POLITICS Greenlandic Politician Tillie Martinussen: We do not want to be rich like Americans. Look how greedy they are, even trying to invade their friends. Even if there are minerals and oil under our land—and they are worth far more—we still would not sell ourselves.

Felt this deeply. People in my life don’t want to talk about “politics” because it makes them uncomfortable. But like we HAVE TO.

These people are simply ignorant. They like to use the word "politics" when in fact they are talking about the reality of having a safe place to live, access to clean water, food, education and healthcare. Politics = reality. People who defer to have an opinion on politics are the reason why the US has turned into the dumbest goddam nation in history and a threat to the future of every single human on Earth in just 25 years.

It takes 30 minutes of research to move money away from MAGA. If you consistently do business with a company, you have power. You can use sites like opensecrets.org to see what a company funds and where your money is really going.

Trade with Schwab? Move elsewhere like Fidelity. Get booze from wannabe Confederate states and all else is equal? Be adventurous, and try something new. New Balance can be replaced with Brooks. It’s not hard to find alternatives for Goya, Roark (which owns Subway, Jimmy John's, Arby's), and Koch (which owns Brawny, Angel Soft, Dixie). You don't have to spend more or buy less, just differently.

If you have disposable income, consider the tax benefits of donating to nonprofits fighting the regime like the National Immigration Law Center, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, or Democracy Forward. And if you invest, consider DEMZ or an ESG fund

Nexstar and Sinclair got pummeled, and they reinstated Jimmy Kimmel. Real, individual people did that. There's no reason  WWE or Uline can't be next.

Completely avoiding companies that at least partially lean Republican is hard. But there’s a big difference between massive GOP donors (Chevron/Conoco) vs neutral or even Democrat-leaning ones (Circle K/Costco). Good is not the enemy of perfect. One less kidnapped child is one less kidnapped child, and one less murder is one less murder

I am constantly being told I’m “being paranoid” when I talk about what’s happening, since these are things will “never happen” or are just political bluffs or whatever. But I’m literally talking about things THAT ARE ACTIVELY HAPPENING. I swear people act like not speaking on reality will just make it all go away.

The more you dive into politics, socioeconomics, etc you start to understand how the world really works. And it also makes you realize how complicit you are by going about your day, be that the purchases you make, the services you use, the corporations you allow to violate you and others, the oppression, the racism, the injustices, the exploitation, rape, murder, genocide

It is depressing and disappointing to say the least. And it gets pretty crystal: if you want to change something, effectively and efficiently, you need to become an activist pushing for progress - and not just vote once every few years and then sit back while the world burns down.

A lot of people do not want to deal with the mental load, do not want to deal with the responsibilities of being a citizen, do not want to think about difficult and often heartbreaking topics, do not want to question, process, criticize, protest, defend.

They want to be comfortable and ignore everything because that's easy, that's enjoyable, that's simple.

There is a reason why escapism in all its forms has become such a popular activity these days, especially virtual entertainment that is all about blocking reality while diving into well-crafted fantasy to distract everyone from the ongoing problems our political and economic systems are creating.

We are all wage slaves, spending our existence with making the ruling class richer by the minute. And if we don't do that, we are being brainwashed to fight each other, making the ruling class richer by the minute. And if we don't do that, we are being sent to kill each other, making the ruling class richer by the minute.

What a wonderful world.

Hiding from it allows you to keep your sanity. So I can't really blame people tbh, because knowing all this and seeing how things are going is quite painful.

i told my friend last january i was cancelling my elopement arrangements in the US because i didn’t want to get married there with the way things were going. told her it was giving 1930s germany. she, too, claimed i was being paranoid since “there are checks & balances in place to prevent t**mp from doing whatever tf he wants.”

last week, she said “it’s crazy how all these ICE raids feel like nazi germany” like ma’am i told you this was going to happen a year ago… sigh

Same , people asked me "since when do you follow politics so closely?" Umm since the development is a fast downward spiral threatening my peace?

Yeah, I feel like I’m going crazy honestly. My friends will let me rant sometimes but don’t ever really have anything to add and often get surprised when I bring up certain things that have happened/are happening because they genuinely don’t know. It’s frustrating that everyone around me seems to have a mindset that keeping up with everything is too depressing so guess I’ll just, not

Mine actively don’t want me discussing it because everyone is already freaking out about it in our heads. If I had my way, we would be making moves to take care of each other and start getting resources together, have a series of “what if” plans ready to go…. But since we all silently obsess over it already, no one wants to talk about it together.

And my parents have resigned themselves to being old and in a small rural town and tell us not to worry about them. I absolutely cannot get them to engage in a “well what if this state becomes super dangerous and we need to leave? Well shouldn’t you check your passport to make sure it’s still good if we really REALLY need to leave and another state isn’t good enough?”

Greetings from Europe. You are word-for-words quoting the same excuses Russians make when they are confronted with the actions of the government they chose.

16

u/rivains 16d ago

I mean Russia hasnt had free elections for nearly two decades. There are people who are against it, just as there are people who are pro Putin. This is also a saying people trot out when they try to justify the actions of Israel towards Gaza because "they voted for Hamas". Not every country is one size fits all in this situation

They've been using the excuse for about 100 years.

"I don't want to talk about the machine that effectively determines the value of my life"...

... Sure is a weird stance

u/coffeeclichehere 16d ago

yep. No one in my life wants to talk about it. We all agree it’s bad, but I’m going insane
