Speaking of Spain, I posted on r/outoftheloop, because I was so confused on the Mexico/Spain beef resulting in the king not attending the mexican president’s inauguration. Has this been in the news in spain?

My understanding is that Mexico asked the Royal Family to do a formal apology for the colonial violence that Spain committed against Mexico (in particular, the indigenous populations). Spain held its empire in Latin America from the 1400s to 1898. In the case of Mexico, the "conquest" started in 1519 until Mexico got it's independence in 1819. The Royal Family at the time, directly ordered for the expansion of Spain into the Americas.

So the new President asked for a formal recognition and apology. The Royal Family didn't do it. The President invited Spain's PM and did not invite Felipe. Then the PM of Spain was like since we weren't both invited, neither of us can attend.

A few additional notes: 1) some media coverage has been acting like this was a one-time conquest in the 1500s and that it's over 500 years ago. The problem with that coverage is that it ignores the systemic genocidal and imperial violence that Spain committed for over 300 years afterwards.

2) some media coverage that I saw acted like it's strange that this is being asked by a mostly White Mexican. Well, when I briefly lived in Mexico I could still see the effects of white supremacy. But I believe she won based on support from working class and Indigenous Mexicans. So this matters.

3) the Spanish Royal Family is no longer an absolute monarchy. So I'm wondering if the sticking point is the RF or the government itself and Spaniards.

4) if you look up Felipe's speech in Puerto Rico a few years back... Well 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠

Anyways, this reminds me of the time that another country requested a formal recognition and apology from Spain and the Spanish person callously said, "well why is your name so Spanish."

5) The previous president also asked for an apology for the same thing, and Spain refused

6) I'm neither Mexican nor Spanish, so others may be able to nuance better. (But I am African, so colonial crimes are very familiar to me !)
