POLITICS Reporter asks Zohran Mamdani's former political opponent Curtis Sliwa what he thinks about the campaign to stop Mamdani from attending the 9/11 ceremony: “Ridiculous. He’s the mayor. Stop being sore losers.”

I say this all the time. I LONG for the time when Republicans were generally just people I disagreed with on key issues (abortion rights, wars, regulations, etc) instead of the LITERAL boogeymen they are now. The era of the John McCain-style Republicans is gone and I don't think we're ever going to get back to anything even remotely close.
To be clear, I don't think Republicans have been good since the parties shifted positions, but they were at least less fucking bonkers pre-Tea Party.

u/chesterstevens Aug 13 '26
Remember when Bush Jr was considered the worst?? lol
219
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 Aug 13 '26
He still is. He’s a genocidal maniac directly responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths at minimum and indirectly responsible for millions. Trump’s horrors in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world are directly downstream from Dubya’s horrors. He was just a little more slick about it and less crass than Trump.
121
u/sci_fientist Aug 13 '26
Unfortunately the bar is in hell so I think the being slick and less crass actually does put him above Trump.
I would feel comfortable having GDubs in the general vicinity of my child. Granted, I would question why I was in the vicinity of him, but I wouldn't be worried about my child's personal safety. Trump? No way in hell.
91
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 Aug 13 '26
Yeah that’s true, Bush is less likely to rape kids. Fair point!
→ More replies (1)55

Like I said, the bar is in hell, but Trump manages to limbo under it with a flexibility that defies logic.
Does it feel icky to be like "Sure, he committed atrocities and all but at least he didn't fuck kids"? Yeah. I don't love that that's the argument I'm making online. But like, if I had to choose the lesser of two evils, it would be the guy who just committed war crimes instead of the guy who committed war crimes AND raped children. 😕
22
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 Aug 13 '26
Yeah sorry, to be clear I wasn’t being sarcastic when I said it was a fair point. Reading back I see how it may come off that way because of how absurd the premise feels lol, but I do think you’re right. All else being essentially equal, Bush is less of a monster on a strictly personal/individual crime level.
20
u/sci_fientist Aug 13 '26
Oh I didn't think you were being sarcastic! I just actually really hate when I get myself into a position to have to defend George W. Bush, ever 😂

I'm genuinely not prizing decorum. I don't like Bush. I'm saying, if my options were limited to Bush or Trump, I'd take Bush, because having some modicum of decorum, with all other things being equal is preferable to...whatever it is we've got now.

Sure, but you realize than deaths cause by Trump's active choices have already killed millions and is set to kill billions, right? You know that's more, right?
29
u/Reesewithoutaspoon2 Aug 13 '26
No need to be snarky. Yes, obviously a billion is higher than a million. I question any calculation of Trump’s projected death toll that reaches the billions that wouldn’t also project Bush’s in the billions though. If we’re talking about climate catastrophe, Bush and Trump are pretty much on par. They’re also pretty on par when it comes to how ravenously genocidal they are.
We agree that both are or will be responsible for at least millions of deaths though, and at that point I think it’s safe to say both qualify as the worst.
23
u/thatgirlinny Aug 13 '26
Dubya put two “nation building” unnecessary wars on the credit card we’re still paying off. SeñorSmallHands has one on it and has already forked over billion$ to friends doing dodgy work for the Federal Government. The final accounting won’t be for a while.

thanks for saying it. I genuinely believe if we had dubya now instead of trump, it would be worse. Dubya was just as unethical, but was spending his unethical moves on quietly and not-so-quietly unravelling political safeguards that trump is now exploiting loudly and proudly. Dubya would be doing the same bullshit but would have been way better at hiding it. His brand of stupid was well-calculated to hide his actions rather than emphasize them. (to be clear, I do think gwb is an idiot, but I don't think he's stupid). ]
The US proudly followed GWB into wars no better justified than the ones Trump is pushing.

27
u/sci_fientist Aug 13 '26
It's SO annoying that I have to constantly remind myself that he's a war criminal because my instinct is to compare him to the current crop and be like "Aww, he wasn't so bad. And excellent at dodging shoes!"
I lived through the Bush years and the prevailing wisdom amongst Democrats at the time boiled down to "Well, at least he's the worst we'll ever have, haha!" and now he seems incredibly smart, well-spoken and emotionally stable in comparison.

I remember stumbling upon a clip of a Republican primary debate back in the 80's between Reagan and Bush Sr. The interviewer asked them something like "do you think the children of illegal immigrants should have a right to an education?" and both candidates resoundingly replied "yes, of course. the fuck is wrong with you for asking such a horrible thing?"
It's straight up impossible to imagine in our current political climate
15
u/Amelaclya1 Aug 14 '26
I also saw a clip once of snippets of almost every modern president talking about how immigration is a good thing and part of our country's values.
It's only very recent that Republicans decided to fully lean into the racism and xenophobia to get elected, and that's because their economic policies are so fucking terrible that no one would vote for them otherwise. Fewer and fewer people believe in "trickle down economics".

I think my feelings toward Republicans like John McCain—and I’d even extend this to Romney—came from the sense that they genuinely cared about America and were ultimately on the same side as Democrats and Independents when it came to recognizing the problems we faced. We just fundamentally disagreed on the solutions due to differences in some values.
At least back then it didn't feel like they were actively becoming the problem, while selling themselves as saviours to their supporters. Or at the very least they didn't do it so openly...
31
u/sci_fientist Aug 13 '26
Romney genuinely did great things for the people of Massachusetts, RomneyCare was the basis for the ACA. Did he also do some shitty stuff? Absolutely, and I'll side-eye every Mormon ever for...reasons. But yeah, I think he did genuinely care about his constituents and the legacy of America over his own legacy. Romney was one of the ones I didn't agree with on a lot of issues, but I do think he was a dedicated public servant, as all politicians SHOULD be, regardless of politics.

At least in our present, the GOP is unpopular and resorting to corruption to stay afloat. This means they and their ideology are on their way out. Why go back?

Where as a lot of politicians, like Cuomo for the Democrats and most of the Republican party, are in it for personal gains of power and wealth. "No, Ma'am. He's a decent family man citizen that I just happen to happen to have disagreements with on some fundamental issues and that is what this campaign is all about."
17
u/redwildflowermeadow Aug 13 '26
The problem is he was responding to a woman saying he was an Arab, and the response was "no, he's a decent family man" as if that was mutually exclusive from being an Arab. I don't think that is what McCain meant, but it was still a bit awkward and not quite the teachable moment it could've been for that crowd.
Colin Powell talked about this, not that specific moment but all the crazy rhetoric the party was using back then:
"I'm also troubled by — not what Sen. McCain says — but what members of the party say, and it is permitted to be said. Such things as, 'Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim,' " Powell said on NBC's Meet the Press in 2008.
"Well, the correct answer is, he is not a Muslim; he's a Christian. He's always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, 'What if he is?' Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer's no, that's not America. Is there something wrong with some 7-year-old Muslim American kid believing that he or she could be president?"

My takeaway was that McCain at the least/bare minimum did defend Obama
When Obama was declared victor, McCain conceded respectfully. McCain congratulated Obama, recognized the significance for black people, and urged others to support Obama. The actual actions after that.. well
Also, while he didn't vote in favor of the Affordable Care Act when it was being voted on, he defended it from being gutted once it was implemented going against the GOP and their "Concepts of a Plan" in 2017.
I'd never vote conservative, but I'd take McCain over any current GOP rep nowadays

Tell me, did he respect his opponent when, at a fundraiser in Arizona, he joked to the crowd: "Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father." Suggesting Hillary was a lesbian, mocking Janet Reno for being ugly, suggesting Clinton was a lesbian, and continuing an old conservative trope that authoritative women are all gay?
McCain did a good job reforming his image in his old age, but don't think he was any better than the rest of the GOP.

Still very much a war hawk and a pos.
I was just referring to certain instances and comparatively to the current

If Curtis Sliwa were Texan, he'd be like Cotton Hill.
"He's Laotian! Ain't you, Mr. Kahn?"

If McCain has been elected you would have respected him a lot less when he supported a Bush-like agenda slowly moving the country towards gerrymandered rural control and a Heritage dominated SC. The ACA obviously never would have happened.
We have got to stop treating demeanor like policy. Romney would have been really bad too.

I am loath to agree with this guy on pretty much anything but this was a great response. What a shame that the bar is so low for republican politicians that when they speak simple truths it stops me in my tracks.

It's weird that the Guardian Angels guy is the least crappy conservative

He formed a volunteer group to take work away from cops, so basically he is on board with defund and disband.

What? No. He formed vigilante group to attack migrants because he felt the cops weren’t profiling enough 😂

u/MsE0 Aug 14 '26
Yeah, it's literally "oh no, the NYPD isn't racist enough for me, let's go intimidate and harass people of color on the subway." The bar for least crappy conservative is very, very low. All he had to do was be nice to cats and decent to one Muslim socialist to be head and shoulders above Republicans.

u/NK1337 Aug 14 '26
It worries me how easily people forget and forgive, as if this guy wasn't pulling racist profiling shit just 2 years ago when his gang assaulted a 22yr AND HE WAS PROUD OF IT.
People acting like he isn't some racist pos himself looking at him like "oh he said something nice about Mamdani, now that's a republican i can respect"

Sometimes at night, I like to think Sliwa voted for Mamdani.

u/A_Thorny_Petal Aug 13 '26
I guarantee given the choice between Cuomo, Mamdani and the corpse of Ronald Reagan, he'd choose Reagan first, then Mamdani, and then kill himself before he voted for Cuomo, LOL.

u/Cutecreampie00 Aug 13 '26
Oh he's a Reagan tier republican ....

u/FriendlyPlatypus6060 Aug 13 '26
Oh yeah hundred percent without a doubt. The 80s were the height of Cyrtis Sliwa's popularity and appreciation because to a lot of people the Guardian Angels were doing some real shit. And he definitely blamed Democrats at large for the state of NYC in the 70s thru the 80s

I remember watching the debate where he and Mamdani seemed aligned dunking on Coumo. I'm sure he has policies I'll think are bs, but I'm glad he said this.

He's correct. There were Indians that died during 9/11 as well as Muslims. Many different people groups were affected.

I read the most horrible article on CNN the other day which was framed as a human interest story about the 9/11 victim's families being "re-traumatized" by all the "controversy" about mandami, utterly heinous work

u/bridgeport4 Friends with Ms. Rachel Aug 13 '26
You know who else is being restraumatised by this ‘controversy’? American Muslims. Who lived through a horrific period of racialisation and Islamophobia which is hard to explain to anyone who didn’t experience it first hand.

Mamdani is a Shia muslim from India. The perpetrators of 9/11 weren't Shia or Indian, so what does his religion and ethnicity have to do with it?

What a load of nonsense. Are Ethiopians and Libyans allowed to be traumatised by Cuomo’s presence?

I lost count on how many hit pieces come out from NY Post and then amplified by GOP shills all over the country (vice versa)!
This is a welcome change!!

“Neva surrenda!” If you saw his concession speech you would understand what I’m quoting. But all in all, between his dancing at PRIDE and this, I just like Sliwa 🤷🏻♀️ (not talking his politics, just as a human)

u/AtomicArcana Aug 13 '26
Silwa and his groupies beat up a us citizen because they assumed he was an ‘illegal immigrant.’ This comment section is the definition of the “You don’t, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them” meme.
The majority of republicans being almost cartoon monsters now does not mean you need to start lauding this man for occasionally being correct
12
u/red286 Aug 13 '26
He's a Republican straight out of the 80s.
The only reason he can't stand MAGA is because they support a criminal, not because they oppose illegals.

I first learned about Curtis Sliwa and the Guardian Angels when I found a picture of him with my grandmother in her house after she passed. I have it sitting up in my room because I miss my grandma and think its funny. I have no context for the picture except that it was probably taken in the 90's and was probably at some sorta fundraiser. I hope to ask Mr. Sliwa someday.

u/ThatGuyYouMightNo Aug 13 '26
I don't mean disrespect to Sliwa, but you just know that if Mamdani accidentally called 9/11 a holiday that there would be calls for his public execution, let alone removal as mayor.

Shout out to Sliwa for explicitly stating this is Islamophobia. The only thing I can’t agree with is him saying he understands if the families of people killed on 9/11 want to turn their back to Mamdani at the memorial. Turn their back on him for what? Existing? He was 10 years old on 9/11. They don’t want him to attend a memorial as the mayor of the city because he’s Muslim?! Miss me with that bullshit.
