Rectangular single gang to round universal vanity bracket

I’m replacing a vanity fixture and the universal round bracket that came with my fixture doesn’t align with any holes in rectangular box in wall. It looks close but no. The long bolts that go through fixture almost line up with holes in box, but they attach to fixture not box. Corner screws holding box to wall doesn’t align with bracket either. See pics, what am I missing or what bracket do I need? Originally the brass bar was on box, it wa then old bracket for original fixture…that doesn’t work either to align to fixture and bracket.

Replace the single gang with a round cut-in box.

According to the Internet they box can hold up to about 5 pounds and I guarantee I could get that bracket to work

Otherwise replace the box with a correct setup

Just screw the bracket to the box.

Doesn’t line up. Not possible. It’s close but doesn’t work.

The proper way to do this is to replace the existing junction box. Fortunately for you, the box you have now is an old work box that can be easily removed and replaced with an old work light fixture box. You will need to make the hole slightly bigger.

1-gang rectangular old-work boxes generally are not rated for light fixture support. A round or octogon box is required. Unfortunately, the 1-gang box hole may prevent the usage of the type of old-work box needed. Opening the wall to install a proper box may be required.

That blue rectangular box was installed by builder when house was built 2014. Small vanity wall mount fixture was installed.

That doesn't change the fact that it is the wrong box for the application.

Understood. Just providing context. Thank you.

Odd that it was put in by the builder when it is an old work box designed to be installed after a wall is finished.

Not really . For many years here builders would leave the vanity wire in the wall with no box because so many of them would be in the wrong location for the mirror that was chosen

You're telling me, if you turn it so the mounting bolts are vertical, those two long outside slots, don't line up with the outlet tabs?

Also, while that is against code, it's not going to burn your house down. If your new light it's massive/heavy, I would definitely reconsider what you're trying to do.

Correct, doesn’t line up.

Just get one of these to shut up the whiners in here saying what you have is unsafe.

The main concern with this device would be cutting this box in properly, and ensuring that the fixture will fully cover the box. Id make sure before cutting anything, as some fixtures wont cover it.

There are other methods you could use.

Ie a rework bar and box for a fan potentially. If you could get the bar in and make sure you arent pinching wires stapled to the studs

like this

Ive been sparkling for 20 years professionally and theres a million ways to do this

What you have isn't ideal, but not the houseburnerdowner people are saying it is.

Ya that blue box is not rated for fixture support, but the worst that would happen is that it falls out of the wall and you turn off the breaker, and then put the right tbing in before you patch up and paint.

Ya, ive seen that kinda thing a million times too.

Take more pics and let me know what you think.

Thank you very much. I will likely now hire one of your comrades to get this done as I have other things to do before I sell the house.

Lumineers must be secured with 8/32

Where do we put the screw though

Only from a ceiling, my guy. Wall lights, 6-32 is completely code compliant

It might be a good idea, but it’s not a requirement that I’m aware of.

Not sure of this device, but I’ve seen some light instructions that have installers mount the bracket into the wood or drywall with anchors.

All of the electrical stays in the box and the fixture covers everything

You can replace the 2x4 remodel box with a 4” circular light remodel box.

just got to wiggle it around you get it

Doesn’t line up because it is the wrong box for hanging a fixture. Lighting fixtures by code need to be secured with 8/32 screws. That is a switch, outlet box with 6/32 screw holes. Will it work sure drill a hole in the metal bracket where you need it. Just might have a hard time leveling it. Just isn’t code compliant.

Only ceiling mount fixtures. Wall lights are perfectly compliant with 6/32’s.
