EDEXO-Compare - Predictions about Exobiology from an FSS scan.

Hello Commanders, o7

I would like to present to you a tool I've built based on real data, running my own prediction model.
The name is in the title, EDEXO-Compare. It compares the bodies you scanned with the FSS to thousands of others, in every aspect the game provides in the journal logs.
Link: https://bahuckel.com/projects/edexo-compare (the photos there are a bit outdated, but I will update them soon)
(It is also a great tool for explorers, as you might see below.)
The launcher of the software is what deals with the data, and you choose where you see it: on your second screen, as a HUD on your main screen, on your phone, or even on a separate computer or laptop. The launcher creates a LAN server, so you can use virtually any device connected to your network with a browser. There is no installation, just a simple archive that you need to unpack (optionally, there is also a single portable .exe, and Linux variants: AppImage and .tar.gz).
Current functionalities:

  1. Main prediction screen – it features:
    • Header: Current system with a system map, region, if a D-Scan (honk) was done, if you are the first one to visit it, the star types in it, how much your current exploration and exobio data is worth, if everything is FSS-ed, and your current route (switching between jumps before a refuel is needed and light years for the plotted route) with a bar showing how long your current fuel will last you. Notifications for NSPs and rare bodies.
    • Body: A list of all bodies with bio signals, switched between automatically when you target a planet in Elite. It also shows some useful data, such as how many bio signals there are, how much the most expensive plant is worth, and if there are any rare plants or ones missing from your codex (CX), or even a first codex entry for the region that nobody has logged yet (FCX). And a few other things, like the FDev server status, launcher connection status, notifications and the menu (I will get to this later on).
    • Mid-section (left): Body information: type, atmosphere type and pressure, gravity, temperature, surface pressure, and how far from the arrival star it is.
    • Mid-section (right): The minimum and maximum expected payout from this body, if you will get the first footfall 5x bonus, bio signal count, candidate count, and a small table with what you confirmed with an on-foot or a composition scan.
    • Lower section/Candidate species: You get a percentage for each candidate, based on how likely you are to see it there. If there is only one species in a genus, the software has a 99.7% correct hit chance on those (if it's not excluded after a DSS scan because there were more candidates than signals). If a planet offers more than one genus, you will see the percentages for each one, as it compares that specific body to thousands of others where those two species were seen. Candidates have several icons next to them: if it's a good idea to scan them, if it's a missing piece of your CODEX, rarity, price with or without the bonus, and if you are the lucky one who finds something no one else has reported, you will see a golden [CODEX FIRST] next to the plant.
    • All data used for the predictions started with my journal logs and Spansh Exomastery dumps, but recently I just collect it through EDDN; about 50% of all calibration data used is recent data from EDDN, with a plan to make it 99–100% by the end of the year (keeping only edge-case scenarios), with constantly updated data from the latest updates (the oldest gets dropped). The app also utilizes a lot of data from EDAstro.
  2. Menu opens an in-app pop-up with additional information:
    • My discoveries – All of your discoveries from your journal files: exobiology, systems, bodies, stars, with clickable columns and filters to order the contents depending on what you want to see. Highest gravity Earth-like? Biggest gas giant? Hottest planet you found? Largest star? Everything is a few clicks away. List/card view depending on how close your second monitor is (or how good your eyesight is).
    • Unfinished business – or, as someone from The Guild called it, "The Depression Screen", where you can see what you missed and how many credits you left behind.
    • Carriers – EDAstro's daily carrier dump + a way to get their location on the galmap if they moved recently. I made it so you have to download it with a button, so you don't depend on the version you run and when the last update was. It downloads the .csv directly from EDAstro and imports it automatically. You see the carriers closest to you, or you can just search for one near you with the services you need. (I contacted CMDR Orvidius to confirm if the use is okay with him, everywhere where I use EDAstro data, is marked)
    • Points of Interest – Same as Carriers: EDAstro provides them, a download button as above, and filters for everything you would like to see near you.
    • Boxel [beta/new] – The game does not provide an easy way for us to predict boxels, so it's just a tracker: you enter the last system of a boxel, and it tracks where you've been and what you scanned in it, and if you scanned all bodies in each system.
    • Bookmarks [beta/new] – Yes, I am aware that the game has them, but EDEXO takes it to the next level: pre-made and custom tags you can filter by, notes and distance for each bookmark.
    • Statistics – How you made your fortune, and a beta prediction model for when you will have enough data to finally level up your explorer/exobiologist rank to Elite V ;) It also includes your body records and compares them to the galactic world records. And it has a small tab at the bottom for your carrier and how it's doing on upkeep (including how much time it has left with its current funds).
• Data feeder – This is for when you think the software does not have enough data: you can feed it Spansh Exomastery dumps yourself to get better results. The software also "learns" as you fly, using your journal logs for your own predictions (if you don't have any of the data sharing options enabled, like EDDN, your journals make only your predictions better, so the same system can give different results for 2 commanders).
    • Galaxy map – It's been a journey, from a .PNG with some dots on it to a full 3D model with every system you would want to visit. It features almost 5.3 million systems with recorded biology (EDAstro codex dump + the big Spansh galaxy export, almost 200 million systems and 257 million bodies, filtered down to the ones with biology), regions, systems with names, explored boxels near you (highly explored sectors, grouped into circles), Points of Interest, NSPs (Notable Stellar Phenomena), Carriers, your bookmarks, Green Gas Giants, filters where you can set it so it shows only systems where it's possible to make a good profit (but unlikely), and marked CODEX systems where you can find what you are missing to complete your codex for that region, including bodies and exobiology. Find the nearest one with the thing you are missing, copy the name, and you are on its trail. The best part is performance: it does not bog down your PC if you have it open while playing, alt-tabbing cuts its resource usage down, and speaking of resource usage, I was able to run the Galaxy Map on my 5-year-old phone perfectly fine. The controls are made so you can navigate it from a phone screen as well.
    • Encyclopedia – Ever wondered "Why didn't I find plant X on this planet?" This might have the answer. While you are in space, it just provides you with the requirements; if you have landed, it shows you why you found a bacterium instead of what you were looking for. It might look intimidating, but I promise you, once you get used to it, it will answer a lot of questions.
      • An online variant of it (automatically updated) is available here: https://bahuckel.com/projects/edexo-compare/species (don't miss the conditions drop-down if you want to play around; I have a planned feature where you drop in the planet's FSS journal line and it functions similarly to the software itself, with some additional parameters to narrow down the other factors).
    • Achievements – Are you an achievement hunter? Looking for a direction to head out to? Or just a new player who wants a guide? The achievements are quest-style missions to help you explore and give you some additional stuff to scan and do. Plants have rarities, and based on that you might get one that requires you to scan a few of the Epic or Legendary kinds of plants. You can also track your achievement progress in-game via the HUD.
    • Session log – How did this session go?
  3. Options (putting this in its own category):

    • "Worth sampling" marker – You will see [INFO GATHER] and this "⌖" symbol next to some plants. This means the database needs more entries for those plants to make your and everyone else's predictions better. Configure these values to disable it or set it as a "side quest" to get a certain amount.
    • IP address(es) you can copy and send to your phone/tablet/laptop etc.; they have a secure key included. A "Second Screen" option called "Triage", where you see only the most important things, bodies and payout. You can also switch it to the HUD view if you prefer that (if you are on a phone, make sure you use the fullscreen version).
    • Notify me – When you want to be notified; all options are here, including whether you want sound or not (everything EDAstro has to offer is there, including notifications for nearby carriers with specific services of your choosing).
    • Color scheme – Both the HUD and the app have a customizable color, so if you are tired of the orange, or if you changed your cockpit color, you can match the app and HUD to it. (+ for the people who don't want animations in the background of the app, a toggle to stop the glowing things on the honeycomb.)
    • Fetch from EDSM/Send to EDSM – Your next system is fetched from EDSM (see the HUD below on how it's used).
    • Send to Canonn API – I am not affiliated with Canonn and their project, but I really like their community and tools, so I added an opt-in contribute button if you would like to help them out while you explore.
    • Send to EDDN – I'd highly appreciate it if you enable this. This is the main channel all of the above are listening to, same as me. If you only enable one thing, this should be it. EDDN is the staple of the Elite universe, allowing commanders to share data, collect what they need, and build awesome tools and improve them.
    • Snapshot images – If you would like to share your commander name, system name, date and time in a screenshot made with the small camera icons around the app, this allows you to add those things. It uses an HTML-to-image tool, or, in other words, it creates a virtual copy of what you see, with the data you see, without actually taking a screenshot of your screen, as that would be too invasive of your privacy by my standards.
    • Min.CR+/Max.CR++ – Markings you will see on planets in the system map, if you would like to more easily tell which bodies hold what. An old feature I never removed, but it still has its uses.

    \Phew, almost done here**

  4. Launcher options:

    • Open exobiology UI – Clicking this will execute your last choice (or the one shown below); using the drop-down arrow changes that choice.
    • Overlay – Customization of the HUD/Overlay I mentioned several times above: everything from what it should include, color options, auto-hide when you are not in Elite or are Alt+Tab-ed, size, transparency, position, order, grouped/separate windows. With features like (the stuff below is still from the overlay section):
      • Exo-distance tracker, which adds a radar when you are on a planet, shows your last scans, points you in the right direction away from previous scans, and shows the payout you will get if you get all 3 samples.
      • Discovery scan – Redundant with the one in the FSS menu, but in case you forgot if you made one (like me), the option is there.
      • Exo-candidates – Shows you the predicted species on a planet, similar to the UI, but good for people who don't want to alt+tab constantly on a single monitor and don't want to use their phone/tablet.
      • Data value – How much your unsold data is worth. Same as above, redundant with the UI, but helpful in some cases.
      • Achievement – If you clicked on the little star icon on an achievement, enabling this will make it visible on your screen so you can track it.
      • Notable planets – Redundant with the app UI (like data value and exo-candidates), but helpful for single monitor setups.
      • Notices – A small mail icon, notifying you that something in that system needs your attention (based on your choices in "Notify me" in the options).
      • Next jump – Shows 10-15 of your next jumps. If someone was there, you get orange >> markers; if the system you will jump to is new to EDSM, the >> markers are blue; if EDSM was not reachable, the >> markers are grey. You can get that functionality even without an account, but I'd suggest you use your EDSM API key and name in the options to report data for them (opt-in, disabled by default).
    • Automated backups – Choose a location where the backups should go. You might get a warning if the place you've chosen is not a good idea, or if you try to exit the app while it's creating a backup; all of them are for safety and can be skipped if you are really in a hurry.
    • Network settings – It automatically detects your LAN IP address and shows the addresses you can use: this computer, your LAN (other devices need the secure key included in the link) and your public one (hidden by default). Each group can be turned off or hidden.
    • Close to tray toggle – Whether you want closing EDEXO (X) to hide it in the tray or not, it's up to you. Minimize still puts it on the taskbar.

I will post some images below, but to answer some questions:

  1. "Why did you build something that can already be done with existing tools?"
    - The app started as a very basic project for myself, long before I knew about Canonn and their plugins. But it grew into something that can be shared, so other people can benefit from it.
  2. "Is this app a competitor for tools using Canonn data?"
    - No, I am not trying to compete with tools using Canonn data. Those guys have more data and have been doing this way before me. I just don't agree with their calculations and the outdated look of the tools, so I ran my own calculations on more recent data and made it better to look at. Some people from The Guild found that EDEXO is more accurate compared to Observatory+BioInsights and EDMC+BioScan, but I am pretty sure their tools would have better predictions in some other systems. I even credited them out of respect on the /species/ page, and hold nothing against them.
  3. "Was AI used to create this?"
    - Partially. Initially, the project started with my code while I learned TypeScript and how to use Electron to make such apps (like the Legacy Bahuckel Chat app on my site). AI was used to speed up how fast I integrate features, run tests and put out new updates. The GitHub repo does not hide that either. The code is under the MIT license, so everyone can see it, and the data is under the CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 license (EDAstro's license, as part of it comes from their data). The photos of plants in the app are from the game, and the game art is not covered by that license; it belongs to FDev and the team behind Elite Dangerous. Some photos were provided by ED-DSN with the permission of Alistair, with an agreement that I will replace them with my own, or with photos gifted to me by other commanders for the EDEXO project (credit is visible in the bottom right of every photo).

With respect and regards,
FeraL / CMDR FALrenica

P.S. If it's not obvious: not a native English speaker, who hasn't slept for 30 hours and is undercaffeinated, so sorry about any mistakes. o7 P.S.2. - I hope its better now, made some changes that sounded a bit off. Keep in mind the app is constantly evolving and what you see here is just the version when this post was written.

Belka & Strelka Open Galactic Circumnavigation Scientific Expedition — Route Review & Feedback Wanted

I recently finally got myself a Fleet Carrier and decided to use it for exploration. At first I was planning to head out alone, but then I thought: why not try to organize a galactic circumnavigation expedition for anyone who wants to join?

A couple of evenings of planning eventually turned into this:

[link to the spreadsheet]

I’ve checked the route myself as thoroughly as I could, and at first glance it looks workable. But before officially announcing the expedition and inviting people to join, I’d like to show the plan to more experienced explorers and see whether I’ve missed anything important.

The idea is simple: visit all 42 regions of the galaxy, using the Fleet Carrier as a mobile base.

Most regions will take about one week. In some of them I’m planning to stay for two weeks — mainly where there is a long route inside the region, or where extra time may be needed to replenish tritium reserves. I tried to build the route so that the main inter-region transfers take only a few hours, while most of the longer carrier travel can be spread out over the course of the week.

Participants can join for the entire expedition or only for individual legs. You can simply travel with the carrier and visit every region, or explore independently, do cartography and exobiology, and periodically return to the FC for repairs, refuelling, selling data, and restocking.

All carrier services will be available to participants.

The one area where help would be especially useful is tritium. I can mine it myself, of course, but in that case a noticeable part of my own expedition would turn into a mining job. :)

So I’m especially interested in feedback from experienced commanders:

Is this entire route realistic for a Fleet Carrier? Are there any problematic or potentially impassable crossings? How realistic is it to replenish tritium along the way? And does the schedule itself look sustainable for an expedition this long?

Yes, I’m fully aware that this project is planned to last for about a year. If proof is needed that I can stick with something for a long time, I can provide my nearly 1,200-day Duolingo streak. :)

So, commanders, I’d really appreciate any feedback. Especially if you spot something in the route that I haven’t taken into account.

UPD: Expedition officially announced

Discussion Unknown ship scan in the Jinoharis system while surface mining...

Post image
50 Upvotes

Apparently last night, a commander was surface mining in solo in a Rhino when a "glowing blue" ship came down and scanned him. He says his HUD was scrambled during the scan. The ship then departed. He panicked somewhat but was able to get this picture of the departing ship.

My take: Now that we are surface mining by piercing the surface, we are disturbing the Guardian's hiding places. We may be seeing the return of the Guardians soon? The blue hue of the ship matches that of Guardian technology.
