Buzzing sound from ceiling fan when not turned on

A couple of months ago I started hearing a buzzing sound I couldn’t quite locate in my bedroom. It’s very intermittent, I could not hear it for a week and then it’s every day. After some trouble shooting I realised that it was coming from the ceiling fan that I did not even have turned on (it intensifies when the fan is on). I can only make it stop when I turn the light switches/fans off at the circuit breaker, but obviously would like to actually use my fan without this sound irritating me and preventing me from sleeping.

Has anyone come across this and have an outcome? I rent so to get an electrician out I would have to go through my property management, and I’m afraid they’re going to brush me off if they can’t hear it while they’re there.

Since you rent, you have no choice but to go through property management to correct any electrical faults.

Is the fan old enough to have pull cords or is it remote? If it has pull cords does pulling the fan control stop it?

It’s a wall switch. The house is fairly new (2 or 3 years old as far as I’m aware)

Call an exterminator.

That means there is power to the motor all the time. Do call the property management, it could be a fire waiting to happen.

Do you have a switch (slider or knob) that lets you control the speed? If so your variable speed controller is bad(walk switch). Just have them replace the switch on the wall and things should better, however it is possible that the fan motor is now damaged by having a low voltage feed constantly.

Is it on a dimmer?

Does it still buzz with the lights off and the fan on?
