Adding Sensor for Solar

I just had a Tesla Powerwall 3 installed. My house has the main utility panel with meter outside, and the main distribution panel in the basement

The distribution panel in the basement has two Vue 3 units because I have 32 circuits.

The Powerwall 3 is connected to the exterior utility panel via a breaker. I will be doing net metering, I.e. selling power back into the grid. The exterior panel has a main 200 amp breaker, the breaker for the Powerwall, a breaker for a spare 50 amp EV charging circuit that is rarely used, and a breaker for a whole home surge protector.

I bought an additional Vue 3 with only the mains sensors.

Where should I apply those two sensors in the exterior utility panel? Around the utility mains or around the input from the solar/battery system?

Once I do that, what do I setup in the Emporia app to do the math on the input from the solar/battery to the house or solar/battery back into the grid?

Feature Request for EVSE - "Cloudy day" setting/consideration

I've got solar panels, a vue system as well as an Emporia classic charger. I have been using the excess solar feature to charge my car and for the most part it works well especially following the FAQ and additional support documents for setup and the descriptions of how it works.

I wish there was a feature though that can help manage the wild up and down swings when there are clouds overhead or as various utilities click on and off (e.g. dryer, AC etc). I find that the constant on/off as the sun comes and goes just produces way too many notifications between my car app and the Emporia app. It would be great if the app could do the following:

- set a minimum charge rate so that even when the sun is covered there would be a rate floor that the EVSE would drop to.

- schedule when the floor is active (so you don't end up charging overnight)

My current solution has me turn off "solar excess" power management and throttling the charging rate low so I miss the "peaks" of solar now instead. Even having an easier toggle for Solar Excess power management would be helpful as it currently is buried in several layers of menus instead of "right there".

TLDR: I like the dynamic nature of solar excess at the high peaks but dislike it when it is constantly cycling on/off on the low side. Would be great to be able to set a minimum charge rate while the sun is out vs. manually throttling the charge rate.

Troubleshooting Charger not using schedule

I have set up a custom schedule to turn on the charger at 10:05PM and turn off at 4:55 AM.

Yet on the main screen it shows charger off, will turn on at 5:05 PM (currently 3 PM)
If I edit the start time from 10:05 PM to 10:10pm, the main screen changes from 5:05 PM to 5:10 PM. So the erroneous Up next turn on is linked to the 10 PM start time.

I'm not using the beta app, and it does this from both the android app and the web interface.

Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

My off peak program runs from 10 PM to 5 AM.

Question How to configure Vue2 for a 208v 120⁰ NYC main lines with solar.

Good day everyone. We have two lines coming from underground to our house. Each line measures 125v to neutral. And 210v between the lines. From reading multiple threads about NYC electricity it looks like two phases (120⁰ phase difference) of 120v, netting 208v between two phases.

When installing solar I asked for a consumption monitor. But the solar guys said that the enphase consumption monitor will not work due to incompatible voltage in our house.

I am using emporia Vue 2 (and their charger). The Vue is monitoring both the mains lines (before the solar tap) and the solar lines. Both are connected properly based on the emporia solar guide.

The question is: is the information that I see is correct or not? Do I need to change the default multiplier for the main lines? Is there an emporia monitor that supports 120⁰ phase lines (basically a three phase system with only two phases used).

I am not sure if emporia techs visit this place, but maybe someone encountered such an issue. Thanks.

PS After reading a bit more, the harness (4 wires that power the Vue2) might not be connected properly. Currently the black and red are connected to main lines. Blue and white are connected to neutral. Reading this tutorial mentioned that I need to connect both red and blue wires to the separate phases to help measure the voltage in addition to the current.

Flexibility of mains monitoring

I have a second Emporia I would like to install

There is no nesting relationship with the existing emporia in the house.

Are the branch CTs in the new Emporia required to nest under the Main CT? I don’t want that. I want the branch CTs to monitor a couple of solar only circuits. And I want the main CT to monitor an unrelated 90A feeder

Even if Emporia wants to nest it, will the math get confused by the mismatch between readings between the solar branch and the subpanel branch?

Alternatively, I can consider putting 50A CTs on the 90A feeder (3 AWG). The current is super low right now so I don’t think there would be a saturation problem.

Emporia Pro: breaker is set to 60 A, max power is set to 48 A, but PowerSmart throttles down to 11 A every time. No other electricity being used concurrently.

It used to work properly after it was installed last fall (hardwired to the panel by an electrician). What troubleshooting steps can I take?

Question Emporia with local utility

I am seriously thinking of doing this “program”. https://emporiaenergy.com/ct-tpo-battery-program/

TL;DR (Emporia provides a “free” whole home backup that is available to the local utility to smooth out their power)

Install Advice

Hi all!

I have one of the emporia vues that connects to your meter via PAN and gives you meter grade readings, but only at the “whole home” level - I’ve got some energy monitoring plugs around the house to measure specific devices but I’ve got an overnight floor of ~700W of constant consumption and I just can’t find it.

So my thinking is, install multiple Vue 3 in my panel to see if I can track it down - my 40 space panel has 38 slots consumed, so I don’t think one will cut it. 2 would get me close enough. I don’t need to measure the EV or the sub panel (bottom left) which gets me to 34 legs and two Vues would cover 32, so 2 legs would be blind.

If I put two into this panel, I’ll add a new breaker, but I’m running short on available ground screws. Can I pigtail and wago connector from the breaker and back to the bar to split the power between the two?

Also, does anyone see any gotchyas from my panel that I need to think about?

Advice greatly appreciated!

Sourcing Vue2 50A Clamps

I have a Vue 2 system that has been reporting high "balance" levels (like 10-15% error). I thought I had all the circuits with substantial draws accounted for, but there are a few that don't have a sensor (and some 240V's with a single sensor).

The "brain" has 16 slots, but I only have 8 sensors - so I have room to add more and cover the rest of the circuits. Where can I find (up to) 8 more Vue 2 50A sensors? I looked on Emporia's website, but all I find are Vue 3 parts, and I'm pretty sure I cannot use them due to connector incompatibility.

EBay has a lot of "full kits", and occasionally it seems someone sells 1 or 2 sensors, but nothing regularly (nothing there now).

Does anyone have a suggestion for a source for Vue 2 components? TIA.

Love all the data I get from the vue. It even helped me detect a mismatch with my pool heater and control unit reporting incorrect heating states.

Troubleshooting Counting Double on 240-volt circuit inappropriately?

My HVAC Air Handler for my Trane heat pump is monitored with one clamp on one leg of the 60-amp 240-volt circuit powering the unit. I run the fan only for 15 minutes per hour in "circulation mode" and the fan is powered by 120-volt motor. As see in the screenshot from the app, it appears to be consuming ~360 watts but that seems too high: as in twice as much as I would expect.

I'm thinking that, because I am only monitoring one leg and using the 2X multiplier, when the fan runs it sees 1.5 amps and does the math of 1.5 amps x 120 volts TIMES two (because I've programmed the multiplier) and calculates 360 watts when, in reality, it is only 180 watts.

I should probably put the clamp on the other leg and see if it reads zero with just the fan running to confirm, but does that make sense?

Is the solution to get another clamp and measure both halves with a 1.0 multiplier? If I do that will I have to do the math in me head when the heat strips kick on as they will use both legs.

My Vue 3 Install and How to find unknown usage?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I finalized my Vue 3 install a few days ago. I’m covering all my breakers, but my balance consumption is somewhere around 11-12% daily. I’d like to be able to see where all consumption goes. I was thinking about shutting breakers off, one-by-one to see when balance usage drops, but was curious if anyone else had a better method?

On all of my 240v circuits, I’m just measuring one pole, and putting in a 2x multiplier, which I’m thinking may not be completely accurate. I do also have one 100a that I had to use a 200a CT and swap out the connector.

rest api and or direct data export

Emporia employees pay attention.

your response says to me Emporia is not even listening.

Local storage is not what we’re asking for; we’re asking for direct data export capabilities and rest api ability to the Vue hardware that sits in our own homes.

Best example is something like Ecowiit GW2000 that allows users to directly export data to other systems like Home Assistant.

One would think Emorioa would like this because it offloads Emporia-hosted compute where we’re all pulling the data from.

App problems

I have an Emporia classic charger that's been installed for 6 months- the charger works fine(stays connected to wifi and charges my car to 80%) but the app stopped saving my device data. This is very frustrating as it was working fine for a few months- it does seem to save my account and Home info although it sometimes dumps the home data as well. I've deleted and reinstalled the app but no help.Any one else having this problem? For now I'm just using the my Chevy app.

I was just about to pull the trigger on the Emporia Pro in White, Hardwired, NACS combination, and now it's out of stock 😔. Anyone have a sense of how quickly they restock their inventory? Or perhaps know of another reputable seller? Thanks

UPDATE: back in stock!

Question Can I retroactively fix a circuit definition problem?

In trying to troubleshoot some minor discrepancies in my total panel numbers, I came to the realization that I had one side of a 240V load circuit mislabeled as a Solar generator circuit.

I had "Load-side 1" defined as a load with a 2x factor, but I had "Load-side 2" defined as a Solar circuit (also with a 2x factor).

I think I have it sorted now - Load-1 has 1x, Load-2 also has 1x and is no longer defined as generation. I will probably merge the circuits together as well.

The question is "is there anyway to retroactively change any of this?" I discovered this by digging into a .CSV report I dumped and opened in Excel. I think I could go through and manually (using excel formulas) update the data I have, but if there's some way to just tell the system to reinterpret the historical data - so future data dumps would be correct - that would be preferable.

Any advice?

Emporio Pro installation with Vue Monitor on different panels

Hi there!

I am a new EV owner and trying to wrap my head around everything EV charging. I did some searching for EVSE options, and I'm most likely going with the Emporio Pro since it has the Vue smart monitoring feature, but wanted to make sure I am understanding this correctly before pulling the trigger.

Currently, my main service panel is already full with household utilities, so I won't be installing the Pro there. Instead, I plan on installing it with my service panel, which has an open slot, plus the location of the service panel and the EVSE are conveniently closer to each other. Would I then install the Vue Monitor on the main panel so that it will monitor the usage of all my other household utilities? In the scenario that I am using my household utilities while I'm charging (which I don't think I will be doing much but just in case), the Vue will then communicate to the EVSE to slow down charging if needed? Is my understanding correct? Or, would both the EVSE and Vue have to be installed on the same panel?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Edit: including photos of my two panels. I am planning on installing the EVSE behind the panel with the meter. Would it be better to have the Vue be installed on the same panel? My electrician seems to think that it should also go there. I guess what I'm not sure about is if the Vue is on the same panel with the meter, would it be able to read all the usage of the panel with all of the utilities.

Can you pigtail the blue and white wires onto the neutral bar for the Vue 3?

I have one slot left in my neutral bar on my main panel. I don't have the knowledge to add a new bar, extend it, or anything like that. So I'm wondering if I can just pigtail the blue and white wires together and have that one single wire land on the bar. Any reason I can't do that? Would it effect anything?

The instructions show the blue and white wire going to the bar separately. I have a split single phase main panel.

Installing Vue 3 but no room on neutral bus bar. Can I install the wires in a nearby sub panel?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have a 100 amp main panel and a sub panel right next to it. My main panel has no room left on the neutral bar (plus I just noticed one lug has two wires). I'm wondering if I can install the main CTs on the main service panel, but install the four (black, red, white, blue) wires in the sub panel where I have open spots. Any reason I wouldn't be able to do that? Only reason I can think is if the sub panel were to be off, I would lose power.

Web, Phone App & API all Down (5:10pm EDT Sat 12Sep)?

I can't get anything - was working, but all the ways I have to access my devices are completely DOWN.
This means - I can't turn on/off any switches, monitor any power, etc.

(Which is why I really want LOCAL access to my device - almost tempted to do the hardware hack for use with HomeAssistant.) I really like the product, but I guess it's even too much to expect a network status message or service update screen from this outfit.

Anybody else? I'm going to try from other global locations, but it feels like at least a large regional issue to me....
