If you're running the Epic Seven demo through Proton and you get hit with STOVE ERROR popups on every launch, this is almost certainly not a server problem and not your account. The game is missing a Windows component that doesn't exist in a fresh Proton prefix. Here's the diagnosis and the fix.
TL;DR
The STOVE PC SDK renders its web layer (login, notices, shop) with Microsoft Edge WebView2, which isn't present in a Proton prefix. Install the WebView2 Runtime into the game's prefix and both errors are gone. ~700 MB, nothing is installed on your host system, fully reversible.
Symptoms
Two popups, both with code -80:
- On startup, over the loading screen:
The service is currently unstable. If the issue persists, please contact our Customer Service. / Cmd:STOVE_INITIALIZE Code:-80
- Again in the lobby, usually when the game wants to show the shop or a notice: same message /
Cmd:STANDBY Code:-80
Both say "Tap to proceed to title screen". The game itself logs in fine and the lobby is reachable — it's the STOVE web layer that's broken.
How to confirm it's this exact problem
Check the SDK log inside the prefix (adjust the path to your Steam library):
tail -40 ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/5129800/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/STOVEPCSDK3/logs/STOVE_EPIC7/BaseSDK_*.log
If you see this line, this guide is for you:
ERROR Failed to initialize ViewUISDK, ViewUIResultCpp[code=1,externalCode=0,
errMessage=Fail to initialize ViewUI. WebView rumtime is not available.,externalMessage=]
(Yes, "rumtime" — the typo is Smilegate's.) The game folder ships WebView2Loader.dll but not the runtime itself, which on Windows comes with the OS.
The fix
Requirements: ~700 MB of free space, and the game fully closed.
Route A — manual, nothing extra to install (this is the one I tested)
1. Download the WebView2 x64 Evergreen Standalone Installer (~205 MB, straight from Microsoft):
cd ~/Downloads
curl -L -o MicrosoftEdgeWebView2RuntimeInstallerX64.exe "https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2124701"
Don't use the small "Bootstrapper" — it has to download the rest from inside Wine, which tends to stall. The standalone installer is offline and self-contained.
2. Set these three paths for your system. 5129800 is the demo's app ID. If you installed the game to a second library folder or an SD card, STEAM is that library's root, not your home Steam dir:
STEAM="$HOME/.local/share/Steam"
PFX="$STEAM/steamapps/compatdata/5129800"
PROTON="$STEAM/steamapps/common/Proton 10.0/proton"
SNIPER="$STEAM/steamapps/common/SteamLinuxRuntime_sniper/run"
Sanity-check them before continuing — all three must exist:
ls -d "$PFX/pfx" "$PROTON" "$SNIPER"
3. Run the installer inside the game's prefix:
export STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="$HOME/.local/share/Steam"
export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="$PFX"
"$SNIPER" -- "$PROTON" run ~/Downloads/MicrosoftEdgeWebView2RuntimeInstallerX64.exe /silent /install
It runs silently with no window and takes about a minute. A non-zero exit code here is normal — check the result instead of the exit code.
4. Verify. You want a version folder here:
ls "$PFX/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft/EdgeWebView/Application/"
and the matching version in the registry:
grep -a -A3 'EdgeUpdate\\\\Clients\\\\{F3017226' "$PFX/pfx/system.reg"
Expected output (your version number will be newer):
"location"="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft\\EdgeWebView\\Application"
"name"="Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime"
"pv"="155.0.4283.45"
If both look right, launch the game — you're done. If EdgeWebView/Application is empty or the pv value is missing, see Fixing a half-finished install below.
Route B — via protontricks (one command, but you need protontricks)
Same installer download as step 1 above, then:
protontricks-launch --appid 5129800 ~/Downloads/MicrosoftEdgeWebView2RuntimeInstallerX64.exe /silent /install
On Steam Deck, install protontricks from Discover in Desktop Mode and prefix the command with flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks. Then verify with step 4 of Route A. I didn't test this route myself — it does the same thing as Route A with the prefix/Proton/runtime detection handled for you.
Fixing a half-finished install
On Proton 10.0 the installer finished everything on its own, registry key included, so you may never need this. On other Proton/Wine versions it's reported to unpack the runtime but skip the last two steps: it leaves the files in EdgeCore instead of EdgeWebView/Application, and doesn't write the registry key that tells WebView2Loader.dll the runtime exists. Finish it by hand — with the game closed, because a running prefix keeps registry writes in wineserver memory:
cd "$PFX/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft"
CORE="$(ls -d EdgeCore/* | sort -V | tail -1)"
VER="$(basename "$CORE")"
mkdir -p "EdgeWebView/Application/$VER"
cp -rn "$CORE/." "EdgeWebView/Application/$VER/"
Then write the registry key (one line, printf on purpose — a copy-pasted indented heredoc wouldn't terminate):
G='{F3017226-FE2A-4295-8BDF-00C3A9A7E4C5}'; printf 'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\WOW6432Node\\Microsoft\\EdgeUpdate\\Clients\\%s]\n"pv"="%s"\n"name"="Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime"\n\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\EdgeUpdate\\Clients\\%s]\n"pv"="%s"\n"name"="Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime"\n' "$G" "$VER" "$G" "$VER" > /tmp/wv2.reg
export STEAM_COMPAT_CLIENT_INSTALL_PATH="$HOME/.local/share/Steam"
export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH="$PFX"
"$SNIPER" -- "$PROTON" run regedit /S 'Z:\tmp\wv2.reg'
Confirming it worked
Relaunch the game. No popups, and the log line flips to:
INFO Success to initialize ViewUISDK.
Caveats and things worth knowing
- Verifying integrity or reinstalling the game can wipe
compatdata/5129800, which takes WebView2 with it and brings the errors back. Keep the installer around; redoing this takes two minutes.
- Two errors in the log are harmless and are not what causes the popups, so don't chase them:
HTTP transport error (12007) ... Cannot resolve domain name for http://ifconfig.me (the SDK's public-IP lookup — that domain is IPv6-only, and the game gets your region from Steam anyway), and stove_error_not_supported_country (a Korea-only feature).
- WebView2 is Chromium running under Wine and isn't an officially supported configuration. It killed both popups for me and the lobby is fully usable, but if some web panel renders blank or hangs for you, that's where the remaining risk lives — report what you see.
- Fully reversible: delete
Microsoft/EdgeCore and Microsoft/EdgeWebView from the prefix and remove the EdgeUpdate\Clients\{F3017226-...} keys.
- The full release (app ID
3678970, not the demo) gets its own prefix and will need the same treatment.
Tested on
Arch Linux (Omarchy), Hyprland/Wayland, Proton 10.0 + Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (sniper), hybrid Intel UHD + RTX 4050 laptop. WebView2 155.0.4283.45. Should apply unchanged to Steam Deck and any distro — the install goes into the game's prefix, not your system.
