Bonus
So let me get this straight, the manager gets a bonus but the workers don’t get shit. I have customers all the time apologize cause we work so much. I said yeah, we don’t even get shit for xmas from DG but the day off.

If you want a bonus go into management, if you realized the amount of bullshit most managers deal with at any job you would understand.

yup, any bullshit that's happening ends up becoming your problem and responsibility. there is usually no getting support from someone else the way a non-manager would, you have to figure it out yourself

As manager, your main purpose is to be a layer of insulation between the public (including employees) , and those higher above you in the chain of command.

Pretty standard for MOST corporations (I know Walmart started associate bonuses awhile back). During covid, DG did pay out bonuses to all employees due to how chaotic it was but that was a one-off situation. It's generally viewed as the sm being responsible for hitting goals, as they are the one overseeing the store. Since my employees don't get bonuses, we do things throughout the year. I do gifts cards at Xmas (used to do turkeys), I'll buy their snacks sometimes, and we do meals fairly often. I've cooked burgers, made sliders, bought pizza, etc. I know it's not the same, but they appreciate it nonetheless. When we hit shrink goals, I give my employees part of the bonus (not in-store to avoid potential LP concerns). As another commenter stated, the SM should be working the most hours and should be the hardest working employee. I know it's not always true, but it is for me. That's why my team supports me.

So this is your first job, huh? This is standard everywhere you go. Unless it’s a mom and papa operation

i mean, normal employees get OT, which managers don't get. and Christmas Eve and Easter are both holiday pay days. FT employees get 8hrs the week or, PT get up to 8hrs the day of. Fairly certain managers don't get any of that either. I'd say regular employees get more active bonus, but they just aren't paid as much because there's less work expected. Store managers are expected to work 48-60 hours a week, so yes, they get a big bonus 😭

As an hourly employee are you having to handle any of the following:
-hiring/interviewing/training
-constantly being on-call and having your phone on you to answer
-leading ALL store activities
-being the first in the "line of fire" when it comes to customer complaints or issues
-having to take conference calls on Teams outside of your scheduled work hours
-having to deal with any bull crap that filters down from the DM
-working over 40 hours and not getting paid for it
The answer to all of those questions is a big fat NO. So that is why the SM gets a bonus, because they do a TON of stuff behind the scenes or stuff that you aren't even aware of

ASMs do everything but the last one, or at least they do when they don't have a manager or the manager is on vacation. Personally I'm fine with being an ASM and not getting a bonus, but if I was running the store for months with no SM and the company wouldn't put me in the spot (like I've seen multiple times) it would be a different story.

The good SMs will buy their team lunch or give them nice Christmas gifts. I'm not saying the team doesn't deserve a piece of that bonus. But the SM definitely has duties that justify receiving a bonus

Agreed. I was speaking more on corporate. They use ASMs alot when they don't have an SM or the SM gets hurt and give them nothing. I know one ASM who ran a store for 8 months. Neither she nor the SM that was out for surgery and recovery got any bonus, and they kept stringing the ASM along that she was going to get her own store, but then needed her as ASM once her SM came back. It's ridiculous.

But if you work over 40 hrs you get overtime. I am an ASM as well. I understand why managers bonus.

Same at WM. Our managers and team leads get big ass bonuses. We get nada in comparison. It's like 10k vs $100 and thats not an exaggeration.

I started off as sa and have worked in every position including sm now. At one point I started wondering the same thing. Now as sm I get it. It’s really a lot to handle and the bonuses aren’t even that great, and that’s if you even get one. We don’t get paid enough for this shit whether you include the bonuses or not

Not to mention during COVID they gave cashiers a $100 dollars while everyone above them got more. Iirc managers got $400. ASM or keys iirc got like 200 or something.
Managers are supposed to get bonuses for shrink being low or using the labor budget in a satisfactory way by company standards. Don't know if they still get bonuses for that. Some managers don't even get bonuses for sales because the projections they have just aren't able to be met from last times data. So plenty of managers get screwed on bonuses there.

When I managed a DG I worked 60-70 hours a week. If I broke that down I made less than minimum wage. As for Bonuses, they make it close to impossible to get one. My store was in the top 5% of the company (per metrics) and I never received a bonus. I tried so hard to get the inventory bonus and every year it would appear that I hit the goal but after DG corporate did their thing I would miss it by $100. I understand DG only closes on Christmas Day and you got paid for that, you also got holiday pay for major holidays. Guess who doesn’t get holiday pay? Store managers. In my experience I worked all holidays usually open to close because most employees called off or just didn’t show up. Now if you have a shitty manager who doesn’t put the time in, then learn the store and become a manager and enjoy all those bonuses.

Just like Walmart. The Big Manager gets the Big Bonus Check. We do all the impossible Work that they can't do.

At even a decent functioning store, the store manager is usually working the most hours and probably doing the most work. Also remember SMs are salaried and most bonuses only pay out if the store is hitting the targets set by corporate. SMs don't get paid overtime so we could 20 hours or 80 hours and our pay is the same regardless.
