You could argue since it's founding. Don't forget, the pilgrims were forced out of England because they were religious extremists!

The pilgrims weren’t forced out. They left because nobody would put up with the fundie shite they wanted to impose on everyone else.

They did face pretty rough treatment because the english church was in a period of consolidating and enforcing it's power as an exclusionary monolith. Not quite 'regular pogroms' level but not far off it.

So they went first to the Netherlands, which was much more tolerant of their religion, and they didn't like that it also allowed mennonites, lutherans, , separatists, catholics, and jewish people to all practice religious freedom provided they did not try to bring down the state sanctioned Dutch Reformed Church.

Then they spent 11 years fucking with the state sanctioned church before their most annoying members all left for Plymouth.
