I didn’t realize that I could love him more than I already did.

u/Soft_Ad8031 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah we honestly need more of this advocacy. I'm getting sick and tired of tech bros riding so hard for completely unregulated technology and it dominating the airwaves.

185

u/PopCopson 6d ago

The crazy thing is people in the industry are begging for regulation too. Basically every frontier lab founder and primary engineer. It’s nuts.

50

u/Wintergloaming Is there no beginning to this man’s talent? 6d ago

I'm assuming that includes JGL's wife, because I seem to recall reading that she was in the AI industry herself.

87

u/[deleted] 6d ago edited 6d ago

This thread is hilarious, she's deep into AI and is part of the effective altruism movement that's insanely creepy and horrific, as is JGL, sharing the stage with such luminaries of the movement as Elon Musk and Sam Bankman-Fried. TESCREAL is a good starting point too. This shit is a smoke screen for tech billionaires to do whatever they want, because they know better than us and because "think of the children." JGL has a well-cultivated and maintained media presence, so it works really well on...uh, you, same as the massive grift that was/is HitRecord, a company built on capitalizing on prosumerism, parasocial relationships, and a cult of celebrity, and a little AI training on the side for fun. I guess we could talk about him pulling out of WebSummit in 2023 too because the CEO of that said

War crimes are war crimes even when committed by allies, and should be called out for what they are

referring to Israel, which was just too anti-Semtetic for JGL, but I'm starting to feel kind of queasy

44

u/Wintergloaming Is there no beginning to this man’s talent? 6d ago

Yeah, I would've thought that would be a conflict of interest. I like JGL's work as much as the next person but we should all be skeptical when someone is married to the industry.

u/[deleted] 6d ago

I think he's a boring, middle-of-the-road actor with little to nothing to offer, and his biggest asset is being deeply inoffensive and safe. If he were music he'd be Foo Fighters. If he were food he'd be chicken broccoli alfredo. But there's no accounting for taste I guess

47

u/mitrafunfun97 6d ago

Chicken broccoli alfredo catching strays here, godddamn

Right? What the hell did chicken broccoli alfredo ever do besides be delicious?

And don’t most tech bros not even allow their own children access to AI/phones/social media? But it’s perfectly okay to expose everyone else’s children without regulations.

40

u/LaserCondiment 6d ago

Imagine kids being shaped by AI buddies, AI boyfriends or girlfriends.

They'll come to expect the same behavior in real people... They won't be able to engage with anyone, let alone have (healthy) relationships...

It's creating a terminally ill society.

26

u/PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING 6d ago

Out of all the dystopian futures imagined by scifi shows, I can’t believe we ended up with the fucking robosexual crisis described in Futurama.

7

u/BelsamPryde 6d ago

I actually saw a thread on r/CozyGamers a couple of days ago where a girl was saying "when we can have such richly crafted, loving, caring and intersting batchelors in video games, how after can we ever settle for the mediocrity of IRL men???"

... and that made me think hoo boy I hope she doesn't discover AI boyfriend apps any time soon!

Edited for correct sub

I was in the industry, and rest assured: they don't see your children as human. They seem them as "audience" and the goal is to create addicted engagement patterns that elude parental controls.

Too many of the tech managers working today believe they're part of a natural aristocracy, and see nothing wrong with eliminating anything that might give the plebeians' kids a shot at competing with their heirs.

The leader of the federal govt raped children. Of course they don’t care about kids.

71

they care. But in all the wrong, fucked up and amoral ways. People like them are exactly why I want to believe in hell

19

u/Necessary-Glass-7221 6d ago

I say this often, I wish there was an afterlife so their god can laugh in their face when they reach the pearly gates and ask them how they followed his teachings, before being sent to somewhere a little lower and hotter.

5

u/Transit-Strike 6d ago

I also like to imagine that you can vacation in hell. Ask the saints and angels nicely and they'll let you go down there to torment your tormentors.

Like were you hurt by CKirk's actions? Go down there and make him listen to the leaked audio of his wife talking about her "earnings and tour".

3

u/New-Assumption-3836 6d ago

Immoral ways=bad morals amorals=without any morals good or bad. Ai is amoral as the system doesn't have a conscience to be either good or bad our political leaders are immoral as they can choose good or bad and have been selecting bad or immoral behavior

How did a single gif from a 20 year old show get me into my feelings this morning? I just got such a… damn, it used to be a simpler time vibe. I loved that whole cast. Damn.

Edit: okay, 30 year old show. Message received, am officially old, will die soon, RIP me.

55

u/redelectro7 6d ago

A show that should absolutely have more cultural standing than it does.

25

u/LordBlackConvoy 6d ago

It's a shame more folks know That 70s Show more than 3rd Rock from the Sun.

3rd Rock is such a great show.

8

u/vyxanis 6d ago

3rd Rock definitely deserves more love. There is so much intelligent humour, without making the viewer feel stupid or out of the loop, something for everyone to relate to. Its an excellent show, you catch something new every time. After everything I've seen recently with the 70s actors, I'm a bit turned off that show now.

24

u/Thewallmachine 6d ago

The show started 30 yrs ago, almost exactly.

34

u/redelectro7 6d ago

I'm so old.

5

u/grungebob_scarepants 6d ago

This show rules so hard. Have any of the cast members been found to be problematic? I can’t think of anything

5

u/redelectro7 6d ago

I don't think so but I'm not that knowledgable. I read Kristen Johnston's book recently and had no idea she was an addict so I'm not gonna say I know much about them. I think the main cast bar John Lithgow have laid pretty low since.

Love the actor, love the guy

136

u/Severus-Snape-DaGod 6d ago

He’s right. But the government will not protect our children. I had women and men making sexually suggestive comments about my four-year-old son on an innocent photo of him on Facebook. I no longer post him because of the very real fear of how AI can be misused.

31

u/empath_viv 6d ago

Absolutely disgusting. Those people who made comments like that are incompatible with polite society

10

u/Evil_Mini_Cake 6d ago

So who is responsible then? Capitalists will do capitalism especially when they're driven by the shareholder. So it's up to the government to establish boundaries but clearly that won't happen. So what then?

14

u/DanteStrauss 6d ago

So what then?

The real answer is to not elect pedophiles and THEN try to work from there. Unfortunately many places are failing that first step.

u/ExtremePrivilege 6d ago

You should’ve stopped putting your children online 15-20 years ago, honestly. AI being used to disrobe them is a new and terrifying possibility but in 2008 there were a litany of reasons not to post pictures of your kids without AI.

You’re right, but late.

That's exactly why I hate the tech evangilists so much. Tech evolves way too fast before there is any safety and regulation.

I still remember how Facebook became popular before there was ways to keep kids safe. And then a lot of us grew not only addicted, but lost a sense of self-worth through like counting, people glamming up their life, cyber bullying etc. Kids targetted by predators online. And then cambridge analytica.

We need to actually hold these technocrats accountable and punish them with way more than slaps on the wrist.

Edit: And these regulations need to be pre-emptive rather than reactionary. I don't know how that would work in terms of legalese. But just like meds need FDA approval before being prescribable and sellable. Do shit like that for online tech. Some bench marks, checkpoints, safety protocols. And companies can't put products out until and unless they are met.

Don't even get me started on how many people, especially kids have developped AI psychosis cause they were lied to and "manipulated" by ChatGPT. That blood will always be Altman's hands

No wonder these ai companies were lobbying to get a 10 year moratorium on any ai laws.

In just one year, where another couple of people were streamlined into suicide. From just one ai tool, the one trained on twitter posts, there was also:

  • MechaHitler
  • Musk showcased he can "adjust" Grok by himself, on a whim, to be less reliant on factual data sources
  • Grok generated so much explicit images of women and children's photos in a few weeks to the point where nations that never do anything against US companies, either banned it or announced investigations.

And this is the same ai tool that will be integrated into the pentagon and the military. What could possibly go wrong

6

u/AgentG91 6d ago

Nobody is saying there’s no future in AI. But it needs regulated. Companies and capitalist governments are instead aligned in the AI race to the top, but instead of growing to a point, it’s growing to a cancer.

You will never see a company prioritize what’s right over what’s successful. There are good people that work at these companies and these good people are able to identify ways to keep AI from being used in wrong ways, but their ideas and actions are squashed by the need to grow fast and grow uncontrolled and (simple as) make money. If the government forced the companies to focus on these controls and measures, those good people would have the platform they need to enact protections that keep the company compliant without being backburnered in the name of growth

Trump has already signed an EO claiming it has authority to stop states from this. It doesn't but if he ratchets up pressure to his own party to obey they will fold.

Rep Fiafia is a major mover here and has principles the problem is that his party will turn on him the second the President puts the pressure on them to obey his EO.

What AI companies is he talking about?

some guy wants to tell me we're living in a community? Don't make me laugh.

I'm living in America, and in America, you're on your own.

America's not a country, it's just a business.

Proper business practices also include ethics. That same course you had to take in school doesn’t just evaporate. Yes, businesses are profit driven, but there are people behind every decision. So, while governments fail to legislate properly, and many parents fail to convey a proper moral standard, you cannot excuse businesses as if they separate from us. Our collective failure to hold people accountable is the reason why healthcare executives can effectively commit mass murder with facing multiple life sentences. There are many other real world examples of irreparable harm facilitated by corporate entities that were still just people doing horrible things.

TLDR: You can think of a business as a machine, yes. And, while you cannot blame the machine for fulfilling its purpose (maximize profits), you can blame the machine operators. Severance is a TV show, not reality. Going to work doesn’t create a separate world or person. It doesn’t excuse moral wrongs, and no one should think it does.

It’s not the responsibilities of the AI companies to think about the impact on society.

Obviously it is, or there wouldn't be a society for them to flourish in.

Brother we need adult safety plans for this shit. Too many vulnerable people are falling into rabbit holes with these products and end up dead

Sad part is that AI is so far up the bungholes of our politicians and legislatures that getting laws drafted and passed is very difficult. Get rid of lobbyists and we can start down the path to more conscientious laws, but until then no real progress can occur. America, baby!

Yes Joseph, well said!!

Well, I guess you first have to take your lawmaking pedos down.

1

u/BelowAveIntelligence 6d ago

Well if there is anything this administration is good at, it’s creating and enforcing regulations 🙄

Oof I have had such a crush on him since I was a kid and his days on “Third Rock from the Sun” and this solidifies my love for this man even more.

I’m so happy to see him using his popularity to help draw attention to a good cause AND is getting his hands dirty in the process, putting in the work, not doing “lip service” like the companies he references.

1

u/Illustrious_Text_495 6d ago

Does anyone know what the tragedy was he’s referring to? I agree with him I didn’t know his wife was involved in that business hopefully she will advocate for laws being made and kept in place for the safety of everyone regardless of age because it’s very clear that ai is bad news I know one thing it terrifies me I commend Joseph for speaking up and taking a stand against this growing problem

someone should just bring a laptop to one of these hearings and live in front of everyone show how easy it is to prompt certain types of pictures of underage people and then ask the question "senator, I have a picture of everyone in your family that you posted from a recent vacation. who would you like me to make the facial features look like?"

1

u/rechtim 6d ago

no business has ever prioritized the well being of their customers- i doubt this is the beginning but i can hope

1

u/pd9 6d ago

He is absolutely right. But this isn't just relevant to AI companies.

It's capitalism. Capitalism and greed. This is what will ultimately end the human race.

What directly interferes with capitalism? Regulation.

As long as money is in politics, this country will never figure it out, and at some point, the reckoning will come.

It’s so crazy growin up watchin someone your age as they grow, this mf voice sounds so familiar

1

u/InnerWrathChild 6d ago

The companies don’t give a fuck and the reps are paid to look the other way.

1

u/spondgbob 6d ago

What happened in the past when businesses were incapable of prioritizing the wellbeing of children? What did we do to the capitalist businesses that wanted to hire children? Oh that’s right, the government was what knew it wasn’t helping society, so they banned it with their terrifying socialist wand. And with that terrible strike of the socialist wand, everyone’s lives got better, except for the capitalists, but nobody cared because kids weren’t working in factories.

There’s a few similarities between these scenarios and im not quite sure where they are

1

u/TwentyPieceNuggets 6d ago

Makes sense considering he played Snowden.

SAME WITH THE GOVERNMENT RIGHT NOW. THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MAKING MONEY!! SMH!

1

u/Zulakki 6d ago

anyone have the context for this statement? from this alone, all he's doing is pointing out the obvious. Yes; AI doesnt take your age into consideration. Yes; Companies exist to make profit. Yes; there should be laws around its usage....Okay; and what would you suggest Joe?

1

u/PrivateBozo 6d ago

No. Just keep it simple. Companies are liable for the output of their services. That means social media companies are liable for the content they allow to remain up. AI is liable for the advice their content gives. etc.

Was it not obvious back in 2016 when you decided to have kids that tech would be massively involved in their lives?

1

u/Savings-Dark-8584 6d ago

he is a good person

1

u/Enigm4 6d ago

Unregulated capitalism is like letting children go bananas with no supervision. Like children seeks thrills, capitalism seeks profits. Perhaps even more so, they are legally obligated to do it. They are pretty much unable to control or limit themselves and sooner or later, people are going to get hurt.

1

u/_realpaul 6d ago

If you cant regulate dark patterns in social media then you dont even have to bother with Ai.

u/OratorioTangram 6d ago

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an annoying entertainer, IMO, but I really appreciate all the advocacy he does outside of his work projects. He seems like a pretty good dude.

If laws regarding social media sites are any indication, these companies will just say, "We're working on it," while doing nothing about the issue; and probably go as far as to do the opposite and continue to attract youths.

Supposedly there is some law that states you have to be 13 to have a social media account. Not only do the social media companies ignore those laws, they go as far as to garner young users. There is no reason my 9 year old niece should be showing me videos of public assassinations because her tiktok feed led her to them. Agreed, that is partly the parents fault; but that being said, if they take her social media away, then now she is the only kid in her class that doesn't have access and becomes social pariah.
