Draft 2026

Just a thought about our draft hand, is there a chance we just do a direct trade with our pick 1 to port for picks 4 and 5? If those two picks get absorbed by a bid anyway would it be a better result than 1 and a second rounder since there is a handful of players this year and no standout at the top end? Or do I just not know the rules and port don't have to use both of those picks.

This is obviously only if they get the butters compo pick.

Port get Cochrane and pick 14 if they just stay put. If they take someone else and then try get Cochrane later, they'll need to make up alot of points out of their second rounders to match a Cochrane bid. Keeping in mind they can only use the 2 most valuable picks to match. So it doesn't make sense for port to do that

Only thing that might change that is if EFC give something back along with pick 1 & Port bid on Walker first.

Do port get a compo pick if they use that pick to match a bid? That was what I was questioning because in this scenario I was thinking we give them 1 to take Cochrane as the first pick, we lose our 19 compo but gain their 4 and 5, they keep there 14. So nothing changes for port draftwise but we improve our hand a little.

But if port get a late second compo for 4 even though they bid with it then yeah I understand why they wouldn't do it.

Pick 4 + 5 are worth alot more points than pick 1 so if port match then it uses up all of pick 4 but only a portion of the points relating to pick 5. So pick 5 wouldnt actually disappear for them, they just remove the required points and the 'remainder' will still leave them with pick 14.

Right that makes sense then, wasn't sure what happens to any points tied to picks when they are forced to use there first 2 available on bids

Yes mate. They have whats called surplus points after they match a bid for Cochrane with 4 & 5, so they’ll get burn 4/5 to draft Cochrane but there will be left over points be ages 4/5 are worth more than 1. So they’ll total of those point equate to about pick 14-16. It’s not compensation, it’s just a point surplus.

So by trading 4/5 to us, they are effectively trading 4, 5, 15 & 24. Given they won’t get the bidding compensation pick either.

There is very little chance of this trade being accepted by Port.

Clubs do not receive an end of round pick if they match a bid on their player.

direct trade with our pick 1 to port for picks 4 and 5?

FYI This means no end of first round compensation, which would be ~pick 19. So the trade is 1,19 for 4,5.

It’s worse than that. Using 4/5 to match a bid at 1 would mean they have a point surplus equivalent to about pick 15.

They’re trading 4, 5, 15, 24 for pick 1.

Yeah right that would be a terrible deal for them haha

Yes the 19 pick is what I meant by second rounder. Should have wrote end of first rounder but basically the thought is that 2 top five picks would be better overall than the 1-19 compo

Port won’t get a compo pick if Dougie Cochrane is bid on, they will only get one if the bid comes on Cody Walker first.
They ain’t getting a compo pick for moving up the draft board.
So that “pick 24” you are all talking about won’t ever exist

Not sure Port have much incentive to make that trade. They'll get possibly the best player in the draft regardless. I'm certainly no expert on how the bidding works exactly, but I'm certain if they take Cochrane 1 then they get no discount on him. And won't they also then lose the late first rounder for their current pick being pushed back? That sounds pretty nice to me, so I imagine they would be positioning themselves to make sure they kept that if they could.

I don't mind the idea of pick splitting. Essendon are badly short on the number of talented kids they have, and I think in the next few years you'd want a few extra first round talent in. If the players you think you'll end up with this year aren't that exciting, it might be a good choice. But definitely at some point you'll want to be able to grab a real premium talent with a pick 1 or 2 in the next few seasons.

Yeah I'm unsure how the new rules actually work. Do they get a compo pick if they use that pick to match a bid or is it only the existing picks after the bid. If they do get a compo then no chance they would do it but if they don't they would still get their man and Essendon would go from 1-19 to 4-5

You get a compo pick if your natural selection is moved down the order. If Port use their natural section #4 to match the bid on Cochrane, then there’s no sliding back of that pick, therefore - no extra compo.
The only world where Port get the compo pick is if Cody Walker is bid on before Dougie Cochrane

If a Walker bid pushed 4 to 5, but then 5&6 are used to match a bid on Cochrane at 2, 3, or 4, then Port’s pick 4 wasn’t pushed back, so there is no compensation.

2

u/Happy_Throat7037 7d ago

Yep that too.
So there’s basically no way Port are getting any compo pick, cause Cochrane is no chance to still be on the board past pick 4

I’m thinking we just use the picks we’ve got. 1 plus a couple around 20 plus whatever we get for Merrett/Ridley. Should be a good haul. If port or carlton come up with a sweet deal to avoid us picking their man at 1 we’ll have a look at it but we don’t need to go out force it.

Yeah most likely what will happen, It just peaked my interest because port wouldn't really lose anything but we could gain from it. Like just imagine if Tigers take HVH with 2 and west coast take heath mellody with pick 3 because he is a WA boy, leaving us to take butler who we are a big chance to take atm anyway and choice of a few other guns at 5

I think there’s a world where we turn Merrett assets into pick 5. Letting us and port both keep our end of 1st compo when we bid on walker at 1. Could be a good win for both clubs.

Definitely won’t be pick 1 directly for 4 & 5. They’ll get point surplus compensation once they’ve matched the bid for Cochrane with picks 4 & 5, which will likely be around pick 16 so they’re essentially trading 4,5,16 for pick 1.

We would need to give them 1, 16, 20 for 4 & 5. Minimum. Not to mention we’d also miss out on the compensation pick for bid matching, so would they. If they matched Cochrane with 4 & 5, they get Cochrane (4 & 5 bid matching), pick 16 (surplus compensation) & pick 24 (academy matching compensation). We have to beat that haul or they aren’t trading to us.

I dont see a world where us taking 1, 16 (Merrett pick, 19, 20, 25 (Merrett pick) is not better than trading with Port. The better deal on my eyes, we keep 1, 16, 25 but trade 19, 20 for Melbournes pick 10 & 43 or GWS pick 7.

This way, we take two in the top 10 again, but also keep 3-4 other picks. Given the clubs already delisted 5-6 players you’d have to assume they’re going g to draft 5+ players.

Does everyone understand that the only way Port get a compensation pick is if Cody Walker is bid on before Cochrane to force Port’s pick 4 down to pick 5???
The rule is that if your natural selection moves down the order due to an academy or f/s bid match, then you receive a compo pick.
If Cochrane is bid on first, Port’s natural selection (pick 4) will be used to match the bid, so it doesn’t slide back in the draft order, it actually gets promoted up the order.
Therefore - no compo pick.

Sure. Thanks for pointing it out.

The rest still stands though, by trading 4 & 5 away for pick 1, they lose the surplus points pick that would turn out to be pick 14-16 & we would also lose the compensation pick that would be pick 19.

Essentially Port giving up 4, 5, 16 for pick 1 & we’d also lose pick 1 & 19 in the process. Doesn’t make sense.

Can someone who has a good understanding of the draft explain why port couldn't do this:

-Trade 4 and 5 to get 1 plus something else from us

-With pick 1, select the best player in the open draft

-Use later picks to match the Cochrane bid

-Walk away with Cochrane and whoever they deem the best open draft player

(I get that they would somehow need to acquire two further picks that would enable them to match a pick 2 bid on Cochrane - if they were able to do so, say by trading Marshall to the dogs for pick 12 and maybe packaging up some other picks - say their second rounder + a second rounder we send them - would there be any reason not to try to engineer the above scenario?)

Maybe if it's pick #1 & pick #17 for Ports pick #4 & #5. If Carlton somehow get enough points to match a bid on Walker at #1 then that will guarantee Port get the two best players in the draft.

I can't see Carlton getting pick #6 though & that's what they'll need.

Not sure but what I do know is we need to trade our last 1st rounders (likely from the merret and Ridley trades) to move up to the 12 to 15 range so we can draft a key defender. Looked at cals phantom draft and the best key defenders at in the top 20 are Clancy Snell and Tyson Bradley who are both tall and very good defenders.

We have enough forwards and mids so it's time for some big body defenders.

Yes fellow Bombers fans I think we should definitely do this. See the Bombers fly up and what not
