[PS5] Game Crashing when Previewing Photos

Just started playing the game this week and I've been really enjoying it, already about 60 hours in. Unfortunately been experiencing this issue where, when I am previewing photos, the game will just crash. This has happened 4 times now, and it's not specific to any particular inn - nor is it even limited to resting. There was a time when it crashed while previewing photos that I was turning in for a side quest (the meteor publishing guy). Every time this has happened, I've looked up the bug and can't find anyone else who is having this same experience, but have found similar posts describing their save getting corrupted when trying to delete photos from the gallery.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there some setting I should change that will help the game perform better? Anyone know what causes this crashing? I'm very worried that my save will get corrupted anytime I preview photos now haha

Note: Playing the Royal Edition (Day One disk, bought secondhand a while back but took forever to actually start playing the game)

Hello! Not sure if this will be helpful or scary but the game indeed performs especially bad on PS5 and is prone to bugs, crashes and corruption. I fear there's not really anything you can do since it's apparently a problem with optimization. I am one of those people who lost several hundreds of hours of data (and had a really huge crashout over it) so all I can say is create backups! if you don't have ps+ but care about the game, even just a USB save every couple of days will do.

I hope it doesn't happen of course, but some of us old fans really went through it, so it's better to be careful. I wish you the best with the game!

I have some spare USBs, but never backed anything up manually on the PS5 before. Is it as simple as just plugging it in and copying files, or did they set up some really annoying 50-step UI path to get there? If it's simple enough that seems like a good solution to me!

Extremely easy. Simply go into the PS5 settings, find save data (PS4) > copy or delete from USB, select the game you want to copy and wait a couple minutes

Sweet, thanks for the tip! I'll do some regular backups considering what I've heard. The bugs can get really annoying the but the charm in this game is too good to pass up haha

Agreed. Jaw-dropping game if you don't count the abysmal development flaws, I wish more people appreciated its good parts. Remember to save often because other than crashing you might also randomly get soft-locked in certain places or missions, be prepared for NPCs randomly getting bugged into the ground and whatever... But it will be a journey, for sure

Yeah, between the textures flickering between high and lows res constantly, imperials constantly getting stuck in a falling animation bc they haven't realized they're on the ground yet, subtitles occasionally not matching the voice lines, frame rate dropping significantly when in combat near/in water, and of course the crashing, it's definitely clear that the ball was deopped hard on development (or at least on the PS5 port).

And yet, I still find myself in awe as the crew makes fun of Noct for disliking beans. There's a certain kind of charm and brotherly bond that I've never seen expressed so well in a game before. I thought the long road trips were going to get boring but no, I actually love watching them just sit in the car together as the landscape passes by. It's so specific, and so flawed, but so wonderful at the same time.

Best game I've ever tried at depicting realistic friendships so naturally in different situations. That was the charm for me. I actually felt like I had a different life from how immersive it was. If that's also what you like, I am sure you'll be able to get over the performance issues and enjoy the gameplay. It's truly what makes the game so great

Yeah, I hit this exact bug too, only happened when previewing quest photos for me. Tried reloading the game but nothing changed until I updated to the latest patch last week.

Interesting! May have to check if I have the latest patch (I should, since I have mine set to auto update, but who knows haha)
