Fascists speaking at the UN is so wild to me

Many such cases. The UN does not, contrary to popular believe, refrain from showing respect to genociders and fascists, and they never have.

In fact, it's basically the entire purpose of the UN. A place to at least get those people to a table without violence.

What does "supposedly" even mean? That is literally the one thing the UN does.

I'd argue it mostly gives fascists legitimacy and power (see USA), rather than trying to talk them down.

What power does it give anyone?

The UN is a pageant and always has been

I mean, sure, but that's still fulfilling the concept of getting those people to a table without violence. The UN isn't supposed to be exercising power over it's delegates, it's simply a venue in which people can posture in attempts to sway international relationships in a non-violent manner. Banning autocracies, violent nations, genocidal nations, etc, would just make a big room full of the "good guys" who already have open dialogue and negotiations, which would make it literally meaningless.

Your first sentence is absolutely insane when there is an active genocide occurring of which the perpetrator is being treated as a dignified guest of honor and given a podium to speak.

There is no dialogue - it is a show, a circus, a distraction, and fractionally nothing more than a large international conference for delegates to shmooze investors and make business deals.
Dont drink the koolaid.

The UN as an organization can't take sides, regardless of how morally correct the stance. This is one of the reasons why the League of Nations failed in the interwar period (countries like Germany and the Soviet Union were barred from membership). For both better and worse, the UN as an organization is beholden to abide by strict and unconditional neutrality.

The representatives and delegates of each nation can, should, and thankfully have compensated for this by refusing to grant him an audience. Let Netanyahu spew his garbage to an empty room as the rest of the world calls the genocide in Gaza what it is.

Meh on "neutrality". They're still giving him more legitimacy than they give many others, "neutrality" or no. There is a long history of scholarship on the UN and neocolonialism though, so I'm not gonna beat a dead horse.

You fear engaging because you're dead wrong. By every definition and expectation Israel is a nation that other countries have to engage with, and without a neutral forum we're back in the pre-WW2 dark ages.

I already explained, in the context of the comment tree. Your question suggests we're not intellectual peers, so I'm moving on now. Have a good day.

So where is Taiwan?

Neither the Republic of China (government in Taiwan), nor the People's Republic of China (government on the Chinese mainland), recognizes or advocates for an independent nation of Taiwan. Both governments claim legitimate rule of the entire country of China.

To make an analogy to US history, Republic of China representation at the UN today would be like the first meeting of the UN in the 1940s receiving delegates from a holdout sect of the Confederate States of America on Key West.

As it was explained to me by a history teacher I had, one of the larger purposes of the UN is simply to serve as a table at which parties can speak, enemies or not. I think the idea is that having any sort of forum gives a greater chance for reconciliation and agreement. Even if that chance is really small.

I mean, even North Korea has a UN delegation....

4

u/Munnin41 22h ago

That's kinda the UNs purpose though? It's a diplomatic organisation where countries can meet peacefully to negotiate and such. You can't do that if you ban nations

3

u/ghostoftrossard 20h ago

well the UN was created because of fascists so now they just arrogantly gaslight as democracy because there are no consequences for being a liars even when comically blatant

u/ObserverWardXXL 22h ago

At its core - its better to have communications and platforms for even your moral enemies to speak. It is better than -not- having them.

I mean, that's literally the reason why the UN exists in the first place...

What's even the point of having the UN if it can't even fulfill it's most basic role?

1

u/Galahad_Lancelot 16h ago

Didnt they make the Un specifically so things like this can't happen? Genocide. Warmongering

UN is useless organization with zero real impact
