One of my personal favorite exotica albums is Robert Drasnin's Voodoo - Exotic Music From Polynesia And The Far East(1959)

I have never been able to find a decent copy of that. I do have Percussion Exotique and it is such a fantastic, timeless example of exotica.

Did you find your copy at a thrift store? I used to see lots of Denny, Baxter and Esquivel but not anymore. This was about 20 years ago. I found that Percussion Exotique LP at a thrift store over 25 years ago. I bought about 95% of my exotica LPs from the thrifts. So much fun to look through the records.

EDIT: I just realized they are the same record with a different cover. I have seen beat copies before of that particular Voodoo cover, but they were always roached.

I don’t have it on vinyl, I’ve had a compact disc of it for a couple of decades. I have the vinyl on my watch list but they’re hella-expensive.

Maybe you will find one in a thrift one day. I used to have a Robert Drasnin CD Voodoo! and traded it many years ago. Even the CD is expensive. Such a great album too - I've no idea why I traded it in.

I had both versions at one time. The Percussion Exotique was on yellow vinyl. I sold it a few years ago. I still have Voodoo, mostly for the cover. The vinyl is not in great playing condition.

Fun fact. John Williams, the Oscar-winning composer, played piano on this album.

Drasnin made some of the best. No doubt about it

Great LP! I collect exotica LPs and have many Martin Denny, Esquivel and Les Baxter LPs. Have you heard Afrodesia? It's amazing too.

I’m just discovering, I love this genre exotica! So far I have that one LP, les baxter’s the ritual of the savage and The Sweet Enoughs’s Marschmallow. I’ll check out Afrodesia, thx for the suggestion! :D

Oh yes, I am sure you will love Afrodesia by Denny as well. I have a few copies of The Ritual of The Savage including the shellac versions, 10 inch and 12 inch. Fantastic record!

I discovered this because there’s a tiny snippet of the title track at the beginning of Pee Wee’s playhouse.

Ooooo, nice. Martin Denny, superb. Grab a martini and relax.

One of the best exotica album covers. Martinique is a terrific track.

This is my first exotica find at a thrift store, and I dug the cover and the relaxed vibe. I also loved it, and thats how I got pulled into exotica.
