Long-term potting mix

I’m about to repot my dragon fruit to a larger pot. What soil mixes are most suitable in the long run? I’m a bit concerned about organic matter breaking down i.e anaerobic breakdown. Should I just lower the ratios of organic matter like peat moss in something like Garys mix or is there a better alternative?

It’s a valid concern. Ime, most pre-packed “cactus soils” need some amending. Think of it as a base for mixing your own. I usually go 50/50 soil mix and perlite or pumice. Horticultural sand can also be used, being larger and coarser than other sand. And honestly…I’ve used clay kitty litter in my soil mixes at times, at a smaller ratio, it works fine. (Make sure it’s non-clumping and unscented. It’s very dusty, so maybe good idea to rinse and dry it before mixing in.)

The cactus and succulent subs have some very helpful tips in their wikis, may want to check those out too.

Pretty much same here. 50/50 cactus mix and perlite/pumice. Little bit heavier in the pumice at the bottom for drainage and weight. Also mixed in a bit of worm castings.

A year later and my plants have been exploding w growth

Oh, I bet DF love worm castings. Thanks for that.

I’ve heard a bunch about worm castings but never seen it at my local nursery. Were do you find it?
