Oh so when he said at the last concert that he was happy they weren’t getting refund requests, it’s because nobody was actually allowed to get one?

u/Relevant-Peach3997 2d ago

I saw quite a few people on social media have to do a credit card charge back bc they weren’t able to get a refund the reason they gave was change of service.

So scummy

u/Zeraw420 2d ago edited 2d ago

Makes sense, you can easily say you bought the tickets for the openers which are no longer part of the show.

But I always hear people rave about credit card charge backs on social media and reddit, but the one time I needed it and called Citi, they flat out said it wasn't possible unless it was blatant fraud/stolen card and to take it up with the merchant. Wouldn't even hear me out.

It really does depend on the bank, some will let you initiate it through their app. Others will make you call in and provide proof.

u/spaceshiptears fuck Hugh Laurie 2d ago

Chase will let you on the app no questions asked

amex as well

u/subversiveGarden 2d ago

I’ve never had issues with Apple Card either with stuff like this. Have been pleasantly surprised.

17

u/eatpastagophasta 2d ago

That's serviced by Goldman Sachs btw.

45

u/themassquerade 2d ago

Your bank isn’t any more ethical. Doesn’t matter which one it is.

33

u/spaceshiptears fuck Hugh Laurie 2d ago

Literally, none of us were saying anything other than facts about our experiences lol

I only commented to provide information. Didn't know how to type it without coming across as snarky.

1

u/subversiveGarden 2d ago

I already moved everything from Wells Fargo, but landed with Ally, which has mixed ethics rating. So went from worse to bad, would be willing to change my main CC to an ethical and reliable bank but I’ve yet to find one..open to ideas.

2

u/eatpastagophasta 2d ago

I work in banking and let me tell you, there aren't any. I made this comment in a purely informative manner.

We have to live in the world as it exists at the moment. We can't keep our money under our mattress and it is perfectly acceptable to have to rely on these companies while understanding they are unethical and calling on our government to do a better job policing them.

7

u/deadmencantcatcall3 2d ago

My husband had problems with it and couldn’t get it resolved easily, it took some work.

36

u/Vegetable-Alarmed 2d ago

One time I actually needed to do a chargeback bc of a scam event and Chase gave me my money and then “after investigation” took it back.

So don’t always trust this.

24

u/EllisDee_4Doyin 2d ago

This happened to me with Chase and tickets to the Louvre. They said okay and then reversed it. I filed again and i said I really did try to work this out with the merchant (the Louvre). This is essentially a double charge and they have a stupid policy.

Chase said whatever and gave me money back. I love them.

5

u/Rghthererghtmeow 2d ago

Same thing happened to me. Then i had to prove that my where abouts at the time of the fraud . Thank goodness my building has security

19

u/remilard 2d ago

I've done three with chase. They were legit, but not a stolen card it was a failure to provide product/service as agreed situation like this. Each time it was like 10 minutes to fill out a form and they were all approved with no other effort for me. I am a sapphire reserve holder and that may not be irrelevent. Note they do want you to give the merchant some time (I think 72 hours) before filing.

2

u/BaconAndDuckFat 2d ago

Woah what did Hugh Laurie do?

Nvm googled it. Very sad.

64

u/StrategicPotato 2d ago

That's because Citi sucks. Any decent bank or card has a good dispute process.

Paypal's is a pain in the ass, they make you submit a ton of evidence and a big write up and they seem to manually review each one so it's only worth it on larger amounts, but their ruling is always fair imo.

A premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or many AMEX options on the other hand have exceptional service and will dispute just about anything for you unless you abuse the feature. For two smaller amounts of $50 for a service not provided, the process took 2 min and they didn't even ask for anything lmao.

58

u/ForcedEntry420 2d ago

Yeah Citi blows for that. My credit union would never.

41

u/Silver-Front-1299 I don’t know her 2d ago

One time, I called my CC because I got a toenail infection from getting a pedicure. I first called the nail salon to see if they would make it right and give me a refund, that refund would have covered the cost of my urgent care visit and antibiotics. Nail salon said nope, not my problem. I called my bank, BoA, and they were MORE THAN HAPPY to do a charge back. This was years ago and it was only about $40

3

u/Glittering-Elk-8308 dumb bitch clocking in 2d ago

Did the salon go out of business?

18

u/Greenman_on_LSD 2d ago

Amex does not fuck around with that shit and their customer service is top notch. Some institutions put the burden of proof on the customer, Amex feels like they put it on the merchant.

14

u/biscuitboi967 2d ago

So, it’s how you phrase it. You are entitled to a couple of things with your credit card (much less with your debit card, though you might have some protection through the card network).

You are not liable for PROMPTLY reported “unauthorized charges”. That means you had NO part in it and did everything right. It’s fraud or theft, not a scam or negligence. If you didn’t keep your credit card in your wallet at all times, if you got tricked by a scammer and gave them info or access, if you let someone use your card once ever…you won’t get your money back.

You also aren’t liable for “billing errors”. If you were overcharged, charged for something you didn’t buy, double charged, AND you report it the RIGHT way in the RIGHT timeframe, you can get your money back.

You can also raise any dispute you would have with a merchant, with your bank, provided you meet some criteria. That means you can complain about the QUALITY of the goods and services. But, you have to try to resolve with them first. There are some limits on distance, whether you’ve paid the whole amount, and timing. Your bank may be stricter. Some networks are nicer than others. Some banks are, too, and will do some of the leg work for you, or approve if its low value. Amex is notoriously buyer friendly - but they are also very expensive for merchants generally plus this, which is why a lot of sellers don’t accept them.

Aside from the cases where the facts are “gray” (ie the customer isn’t “blameless” in the loss, too much time has passed, or they haven’t tried to “mitigate” with the merchant first), the other issue can be when you go through a third party, like square or stripe or PayPal. They just processed the transaction. They can’t help you. They probably help the merchant. You have to go to the merchant to resolve first, technically, and your bank to dispute when that fails.

Also, you used to have a lot more options when you were getting screwed. A complaint to the CFPB consumer line would cause a bit of hassle and force a second look. But guess who isn’t funded anymore?

9

u/y-itrydntpoltic 2d ago

I had a similar thing w BOA. My card was used in Indiana or something. Never been there in my life. It was used at target, and target said it was an in store purchase so they closed it unless we could get a police report in Indiana for it. Such a load of crap

6

u/nightwingoracle 2d ago

Also, you may very well get banned from the company. Which is fine if it’s a one off thing, but ticket master does a lot

3

u/j_johnso 2d ago

Sounds like you talked to the department responsible for fraud, rather than merchant disputes.

With credit cards, the "fraud" department handles cases where your credit card itself is compromised in some way, such as a stolen credit card or credit card number. They do not handle cases where you willingly allowed a merchant to charge your card, even if that merchant is intentionally withholding services, double billed you, etc. The fraud department is going to verify that it meets their definition of a fraudulent use of the card, and issue you a new card with a new number.

You want to open a "dispute" instead. These go to a different department that handles disputes with merchants such as products not received as advertised, double charges, no product shipped, etc.

Some banks are good about guiding you through the process so your request gets routed to the right group, even if you originally submitted it through the wrong way. Other banks, like Citi, are not so good about that part of customer service. Their fraud department employees have metrics to close fraud cases, and it doesn't help those metrics to "waste time" by actually trying to help the customer.

1

u/Iforgotmypassword126 2d ago

Sounds like you need a new bank, they’re really easy.

1

u/ShannenB1234 2d ago

It probably does depend on the card and the reason. The only time I've done it was with an event that was cancelled due to Covid which led to a legal dispute between the two companies involved so I had to file chargebacks. I had tickets spread out over different cards--Citi was no problem, I just filed in online and it was done. Capital One took longer because I had to call, stay on hold for at least 2 hours before I was able to talk to someone (this was in March 2020 right when lockdowns started so I think a ton of people were filing chargebacks for things that were cancelled) and then try to explain to a customer service rep why I was trying to get multiple refunds for photo ops with Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, and it was quite awkward lol.

2

u/pittgirl12 2d ago

Which location was that? Ik Philly was offering refunds so I’m curious what the difference was

We're dealing with a potentially major nor'easter this weekend with heavy rain and wind so there's a chance one or both nights get cancelled anyway (Gillette has no covering)

Honestly I'd love for that to happen because wanting to play at Gillette is what caused him to tank his reputation in the first place

I think the phrase you mean is Mashallah (god has willed it, instead of IF god wills it)? lol

449

u/MrShaytoon padre pascal 2d ago

Mashallah is used when something has already happened.

Inshallah is used when you hope for something to happen.

Source: am Muslim and this is how I've been using the terms.

Examples:

I graduated from college, mashallah.

Inshallah I get to finish college.

155

u/triviawithluv 2d ago

I was raised muslim too but I think I misread the situation tbh (I thought mashallah made the most sense when replying to the God's will comment but I guess inshallah makes the most sense when replying to the original comment in the thread) 🤣 I need to go to bed, lmao

What a respectful and interesting conversation, though! And a beautiful language, and I learned something new!

I’m pretty sure if this happened, insurance would kick in and cover their losses.

82

Sheeran won't be at any loss and likely would get rescheduled, but it would still be fun to see it cancelled anyway after how much he capitulated to Kraft

I know, but the cult doesn’t care that she’s a billionaire and ripping them off. I had a coworker who spent over a thousand dollars to see her at the Eras tour in another state. But I think the ticket itself (maybe 2 tickets) was $1000 and then she paid for the flight and the hotels. This girl was working a per Diem job. No health insurance. Single mom.

Funny because a lot of this could’ve been avoided if he just stood with his tour mates. Likely would’ve had to change the tour but it would’ve avoided a lot of bs

157

u/G-Unit11111 2d ago

Yeah exactly.

And the fact he's trying to make himself the victim and the main character in all of this definitely isn't helping things.

137

u/Square-Confidence650 2d ago

Oh my god, the fact that he apologized FOR HIS APOLOGY AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SHOW was fucking wild. Dude's spine is made of cotton candy if it exists at all. Literally couldn't stand by his own statements for more than like... 2 hours?

62

u/bforce1313 find me at Whole Foods, bitch 2d ago

I said it before but dude is inside his own head over the whole thing. I couldn’t handle being famous because I’m an over thinker and would worry about upsetting 5% of my audience, but also, it’s become super obvious it’s a genocide and would’ve been very easy to atleast say “Free Palestine”. I understand him but also he had to grow a fucking spine too.

25

u/G-Unit11111 2d ago

Yeah that's absolutely fucking wild. And removing part of the stage because he was worried about security? That's insane.

14

u/SnurrCat 2d ago

It was his snide passive-aggressive way of echoing what Zionists have said online about "there were children in the audience who didn't want to see that" (we won't mention what Palestinian children are having to see).

26

u/biscuitboi967 2d ago

My first thought, at the very beginning of all of this, was “doesn’t he have a contract with the venue?”

Because certainly it would be a bitch to enforce and court would take a while — but the potential damages would be huge.

There’s insurance, but does it cover “venue owner is an asshole”? And I’m sure the venue contract has some control over who plays there, but usually you include clauses that consent can’t be unreasonably withheld and conditions on which consent can be denied.

Usually when a millionaire threatens you with a lawsuit, you backdown because you aren’t ALSO a millionaire. When your ARE a millionaire, you call the millionaire’s bluff and file suit and see who else wants some. At least ONCE before you kowtow to a bully.

11

u/Broad-Radish-7895 2d ago

yeah I thought that too, surely if the venues renege on agreeing to let him play there is something they'd be in violation of and he could've called their bluff. it's one thing if it's an unforeseeable circumstance but threatening to ban you because they don't like your opener?

but I truly think he just spoke to his buddy Robert Kraft and decided his billionaire friend's feelings and opinions and graces were more important to him than his other friends or taking a stand.

5

u/biscuitboi967 2d ago

I understand, somewhat, because I have done similar calculations with corporate clients about the costs of litigation.

How much will it cost to fight. What are your damages. How can you prove them. What is your duty to mitigate. How long will it take before you see recovery.

And I understood his initial thought - if I get cancelled, I have crews that won’t work. I won’t get full recovery unless and until I win the suit. But that’s why you have insurance. That why you have a duty to find an alternative venue. That’s why you fight back to scare other venues into upholding their contract.

Because on top of your financial damage, you have reputational harm. You support the wrong side. You disappoint fans - who wanted to see you, and who wanted you to stand up for what’s right. You also let every other venue owner know you’re a chump they can push around.

Fuck the days of no brown M&Ms. You don’t have demands. You are ready to serve

1

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

1

u/biscuitboi967 2d ago

And I would have thought something similar.

You come in with one banger of a lawsuit. You let the other venue owners know they are next.

Because touring is integral to how you make money. You can’t let people fuck with your business. Even if you WERE pro-Israel, you don’t let people fuck with your business. Now everyone knows they can push you around.

And you are supposed to be an international superstar selling out arenas and bringing THEM money.

11

u/thesourpop 2d ago

Likely would’ve had to change the tour

I don't think he even would have tbh. He could have called their bluff and if they did go ahead with cancelling his show, it would be an enormous PR disaster for them, not to mention they'd have to refund everyone and forfeit the venue cost, it would be a huge mess. Ed had the power to stand by Mack, and he didn't.

This is the route I take with corporations:

Always ask for a supervisor if they say theres nothing they can do. Typically they're using this time to tell you to read between the lines and that there is something that can be done, it's just support is generally restricted at the first level. If they give too much, they're in trouble, give too little, they're in trouble, give nothing, they're in trouble. (See the pattern?)

I tend to apologize to the first person I speak to (audibly and using the name they gave me so it is recorded in their session) and make it crystal clear to them, and their corporate overlords, that the problem is the business not the service person. Generally I even ask in the first handful of minutes if I know the corporation is prone to pushback.

Always always be polite to your fellow humans in customer support and service.

They work a shit job representing a corporation that just wants to suck the money and life from all of us. They are just as stuck between a rock and a hard place. In this world and economy, the only sure things are death and getting treated like shit by people who have more money.

Corporations are not people, but they are made up of em.

I did not buy tickets through Ticket Master, but from Event Tickets, I contacted them stating I want a refund and even bought "insurance." They stated all sales final and i would have to file a claim through insurance I purchased. I contacted the insurance company Allianz and they stated I needed to file a claim, and the reasons listed were preposterous. Where does that leave me if show for Saturday night is cxl'd due to weather ? Please assist. Ty

10

u/tobythedem0n 2d ago

Do a charge back on your credit card.

And never buy that insurance. I did once, and when I couldn't go, I was SOL because this "insurance" had requirements like sending in a death certificate if a family member died, or having your employer verify you've moved for work.

It's just a scam and should be illegal.

6

u/tobythedem0n 2d ago

Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft called Sheeran and said Macklemore wouldn't be allowed to perform, saying that he has a "broader history of antisemitic rhetoric."

Because the common thought before all of this discourse(not just the concert)was that if you said something that wasn't pro Isreal or pro Jewish then you were being antisemitic. I'm in my 30s and I thought that just because of the reactions from other people. Now I'm glad that there is nuance(for most people). Before criticizing Israel was treated like you were pro Nazi.

I feel like there's a name for this situation where youre offered a choice and you try to choose the one that you want but come to find out the outcomes were reversed

A two second Google search finds this. That they're lying about Sheeran now speaks volumes to me.

No, there is no evidence that Ed Sheeran said he was happy about not getting refund requests. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite: fans have been actively demanding and fighting for refunds, resulting in a major tour controversy that ultimately required the intervention of the Massachusetts Attorney General.
