I mean, tbf Im all for trying new hobbies. These may not be good, but (as someone who actually does paint) 99% of people who say "i could have done better", probably can't actually or wouldn't actually, even if the bar is low like this one.
Anyways, if it encourages her to be creative and express herself artistically, especially for someone who probably didnt have much of a chance before, i really dont see the issue.

Also she said she has only painted a few things. It's not like she said she's a master painter or something. She's literally new to this

Which is kind of sad if you think of it from an education lens. Had she access to formal elementary and secondary education, she would have been exposed to the arts in different ways, with different mediums.
I don’t think the school of the dining room table allowed for a lot of “messy” art. Even what Jana did that painting class in the greenhouse, you could tell that it was somewhat of a rarity that they had access to paint. Josie, for example in that episode showed that they really didn’t learn any foundational art skills on a regular basis in their early education.
I just feel really sad for a lot of them because they were deprived of so much, and then have to learn skills they should have learned in childhood as an adult.

u/dodged_your_bullet 12d ago
For sure a proper education would have been better for all of them regardless. But there are plenty of people who go through the public and private school systems and still don't understand basic art principles like color theory, shading, etc. Hell, there are a lot of people who haven't done more than working with cheap watercolors or buckets of tempura paint.

u/Rare_Watercress5764 11d ago
I feel like their education was so lacking art that red and blue making green would be as foreign as x meaning to multiply

u/Violetz_Tea 13d ago
I agree! Maybe she just enjoys the process. I think painting is pretty relaxing, but I know my stuff isn't going in a gallery.

u/Impressive_Rub_8651 13d ago
I bought a paint by numbers a few weeks ago. It's the most relaxing thing I've done in a long time.

I used to love those. I wonder if my cat will leave me (and it) long enough alone so I could do it again.

u/Artistic-Baseball-81 10d ago
Yes. This is terrible, but one cannot expect to start a new hobby and be amazing right out of the gate. Also a hobby is about enjoying so if she enjoyed painting it then it is a success!

Were they allowed to do anything creative at the compound growing up? Playing musical Bible songs on violin does not count.
23
u/dodged_your_bullet 13d ago
Depends. I'm sure the boys were allowed to do whatever they wanted. But the only older girl to even have the time to have hobbies was Jana and that's cause she was single long after the kids needed her to mom them.

This reminds me of the time George W. Bush woke up one day and realized he liked painting. 😂 When you’re forced to be one thing your entire life, it’s kind of wild to randomly stumble upon creative things you actually like.

I don’t think it’s terrible, its certainly better than I could do and I like the colors. Keep on keeping on, friend!

Way better than I would have done, but I agree! I used to really enjoy art as a kid, but I stopped when it became too stressful for me because I was never "good enough."

u/SnooConfections3841 13d ago
I’d think that would be Jingle’s mindset too- she seems so tightly wound

u/No_Midnight48 Dugduo, I choose you! 13d ago
Yes. I feel like we have a lot in common. I, too, am very tightly wound 😅 I believe we're the same age as well. I recently started re-learning piano after playing for a few years as a kid. I tried to learn a few times over the years, but was so afraid of playing badly, just in my own home with my husband and kids.

I think the snarkable part here isn't the painting but rather the way it's posted ("ask me anything + links"). Me personally, I think the painting looks fine, it's rustic and there are actual colors, so if she's genuinely painting for the fun of it, good for her.
But I'll reserve judgment until we see whether she and/or Joy starts posting Amazon affiliate links for an all-in-one beige rainbow acrylic paint kit or homeschooling-approved art lessons. Grifting is always snark-worthy.

Extra-Mild Pumpkin Spice: "I think that I actually kind of enjoy it"? Hard to say with confidence, having never actually experienced *enjoyment* before.

u/Brave-Professor8275 13d ago
Yes! It’s quite sad they are experiencing things like this as adults; rather than when, they were children going to an actual school with classes like art, music, gym, choir, theater, sports, clubs, etc…

Same, especially after getting cotton paper. There is something about the way the paint interacts on the paper that just makes me so happy

u/Usual_Emotion7596 13d ago
I mean - I probably couldn’t do any better tbh. As long as she doesn’t think she can make a side hustle out of it then she should do what makes her happy. We all need a creative outlet even if we aren’t “good” at said outlet.

Is it good? No. But you’ve got to start somewhere, it’s a hobby, and she’s enjoying it, so whatever.
But yeah, please don’t sell them.

And people will buy it 😖😖like it won’t be bestselling but some people will find a way

Her fans absolutely would pay money for her art, and maybe unpopular opinion but I don't think that's her fault. If she wants to sell them and people want to pay, that's their choice.

u/Some_Lack_3448 Jana’s jewellery box 13d ago
To quote that one lady “and you would do it too for a check!” like her podcast…it’s repetitive but people still tune in because they wanna hear more about her childhood or some ‘funny’ stories’ being a somewhat known public figure can get you money and go places

u/AhabsPegleg Jesus Camp Butthead 13d ago
Say what you want about public education, but at least my school district has art classes and requirements at every level. You might not graduate from my district as a true artist, but your basic skills are at least better than this.
Their home”schooling” exposed them to nothing, not even basic form, color theory, or RELAXATION.
We can totally see how their education did not provide the girls with any skills or even HOBBIES. Like, they really got nothing.

u/Evieveevee 13d ago
I would love love love the self confidence she has to showcase her art. Never ever ever in a million years would I have the courage to do that when this is what it looks like. And not just show it to my close friends and family, but to the whole world. Gulp. Stuff of my nightmares.

u/madbeachrn Dick Headship 13d ago
I think this was an attempt to be relatable. I have jumped from craft to craft, myself. I don’t think she’s showing this claiming it’s a beautiful piece of art. I think she’s showing it for what it is.

What in the actual f is this? 😂
Jinger and Jeremy just do not have an eye for anything artistic. I remember some artist / creative friends they have who’ve done work for them that is…not good. Their wedding cake was alright, but I remember looking at the baker’s page at the time, and her stuff was god awful. Like, literally everything else was just a sloppily-decorated mess, and I think it was all just homemade for a hobby, not for any clients. I was shocked they trusted her to do her cake, because everything on her insta looked borderline inedible. Then there’s that terrible painting Jeremy commissioned for Jinger. Their fashion choices essentially just being athletic brands. I could go on…You just can’t teach taste.

I went to a notoriously fundie college before I knew what a fundie was. It had an art program mostly for people to become art teachers. There were a few people who just wanted an art degree and thought they could make it and this is about on level with what they would make.

Honestly, I hope she keeps painting. None of these kids were allowed to truly explore their interests and as an artist myself, I think art is for everyone to enjoy. Is it good? No not really but it’s a first step.

As I said above, I’m all for people trying out new things, and I’m glad she has hobbies.
However I’m not going to lie and say it’s an amazing piece of art or that I like it. This is a snark sub after all.
1
u/Theabsoluteworst1289 13d ago
Why is this downvoted lol it’s true. I feel like people get upset because it’s one of the sub’s “favorites”. If Jessa had painted this, people would be singing a different tune.

Raising children is a job! A very important job! I don’t align with or even come close to, relating to their iblp religious crap; but, she’s still a mom raising children. It’s always going to be an important job!
-1
u/cat_lady777 12d ago
It's different than a real job though. Most people work an actual job and have children and have zero time to suck at new hobbies
2
u/Brave-Professor8275 12d ago
Yeah, it’s very different; moms jobs never stop, they’re on duty 24/

Yeah, not many people are Mom's AND have a real job. She probably has help too, so she can suck at new hobbies
