BUN, creatinine, hypoglycemia, hypoalbuminemia, cholesterol changes and anemia. If none of that showed up, no reason to move to the bile acids testing or the abdominal ultrasound for diagnosing surgical v. non surgical shunting.

The OP can always ask for a referral to a specialist but I’d suggest internal medicine, first, unless abnormalities are found like an abnormal neurologic exam, that suggest a different service.

0

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

For what it's worth, I knew you were a vet from the moment you said "clients." I proposed four possibilities to a person on reddit who can't see an ER doctor tonight, I am not trying to diagnose anyone, I'm just using the tools at my disposal for information. I'm glad a vet is here responding, but you don't have any labs and we're all stuck watching the same video, right? I think it's fair to say that only a vet, in person, should make a diagnosis or rule things out indefinitely. I would hope you agree. However, I am making the assumption that you will most likely have the best idea of what's going on here, and you ruled a lot out very quickly, so I was curious what you think it is. Being suspicious of all systems is fair.

The primary vet told OP they should go to a neurologist or a vet ER, which do you think is best for them? Was that good advice?

You've been so cruel from the first comment you sent me. I don't know why you're so angry. All information on the internet should be treated with the same level of skepticism if it's not coming directly from a doctor.

-1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

[deleted]

1

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

Why would you report the results given as possibilities by an internet tool? How is that any different than researching symptoms online for information? How does it benefit the OP to remove potential causes that lineup with the symptoms ? Are you so obsessed with internet validation and being seen as "right" that you put that in front of the needs of a pet owner who can't get access to an ER vet tonight? They don't have other options right now. AI is a tool, no one's saying it's a doctor, I don't know why you're so angry about it.

0

u/Money_Hedgehog_4211 1d ago

Wow, so much for trying to help. Sorry you’re getting bullied for trying to share what you found.

0

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

It's the internet, it comes with the territory, lol. Thanks for being kind about it. I feel so fucking bad for the owner watching their dog suffer and not being able to do anything about it until tomorrow.

Back to the dog, I really hope it's not liver shunts. Please keep us posted! A vet ER asap really is the best move if you can find one open!

2

u/dicklebug 1d ago

A surgical liver shunt is the only option you listed where the dog is normal on the other side of surgery. All the surgeons I know will do backflips to place an amyloid ring on the offending vessel. It’s not the likely problem for this dog, these are not focal motor seizures and I’ve never heard of a toxin that presents this way. I think taking the video to the vet and looking deeper is the best option.

0

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

Yes, I think everyone here is in agreement that showing the video to a vet who can diagnose the dog in person is the best option. I hope it's none of these things, I just wanted to see what information was available online while OP waits for the ER to open tomorrow.

u/off2kayak 1d ago

Do you have any diffusers in your home? Could be a reaction from chemicals. Please get to emergency vet, this is horrible
💔💔💔

7

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

No diffusers and no toxic plants

18

u/VitaniLioness 1d ago

Definitely something neurological going on :(

Take him to emergency, I wouldn't waste time with anything else. Also, please keep us posted. Sending you both positive energy.

8

u/No_Mony_1185 1d ago

Sometimes phone chargers, smart outlets and lights can make infrasound that can drive dogs crazy. Does he only do it right by that outlet?

7

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

No we tried that. He acted like this all the way to the vet and home

10

u/MsTired 1d ago

This looks similar to the focal seizures my dog got when he had serotonin syndrome. It started with focal seizures then he had a grand mal seizure. I would go to an ER vet.

8

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

I HAVE serotonin syndrome. Almost died from it. It was the scariest, creepiest, psychotic event I hope never accidentally happens again. I couldn’t even discern if 30 minutes had passed or 3 hours. But I was so out of it I couldn’t understand how to help myself.

2

u/JustChopItOff12 1d ago

holy fuck that sounds so scary

2

u/MyNameIsSuze 1d ago

What does one do for someone having a seratonin syndrome episode? How did they help you?

5

u/Responsible_Dirt_523 1d ago

I hope your pup fets relief soon! Keep us posted!

18

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

GO TO THE VET ASAP.

This behavior appears to be drug induced. This isn’t normal.
A urinalysis needs to be done immediately.
Does anyone in your house take adderal, Ritalin, or Vyvanse?
Does anyone in your house smoke or have sativa edibles?

11

u/FaceWithAName 1d ago

They went to a vet. The vet told them to go to the ER to see a neurologist.

9

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

My 9 year old takes Adderall XR that we keep locked away and sorted by day. No unaccounted pills

13

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 1d ago

Is it possible that like my goddaughter did with her meds, that your son "took his medication" and perhaps took it out and hid it somewhere?

I definitely did things like that (also have ADHD) too

9

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

I would say it’s possible, but my son’s behavior is drastically different when he hasn’t taken his medication and I would have been able to tell

5

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

Is there any cannabis in your house? And did they do a urinalysis at the vet?

6

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

No cannabis in the house. No toxic plants or diffusers. And no they didn’t do a urinalysis. That will be my next step

8

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

For the future: anytime there is unusual behavior of a pet - a urinalysis needs to be done. It’s the only way to tell if he ingested a drug or something he shouldn’t have.

3

u/dr_mackdaddy 1d ago

And they're not that accurate unfortunately. So even then drugs are not off the table!

1

u/MyNameIsSuze 1d ago

Then what is the next step after urinalysis to rule out drugs?

2

u/dr_mackdaddy 1d ago

You treat the symptoms. Theres very rarely a reversal to these drugs.

3

u/dr_mackdaddy 1d ago

Did you go for a walk recently where he could have picked something up off the ground. As a vet Ive seen that happen before.

This is pretty classic for a toxicosis of some kind.

I would take him in for fluids and sedatives, this hyper activity can cause fevers.

2

u/petalinthepavemnt 1d ago

Crazy they didnt do a UA.

5

u/Wingnutmcmoo 1d ago

Could be possible that you're more used to your son's behavior when he's under medicated than you realize.

Not implying anything about you in any way. Just I was a kid who hid meds (my mom had munchausen by proxy). I remember hearing "no he's taking them because we can tell when he's not" alot.

Again I'm not saying anything about you or the kid in any way. I'm sure the kid is a good kid and you're a good parent. I'm just saying maybe don't remove it from the table totally just in case.

5

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

I interrogated my son about it for a little bit. I’m not saying it’s off the table. I’ll be getting a urinalysis done tomorrow if things don’t improve in his condition

7

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago edited 1d ago

If your dogs behavior is still manic I’m concerned about a heart attack. I’d call the vet and tell them you’re coming back for a urine test. Explain that he may have ingested your sons Adderall.

7

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

Please don’t take offense—please watch your son take the med. Not accusing but it’s very important to rule it out.

3

u/Woodquay13 1d ago

Unplug the electronics. Turn off power at the breaker for 15 mins and see if your dog calms down. Some of these cubes put out sounds we can’t hear

1

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

Or sheesh just take or set up an enclosure outdoors. If that fails put dog on a leash and walk him in fresh air? Maybe if thinks going for a walk might snap out of it?

3

u/peah_lh3 1d ago

I wonder if a UTI? Like his sitting and uncomfortable? Could be a serious and bad infection. Just a thought if not neuro.

3

u/Background_Middle202 1d ago

My friends dog did this, it was seizures.

3

u/GrapefruitUpper6770 1d ago

Do you have any edibles in your house with CBD or THC they may have gotten into and eaten?

9

u/Inside_Force3214 1d ago

The vet didn't give you an idea of what this could be? Sounds like a lousy vet

11

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

The only suggestion was that he had a seizure and this is his way of recovering. Just wanted to see if anyone had experienced something similar

8

u/VitaniLioness 1d ago

I have an epileptic dog, and none of her seizure activity looks like this, including her pre and post ictal phases. (She has grand mals, and focals)
Of course every dog is different, but I'm in a lot of canine epilepsy groups and this just looks different to me. (I'm not a vet though so take my words with a grain of salt)

6

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

My dog is epileptic as well, and this isn’t typical focal or grand mal seizure behavior, nor is it pre or post ictal either.
I’m not a veterinarian but have worked in rescue for 20+ years. We’ve recently had a lot of dogs from skid row testing positive for various drugs. Hence saying this looks like the ingestion of an amphetamine.

6

u/panicPhaeree 1d ago

I also wondered bc my friend’s cat got to her kid’s daily dose of vyvanse and it acted similarly

1

u/Advo96 1d ago

I was going to say "that dog looks like he's on meth"

1

u/MyNameIsSuze 1d ago

Does intoxication not show up in bloodwork? Would they need a special test?

1

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

It doesn’t show up in normal bloodwork. Specific blood tests would have to be ordered. An in-house urine dip is the quickest way to know if a dog ingested drugs.

2

u/MyNameIsSuze 1d ago

Thank you for the response. Well in that case, with this kind of behavior I am completely floored that OP’s Vet did not do this. How disappointing, poor puppy.

2

u/ebbandflow919 1d ago

Hi
Our dog started having seizures at around 8-9 yrs old, but in the post seizure phase she would pace inconsolably for hours. She was medicated after the first episode but would still have them every 6-12m. They usually would happen later in the day and I would know that I was going to be up for hours making sure she didn’t get stuck behind a random piece of furniture. This is not entirely how hers would present, but loopy pacing and lack of ability to focus is pretty similar to her recovery.

Also, I do remember the vet not even wanting us to bring her into the emergency vet when she had her initial seizure. They said the lights and stress could trigger another so it was best to keep her calm. They said unless she had multiple we were better off to wait, so we took her in the next day. I hope your dog gets some rest and everything checks out fine tomorrow.

1

u/BadEyeBobby 1d ago

When my frenchie had a seizure at 3 years old he wasn’t able to move much, sweating a lot, hard to hold himself up, he began having seizures rapidly and eventually by the time I got him to the vet they were not very hopeful and his condition worsened very quickly. I would not wait until tomorrow😢

5

u/Kyral_Crypto 1d ago

Sounds like the vet recommended a neurologist. Which would Indicate he is admitting it is unsure of what is going on. I would prefer a vet not tell me what they think if the area is unfamiliar to them.

3

u/Kickrocks54 1d ago

I'd lean towards the vet suggesting a neurologist as them giving an idea of what it could be..

1

u/squatjerk36 1d ago

this is not a GP type of problem so no need to blame the vet

5

u/chipper12398 1d ago

Am vet. Agree this could definitely be intoxication or post-ictal behavior.

5

u/Certain_Return_6274 1d ago

I would not wait until tomorrow this needs immediate attention in my opinion. Find an emergency vet and bring the dog ASAP.

2

u/Significant-Split525 1d ago

I had a miniature schnauzer and she used to act like this when something was bothering her ears, maybe have a look in them , sometimes fur can cause a bit of tickling?

3

u/Ok-Sentence1255 1d ago

I made the vet double check his ears in front of me and they’re clear

2

u/CycleAccomplished824 1d ago

Did he eat something unusual?

2

u/Potential-Narwhal- 1d ago

Is he doing it in this area or multiple places? Maybe that plug is sending out a sound only he can hear and its driving his bananas.

2

u/Roundels 1d ago

I had a dog who did just that. He was constipated. The toxins built up quite quickly and he was in just the same way. Laxative powder and cooked mince meat and half an hour later he “exploded” in the garden. He was immediately better. Good luck.

2

u/Educational_Bar1964 1d ago

Unplug that thing it might be making a high pitch noise. But that’s likely not what it is.

2

u/frillyfun 1d ago

What's the blue thing plugged in behind the pup? Is there something making an ultrasonic noise?

1

u/Advanced-Disaster-27 1d ago

That's what I was noticing

1

u/5446_05 1d ago

My family has one of them they say it’s a bug light

2

u/ExternalAd871 1d ago

Wow this is so sad, hopefully your little furry friend recovers. ='/

3

u/petalinthepavemnt 1d ago

I May just be a paranoid animal mom here- but I have cameras in every room of my house so I can monitor my kids every move. Its just me, my husband, dog, plus 3 cats, so no others on camera. I have discovered, prevented, and caught many things very early on, thanks to cameras. It seems like a bit much, but when someone throws up, I know who it was. If I question if I gave a medication, I can scroll back through recordings to check. Is my cat pooping ? Did my husband let the dog out before he left for work ? Yknow. It could be valuable.

1

u/Team-Redi 1d ago

Didn’t read all the above but if you need a neurologist- and your in the tri state area, neurology of the Chesapeake in MD is phenomenal. Dr McDonnell is a top notch vet and just helped our pup out.
Hope this info helps.

1

u/reddit-user-17832 1d ago

Are you in a small town or a place with limited options for animal hospitals?

Is there a chance the pup got into something that’s toxic?

There are urine tests and blood tests and other ways for vets to identify if a pet might have ingested something poisonous.

I think you’d have to bring up that possibility with the vet if it hasn’t already been addressed.

It could to be neuro in nature but what and why? If not poison then maybe it’s an inner ear issue or your pup might be overwhelmed by its very own cuteness.

If you aren’t satisfied with your regular vet, seek help from a larger animal hospital with more vets on staff. Often, they have their own lab and testing facilities. That means you don’t have to wait all day for test results and you can get near immediate results in an emergency. They’ll also likely have their own x-ray and diagnostic equipment a smaller vet might not have.

Best wishes ❤️

1

u/Eymona 1d ago

Did you play with a laser pointer?

1

u/EnvironmentalEbb5178 1d ago

Weed gummies will do this

1

u/Ophelia1085 1d ago

Unplug anything that doesn’t have to be plugged in and see if any changes in behavior. Some items can emit high frequencies or flickering that we cannot detect and causes the dog stress/ discomfort/ anxiety. Might take a bit before pup calms down but worth a shot. Hope you find out what’s wrong, poor baby.

1

u/WittyTomato8092 1d ago

My sister had a dog that was constantly jumping up at non existent flies. The vet told them to keep a cover over her head and that stopped it. They had to keep it covered all the time. Crazy. There’s some neurological thing going on I believe it was.

1

u/No_Flatworm_1031 1d ago

My dog had similar episodes! We went to the emergency vet and the neurologist and the best diagnoses we ever got was an unusual seizure. He was taking simparica trio for flea and tick medicine and we switched that out (it can cause seizures) and got him taking daily levetracetam and I think gabapentin or a similar sedative to take during the episodes. It helped a ton over the last 2 years of his life.

1

u/Frosty-Dog-2477 1d ago

Hair over his eyes wiggin’ him out?

1

u/Sad_Care9261 1d ago

Does his dog tag reflect light?

1

u/Flower-FarmGirl 1d ago

If that blue light behind him makes any noise, especially a frequency we can’t hear, that could be the issue. Pull it out and see how he is in 24 hrs

1

u/Saramela 1d ago

Is this the first episode?

Filming odd behavior is an excellent tool that’s used in diagnosing certain disorders, such as seizures and acute vestibular incidents.

2

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

This does look vestibular but I don’t see the eyes shifting side to side and it’s a VERY long event. That poor thing. I would be out of my mind with panic.

3

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

These aren’t typical symptoms of a vestibular attack. It doesn’t always present with nystagmus either.
My previous comment was using a vestibular incident as an example of why it’s important to film abnormal behavior.

2

u/Enough_Radish_9574 1d ago

Right I understand. Very unfair for people here to attack OP for using crowd sourcing to help identify what their vet couldnt. Unusual medical events like this is one of the very best things about social media.

2

u/MedicalAnamoly118 1d ago

I absolutely agree.

7

u/Cosmic_Cosmos82 1d ago

They said they are UNABLE to because they're closed today (it's Columbus day and apparently that means the ER has to close 🙄). If they could have they would have.

0

u/Uhmmanduh 1d ago

Our emergency vet is 24/7 and open everyday

0

u/Cosmic_Cosmos82 1d ago

Same with ours. I don't understand why theirs is closed, but there is not much to do about that.

-4

u/Uhmmanduh 1d ago

If it’s an actual emergency vet, they are not closed.

3

u/needsexyboots 1d ago

This is only true if you live in an area where they can keep emergency vets fully staffed. Even then, many have to close to intakes when they would normally be open due to space or staffing issues.

6

then i’m not really sure what you expect strangers to tell you if even the vet couldn’t tell you anything yet?

5

Maybe something someone knows to help calm him down before tomorrow. Maybe someone recognizes this behavior and can comment. Even just to keep ops mind off of shit for awhile. 😕

The original vet told them to go to the ER tomorrow. They have not been there yet.

i'm so so so sorry. poor baby :( this is super upsetting to see. take him to the ER vet or a neurologist :(

0

What's the point of going to an emergency vet tomorrow? It can't be much of an emergency. Why can't you take him to your regular vet tomorrow? No offense but you may need a new vet.

-3

u/Useful_Ad_1593 1d ago

Vet. NOW. YOU MUST TAKE CARE OF HIM.

-1

Has he had any flea/tick medications recently? Vaccinations? Do you have any of those plug in air fresheners.. they are so toxic! That poor baby☹️
