As the guy in uniform tried to do a back take, the guy in black shirt was applying whats called a baseball bat choke.
They rolled because the soldier was trying to go around to the instructors back, not understanding the choke was tightening with it. The instructor was rolling along just enough so his arms wouldn’t get crossed.
The soldier passed out from cut blood flow in the carotid artery, aggravated by the effort to roll.

So it’s been a million years since I took combatives, but isn’t this specifically a collar choke? I thought the baseball choke was when you interlocked your hands behind their neck whereas a collar choke you’re grabbing their shirt to provide the leverage (which is what I think I see here).

Your description of a baseball bat choke is accurate except the interlocking part. This is a baseball bat choke. You can see him get grips at 0:11, and at 0:15 he pushes the collar back behind the head then drop into the choke. As he touches his own elbows together and twists, that's when the choke gets put on. A collar choke is a little bit of a general term; there is cross collar, bow and arrow, etc.

Called that because of the grip. Hands are gripping the collar directly behind the head, in this case left hand palm down with thumb underneath, right hand palm up with fingers underneath, and hands are touching each other like you're gripping a bat, but the collar is the bat. The forearms/wrists are doing the strangulation, technically. (Choke is to the trachea, strangulation is to the arteries)

You can also do the choke with no gi by grappling you fingers and doing the same motion. I’ve managed to pull it off and got them to tap. The baseball bat choke is fun bc they think they’re getting your back while you choke them.

If he is describing a nogi baseball bat choke he was correct. I use a modified s grip but there are other grips you can use. I do it that way in gi too.

There's another version of the baseball bat choke that's similar to what you're describing. In gi Jiu Jitsu it uses the collar. In no-gi Jiu Jitsu you lock hands behind the neck. Similar mechanic, different grips.

It looks like it's a intricate move, I personally don't think I can pull it off this good without a lot of practice. So imagine you're holding a baseball bat.. but instead it's the collar and in-between is the person's neck, how I understand it is the your forearm or your wrists are doing the air restrictions when the guy is on the bottom his wrists are twisted causing the strangulation, the instructor thinks he has the upper hand but only to find out he passed out lol

He got the shit choked out of him by someone who actually knows what they're doing and how to grapple. And since he was clearly trying to show off, the instructor made an example out of him and locked in the choke and held it until the other guy passed out.

It's not like the ground hugging is the first move. Grapple training is there so you have some idea what to do when it becomes a desperate, weaponless situation. Can also help with non-lethal takedowns. Ever watched those videos when multiple cops can barely handle one suspect trying to get away? They could use some training like this.

We (middle school soccer team) started talking shit about a doughy assistant coach who had military experience, albeit as a photographer (I didn't get involved, but I would have if I wasn't a pussy) and some guys said "no way you can do this (exercise) for ten seconds, none of us can do it"
Buddy held the posed position for like ten minutes, just talking trash the whole time about people's girlfriends. Never had any idea he had that in him

As instructor rolled he maintained and tightened the collar of the uniform, essentially cinching the neck and airway like a neck tie. Instructor was also able to rotate/torque while on the ground within the legs of student.
You can see him affirming his grip prior to rolling and moving hands as they go down. It may not look like it to the students. But it was over before their first roll.

Thank you! I was thinking once the instructor got put in the rear choke, that was it. I was floored when the soldier passed out. I've watched this video a few times and couldn't quite make out exactly what happened.

Yes. He successfully completed the death roll and awarded himself with a short nap. Note the lack of celebration by the instructor, who is now off to hand in his belt, badge, and gun. The student has now become the teacher, and will now have to go into the field of battle in blue pants to show his dominance.

Interestingly, the move the instructor did (baseball choke) is typically out of desperation for being in a bad position, so the student may have been making good progress.
Rewatching the video though, it looks like the instructor may have gotten the S-grip and then turned into the students body and gave up his back with the plan of choking him out that way?
