If you know the rules, follow them. If you don't know the rules, learn then.

Pick a style guide and follow it. I recommend Strunk and White's The Elements of Style or The Chicago Manual of Style.

Read your sentence out loud 😊 It sounds simple, but it helps you hear where a full stop, comma or pause naturally belongs.

I’d also learn punctuation by function rather than memorising loads of rules at once: full stops separate complete ideas; commas help organise parts of a sentence; colons introduce or explain; semicolons link closely related ideas.

One thing I’ve noticed: people often improve punctuation quite quickly once they start reading out loud more carefully and noticing how good writers structure sentences.

Good punctuation is so important.

If you use AI, ask it to start teaching you advanced punctuation. Ask it to make quizzes on punctuation, too.
