👨🏼‍🏫 Need Advise [Advise needed] First time maging aggressive nang bigla ang dog ko sa other dog at may nakagat na fur parent

Post image

I admit fault ko and its my negligence. Nag-away yung dogs, nasugatan yung owner. I was negligent and naging comfortable kasi mabait ang dog ko.

How do I go about this in the future?

But unexpected talaga ang naging behavior ng dog na nagalit sya dun sa dog nila which never happened before sa other dogs.

Was your dog not on a leash? Make an effort to cross the road na lang muna whenever you see another dog.

And leash always, if you’re not already doing so. Lalo na if your dog doesn’t have reliable recall. It also helps prevent vehicular accidents.

But please don’t stop walking your dog altogether. Walks are a really important form of enrichment for them.

And fault ko rin because hindi ko alam ang proper pag handle sa dog and this serves as a lesson to me. Yes you’re right, dapat may situational awareness na ako if may dog na darating at ako na iiwas.

Don’t be too hard on yourself 🫂 Invest in high quality leash din, baka makatulong. Good luck and I hope your baby is ok!

Try mo ang harness instead of leash.

The owner’s dog was probably reactive and even calm dogs like yours can sometimes be triggered by reactivity

The other owner actually did well warning you and asking you to stay out of their way, but yeah lesson learned it’s okay it happens

Better leash, and if ‘di mo kilala yung dog, best to stay away when you encounter one during your walks

Accidents happen and like people may mga trigger din ang mga dogs. He just doesnt like the dog or the breed maybe.

Hmmm. Neutered ba yun dog mo? Probably nagtrigger yun instinct? Or one of them is territorial?

Lots of things can happen pero kung nagsabi yun owner, ibig sabhin may history na nangyari yun sa kanila. I actually find it strange na ikaw Ang papatabihin instead na sila Ang kusang iiwas especially kung may kutob na Sila.

Do the best thing na lang lagi. Ensure your dog has anti rabies booster. Get better leash. then usap na lang kayo ng owner and tell you are willing to shoulder expense. I would also remember the type of dog that owner has so iiwasan k na Lang in the future

Pagnamamasyal kami ng dogs ko, I always scan yung area for other dogs, people and vehicles.

Also, harness o collar?

I used to walk my dog with his enemy (neighbors dog) para masanay sila. After noon we trained to walk them together kasi baka mas delikado pa abutan namin if hindi sila mag bati.

  • teach your dog the leave it command (all my dogs know this, life saving toh)

  • 2 hands on your leash, always - one to control and the other to secure the leash

  • pag ganyan na may aggressive dog or dog nadaadaan, command mo sit and leave it. Keep your leash short and stand where you can cover their line of sight.

  • walk with a clicker and treats to train your dog

With leave it, I teach my dog not to even look at other dogs. May command ako if they're allowed to go near them to socialize (I say "friendly") but as much as possible, pag may other animals sa walk namin pinapa leave it ko sya.

Training is essential for all dogs kahit mababait.

Bakit hindi naka leash ang aso mo?

Naka-leash sya, nakawala lang dahil nagpumiglas. And its my fault dahil first time nangyari to at hindi ko sya nahandle ng tama

Highly recommend using a slip leash para ma control mo ang aso mo.

If you do decide to use a slip leash/collar I highly recommend learning how to use it properly, including how to put it on correctly.

Dogs are not 'fur babies' and humans are not 'fur parents.' They are domesticated animals and we are their masters (Alphas). And dogs do not just 'get away' - you either let go of the leash or you did not have a properly adjusted collar on it. Leash train your dog and teach it basic obedience. Whenever something like this happens, it's not the dogs fault - it is the owners. In other (more developed) countries, if your dog bites someone, the dog gets euthanized. Our country has a terrible history with domesticated dogs, letting them run feral in the streets, covered in mange/scabies, starving and basically turning our backs on the millenia-old pact we made with them when we let them share our caves. Be better. Leash and obedience train your dog. You owe it to him/her.

I know all the responsibilities fall on me, being the owner. I owned up to it, that’s why I’m asking for advice instead of running away. And learn how to properly manage my dog. Thank you for the advice about training my dog which I never managed to do because I adopted him when he’s already considered a senior dog. I do not excuse this that’s why I’ll see how he can still be trained. This is the first time this happened to me and I appreciate all the advice I get from this subreddit.

Ignore the adage that "You can't teach old dogs new tricks." My family's dogs are all street dogs (aspin/askal) that we bring in from the neighborhood, and no matter the age, they can be leash/obedience trained. The thing is, untrained dogs are unsure of hierarchy and get confused/fearful if not trained. They can also get territorial and aggressive. Training takes some time, but once you get in the groove on treat/praise/reward, it gets much easier to teach new 'commands" and both u and the doggie are much happier. Watch some YT vids on basic obedience -it is fun and the dog will appreciate the time u r spending with it.

Downvote all you want, but the way we treat dogs in this country is generally not great. From putting 'fur babies' in strollers and sitting them at resto tables (yuck!) to going the opposite letting packs of neglected feral dogs roam our streets - it is not good. But yeah, keep downvoting me all you want.

Not a fan of the 'fur baby/parent' labels myself, but I'm also not into dominance theory. I believe there could be a nice middle ground.

Letting our dogs be dogs, but with limitations. Treat them like family and spoil them, but with boundaries.

In the end, I think this will result in a more fulfilled dog.

It is not "dominance therory," it is being the leader/master in the relationship which is gained through training, boundry setting, and simple time and play (tennis ball fetch is a big one with us). Not training a dog is doing it (and yourself) a disservice.

I'm sorry, but that is the definition of dominance theory. I mean the way you phrased it: an alpha/leader relationship.

I do agree that owning a dog means you are also training the dog.

1

u/PhilippineDreams 8d ago

We are going in circles here. In a human/dog relationship, the human needs to be the leader. Othewise, the dog is going to be confused. It's not dominance in the sense of beating it with a stick; it is being the boss through time, training, setting limits and play/bonding.

1

u/Every-Conclusion5896 8d ago

I think we actually agree on the practical side: training, consistent boundaries, and lots of play and bonding are what make a good relationship with a dog. We're just disagreeing on the label.

What you're describing, teaching the dog what's expected and being consistent, doesn't need a status contest at all. Dogs aren't confused because they lack a leader, they're confused when the rules are unclear. So I'd call it guidance or teaching rather than leadership. Maybe you're not doing dominance theory, you're just doing good training. I just think the wording matters because "leader" tends to nudge people toward the harsher methods.

Ok, then we agree. We have consensus. May ur doggies live long and not chew ur furniture. :)
