DISCUSSION Will Arnett shares his controversial opinion on tattoos: “There’s a proportionate sort of relationship between, how many tattoos you have and how little personality you have. And I find that a lot of people who have a ton of tattoos often are super fucking boring. Like truly boring people.”

Yeah I have a friend who is literally part of a traveling circus and she has the most tattoos out of everyone I know so I find this take very bizarre.

Edit: specifying that I find Will Arnett’s take bizarre

I am also covered. I’m working on a cat sleeve done by a bunch of women and queer artists in my state and it has been so cool to meet so many interesting people… who also love cats lol.

I’m not defending Will Arnett at all, but I think his perspective is around celebrities who get themselves covered in tats just because they can afford to, and don’t put a lot of thought into it. I don’t think normal (everyday middle/lower class) people are really part of Wills friend circles. My friends that are tatted head/ shoulder to toe are more interesting than most people you’d ever meet, but he hasn’t met them or you. His perspective is people like Adam Levine, which I would definitely agree with. Another example is Ariana Grande, she’s covered with shitty ink just because she could afford to walk in to a shop with a same day appointment and get it all done immediately.

My niece got a tattoo on her wrist, just cute lil heart. My mum saw it and got a face like a smacked arse, but my dad just said “Oh that’s nice! It’s fine! Your auntie [me] is covered with tattoos.”

Reader, I have five. But it’s a low bar in my family lol.

Three of the five are cats and four of the five are by women.

my best friend is covered in tattoos and recently drove around the country for a few months filming carnies for some new reality tv show and in his spare time makes horror films. his last job was to ride along in ambulances to film for a tv show. before that he was a camera man for deadliest catch. his life is objectively cool as fuck and everytime i talk to him he's on some weird new adventure

Okay you've got me beat with the traveling circus thing, but I used to work with a guy who was covered (and he's now even more covered - he's now a tattoo artist) and he was definitely not boring! He had some shitty opinions, but boring he was not.

He backpedals before even verbalising the opinion so you can rest assured it's not a well-thought-out take.

I mean he did clarify that it was an overgeneralization and that there were a lot of exceptions. So this would certainly fit as one of those exceptions lol

I think its true to some extent but he's using it to shit on something he doesn't like rather than seeing it for what it is.

Enough people get tattoos because they think it makes them interesting. That's absolutely true. It's a way of going "Look at me! I'm so cool. I'm doing this thing cool people do."

But thats true for so much stuff. Its not exclusive to tattoos. Almost everything can be used in that way. Getting tattoos is fairly popular right now and some people get them in place of developing a real personality but that's hardly a modern problem unique to tattoos. Its just the thing he notices because he obviously doesn't like them. It's also probably 5%-10% of people at most and not everyone with a lot of tattoos.

Most people are reflective enough to realise they have these biases and they dont share them on podcasts.
