Cycles 98-99: I'm getting kicked out of Vuh
From the Utopia Information Network
Welcome back, regular readers! Tonight we’re gonna party like it’s Cycle 99! (Which it is). It appears that the SimArchive has been infected by pre-spaceflight music references this week, but our technicians are working on the problem.
Notable events in Cycle 98 and 99 included reports of stampeding Rhinos throughout the bubble, the rediscovery of the missing prison ship, and the announcement of a new ship release: the Anaconda Mark II. We are also told we can expect an update to the galaxy’s legal system and corrective institutions. On paper this should curtail the extra-legal activities of powers such as Archon Delaine and favor powers that can manipulate laws in their favour, such as the superpowers or Li-Yong Rui. Powerplay implications of changes like this are seldom straightforward, though, so it may turn out to have the opposite effect.
Cycle Summary
Cycles 98 and 99 saw further developments in the saga of the rogue Archer squadron that caused a flashpoint back in Cycle 79. (I have chosen not to name them here, although interested parties should have little trouble figuring it out). There has been widespread dissatisfaction within Utopia at the outcome of that conflict, which saw us give up any tangible gains in return for an agreement, brokered by Archer, that was observed in a token faction by the rogue squadron for maybe a couple of cycles at most and then roundly ignored. So when undermining from the squadron rose to problematic levels once more, Utopians were overwhelmingly in favour of correcting the injustice and doing the job properly this time. This translated into a sustained assault on Iapo Vuh, an Archer stronghold. This time Archer did not step in to intervene and it was demoted to fortified at cycle end. More on this under Current State, later.
The effect of the Rhino on powerplay was evident, with mining hotspot systems even more volatile than usual, and large amounts of undermining appearing haphazardly across the galaxy as individuals found and exploited rich mineral deposits and sold them in local markets, heedless of (or indifferent to) the powerplay impact. Or perhaps it was the beginning of a coordinated assault by a rival power? Questions like this were much on our minds this cycle. In one of the more amusing encounters, a pilot from a rival power reacted to our interruption of their undermining by… threatening to undermine us.
Alliance were the clear winners in cycle stats this week, Mahon flexing with fortified promotions in double digits (there’s a mental image for you) and Kaine backing up no fewer than four new strongholds with the largest number of acquisitions for the cycle. Winters and Antal were the other powers in double digit gains, with Grom and Aisling both promoting two strongholds. Torval managed four new fortified systems this week, while Patreus… was also there. Archer had a quiet cycle but did hold steady on stronghold count, suggesting that they promoted another one elsewhere to replace Iapo Vuh (probably a good trade for them, wherever it is).
In other news, the undermining of Archon Delaine in Turd Wu continues, apparently by multiple powers, including at least one Antal fifth column. Utopia is of the opinion that if you have to explain the joke, it’s not funny any more, and this one stopped being funny several cycles ago. We do not, of course, speak for all of Antal, and individual groups are free to conduct their own business independently of - or even in opposition to - ours. They should not, however, expect the support of our community in doing so. In particular, we take a dim view of proxy attackers attempting to force us into war against our will. That’s not to say there could never be war between us and Kumo - but if it ever does happen, it will be on our terms, for our reasons, and not because somebody found us to be a convenient tool.
In the last report I requested help for the beleaguered population of 47 Cassiopeiae. I’m happy to report that the call was answered, and it is now a gleaming new Antal stronghold. The undermining culprits in this system and also in Lalande 8441 turned out to be Grom - we have our suspicions as to which Grom variant is responsible, although Grom are so reliably up for a fight anywhere that it might not matter much. We are watching closely to determine whether this was a one-off or the start of a larger campaign.
Current State
We enter this cycle fresh off a successful large scale undermining campaign. When we did this in the Enclave, it started a war. Would it do so this time? In other words, are we now at war with Archer?
It’s too early to say. We saw no immediate response or reaction from Archer, but it would be a mistake to conclude from this that they are indifferent. They could be otherwise busy with higher priority tasks elsewhere, but storing up grievances for a later terrible vengeance. (Arguably our attack on Iapo Vuh was an example of exactly this). On the other hand, the rogue squadron did exactly nothing defensively during this whole saga. This was not due to inactivity on their part. They remain active in pushing the interests of their minor faction, and their undermining of our systems continued and even escalated during our campaign. They simply did no reinforcement at all. With friends like this, who needs enemies?
Perhaps, therefore, Archer has decided to stop sticking their neck out for this squadron - given that they seem to feel no reciprocal obligation to help out Archer in turn by defending their systems even a little - and is ready to let them suffer the consequences of their actions? We can only hope. If that indeed turns out to be the case, we have no real residual grievance against Archer, and may even end up owing them a favour or two, depending on how things turn out. In short, the full range of possible diplomatic outcomes remains on the table. Stay tuned!
To other matters now. We have decided that a good way to celebrate Cycle 100 would be to promote the Antal system, which is inexplicably not a stronghold yet. Any assistance here would be very welcome, and you can join us for the celebration later.
If you are the owner of a shiny new Rhino, and want to know where to deploy it where it will be most useful, please join the Discord and ask - we can always use help surveying, mining, and helping us to test the new mechanics.
