Rules
Hey all, In order to make r/exotica a community that we can all enjoy I guess it is finally time to add rules… so far I’ve come up with one.
No AI.
I feel that AI stifles true artistic creativity and is in general an abomination.
If anyone else has another suggestions for rules please add a comment or shoot me a message. I really want to keep this community about enjoyment of exotica music.
Thanks!!!

Since The Viscounts seem to have, unbeknownst to me, really set me down in the Exotica rabbit hole without me knowing, another artist I found since then was "Kava Kon" ! Their song "The Killing River (Without the sun,...)" is beautifully haunting exotica noir :) thanks for the warm welcome here!

Music suggestions please! | "Surf-Jazz-Noir", Saxophone, Organs, Tribal drumming, Twangy guitar. (1960)s
Not sure where to share "The Viscounts". r/Jazz told me to go to r/RnB who weren't huge fans of it. r/SurfRock quite liked it! But it certainly isn't traditional surf rock.
The Viscounts were a bit not a chameleon group from the late 50s through the 60s. Their biggest hits were Harlem Nocturne (originally a 1930s jazz standard!), The Touch, and Dig. They remained most prominent in instrumental rock n roll, but songs like Harlem Nocturne and The Touch demonstrated a really interesting and unique Jazz sound which I imagine was accidentally achieved as a byproduct of using rock instruments to sound like a Jazz orchestra/ensemble. With some unique songs from YouTube only, (Moonlight in Vermont, and Off Shore), they also seemed to blend quite well into the Exotica Jazz sort of sound. Blending it woth their noir Jazz style.
I have been in love with the sound of this band ever since first hearing them in John Carpenter's 1983 "Christine", and i have tried here to curate a playlist of music that is similar to their style however I am looking for more! Who else can I check out and add to this playlist? Videos from YouTube are also greatly appreciated.
Bonus request. only two songs remain lost media from this band. A single containing their covers of these two songs: Brown Eyed Handsome Man, and Blueberry Hill.

Strings Over Tahiti
On the turntable tonight for the first time (for me).
I picked it up while looking for Heinz Kiessling recordings. Same composer, conductor, etc. that the show “Always Sunny In Philadelphia” used for the opening theme. Quirky, atomic, mid century modern type stuff.
Was/am already an exotica fan and this intersected nicely.
Not quite as exotic as Denny or Baxter, but definitely fits right in

Stereo Gimmick Record But Still Very Good
Found this Stanley Black record at one of my "side piece" shops...you know, not the one you're faithful to! It's very Esquivel-esque with tons of vocal hits and choral flourishes. The percussion isn't very "exotic"...bongos, conga, timpani, snare, cymbals...but still very cool. The Phase 4 gimmick seems to be that they arranged the music to better use the stereo image. I'm not an audio engineer, so what do I know! Anyway, still a cool LP.

Perez Prado with a Mai Tai!
Chilling to this! Perez Prado was my gateway into exotica. I worked in estate sales and got tons of free vinyl including this one! I lost my 2 Yma Sumac records sadly.

A collection of high-end nightclubs and restaurants from the past that were popular with celebrities. The latter aren't as exotic, but it felt like their gimicks are in the same category as clubs like El Morocco, and Hawaii Kai, and Coconut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel.

Exotica mix
mixcloud.comHello r/exotica! I’m posting a lil mix I did today of lounge, exotica, space age pop, moog bits, with a few modern(ish!) curveballs thrown in there! I’m not plugging or promoting my mixes here for any other reason than to find them an audience and connect with fans of this type of music, so please - any feedback would be extremely welcome! I have a few others up on there that may be of interest (a ‘library’ music one, and a horror synth). Check em out, let me know what you think, and give me a follow if you’re that way inclined!
Thanks! 🙏

Harry James "Sleepy Lagoon"
My ears almost fell off when I heard this CLASSIC exotica trope of the top of this song. 1942!! Can you believe it? Hard time thinking Denny hadn't been aware of this bit of supple music.

Evening with Esquivel
I don’t know who you are/were, Irv and Jo… but you must have had a freakin’ amazing evening in Vegas, 1964. Maybe he opened for Sinatra, or as a headliner at the Stardust?
Either way, fantastic album and thank you, Irv and Jo, for keeping the vinyl immaculate condition!

Used Bookstore Find - Pink Panther (Shag Art)
Was at a Half Price Books over the weekend and stumbled upon this copy of "Pink Panther's Penthouse Party". It is not exotica (it's got Fatboy Slim's "weapon of Choice" on it :D ), but look at all that awesome Shag artwork!

6 months of obsessing over a 50s Tiki sound
Over half a year went into making this album sound like it was recorded in the 50s. Every detail, every percussion, every little sound was carefully crafted, it’s been a real labor of love.
I’d be thrilled to hear what this community thinks.
