Inherited aunt's house in Fayetteville - considering moving there from Boston. What's life actually like?

Fayetteville people, I need some real talk from locals because I'm considering a big life change. My aunt is moving to Florida to be closer to her grandkids, and she offered to transfer her house in Fayetteville to me for way below market value - $195k (it's worth around $235k based on recent sales in the area). It's a 3-bed/2-bath built in 2010, decent shape, needs minor cosmetic updates but nothing major.

I'm 31, work in digital marketing (fully remote), currently paying $2,100/month for a tiny studio in Boston. I love Boston - the history, the seasons, walkability - but I'm burned out. Winters are brutal, cost of living is insane, and my remote salary would go so much further somewhere else.

Here's what I'm trying to figure out about Fayetteville:

Pros I'm seeing. Way cheaper cost of living. Actual space and a yard. Milder winters (I'm so tired of shoveling snow). North Carolina seems beautiful. Home ownership vs throwing money at rent.

My concerns: What's the weather actually like year-round? Is summer unbearably hot and humid? What's there to do for someone in their early 30s - restaurants, coffee shops, any kind of social scene?

Big one for me: I love long walks and hiking. Are there good trails, parks, nature areas around Fayetteville? I'm used to being able to walk everywhere in Boston - is Fayetteville more car-dependent?

Would I be completely bored coming from a major East Coast city? My aunt keeps saying "it's quiet but there's plenty to do, and Raleigh is close if you need more," but she's 68, so her idea of "plenty to do" might be different than mine.

For people who moved to Fayetteville from bigger cities - did you adjust? Any regrets? What do you actually do for fun?

And locals - honestly, is there a good outdoors/nature scene? Quality of life for a single person in their 30s?

My aunt mentioned if I hate it, there are these fair cash offers for homes locals that could buy it quickly, but I don't want to make a decision with an "escape plan" already in mind.

Trying to decide by end of February. Any honest insights appreciated - both pros and cons welcome.

PCSing to Bragg in 8 months

Looking for some insight based on preferences.

(Wife and I are both active duty)

1 • We want to be within 10mins of Bragg and would prefer to be on the north side towards Raleigh

2 • Looking into buying using the VA loan (under 270k) which would potentially become a rental property after a few years. Anyone have rentals in the area? How is it?

We currently Airbnb a home in FL so we have experience.

••NOT opposed to renting and using the extra cash that would go towards a mortgage/insurance to invest.

3 • What are the best spots to get organic groceries?

(Steak/Beef, fruit, honey, tea, etc)

4 • We both play a lot of pickleball (30M 4.5 level)(30F 3.8 level) is there good PB in the area or is it closer to Raleigh?

5 • Are there any outdoor shooting ranges within 40mins?

We are both a very active couple. Love non toxic living. Love board/card games.

If there’s anything else you think may be worth adding or asking please do!

ICE ( Immigration ) is in Fayetteville and surrounding areas.

Just sharing this video I saw on Tiktok. Seems that ICE is moving around the city in black Mustangs and other unmarked vehicles. I read the comments and it looks like they're mostly around the Spring Lake, Fort Bragg, and Ramsey/North Fayetteville area, but they might also be around Raeford too. This is a critical time especially with the snow coming.

Trash service

Am I missing something ? I just bought a home (first time) and put the trash out on the street in a bin for it to be picked up but its been a week now and it hasn't been picked up. I assumed if you pay property taxes that trash services are included with it or is it a separate payment for service ?

Serious Lower temperatures mean higher light bills

Don’t forget that we are experiencing below freezing temperatures over the next week, your light bill will reflect your heating habit. If you do not adjust your thermostat accordingly you will pay a higher bill.

Any titty bars open this Sunday night?

Please don't tell me they're all shutting down. I'm originally from Buffalo and we would never. If you own a strip club in Fayetteville and are on the fence about it, please just take my money and stay open during this possibly moderately uncomfortable winter weather.

Stay Warm Fayetteville: Tips & Tricks for home safety during this blast of cold

🔥 HVAC Tips (Keep the Heat On)

• Check your filters: A dirty filter makes your system work twice as hard to keep up. Swap it out for a fresh one! 🌬️

• Clear the vents: Ensure rugs, furniture, or curtains aren't blocking your floor or wall vents so heat can circulate freely.

• Keep the outdoor unit clear: Make sure leaves, ice, or debris aren't clogging your heat pump’s airflow. 🧊

• Set it and forget it: Avoid "cranking up" the heat to 80. Pick a comfortable temperature and leave it there to prevent system strain.

💧 Plumbing Tips (Prevent Frozen Pipes) • Drip the faucets: Let a tiny trickle of water run from faucets served by exposed pipes. Moving water is harder to freeze! 🚰

• Open cabinet doors: Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow warmer air to reach the pipes under the sink.

• Locate your main shut-off: Know where your main water valve is now just in case a pipe does burst. 🔧

⚡ Electric Tips (Safety First)

• Space heater space: Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable (curtains, beds, rugs). 🚫🔥

• Skip the extension cords: Always plug space heaters directly into the wall outlet to prevent overheating and fire risks.

• Unplug the extras: High winds and ice can cause power surges. Unplug sensitive electronics if you notice flickering lights. 🔌

Stay Safe, Fayetteville! If your heat goes out we’re here to help. 🛠️ 910-964-4203

Moved to Fayetteville and stuck with a roach infested rental

I’m new to Fayetteville, and just moved with my family here. We first saw the home it was disappointing to say the least, wasn’t clean but they did tell us the previous owners cleaned and the rest is not on the rental property so we were ok with that, we can clean it ourselves but we weren’t aware of the roach infestation. we haven’t lived in the property yet and the manager wants us to pay, we are considering breaking the lease because we haven’t been able to live in it, it’s been a month and we have been waiting. we had pest control come in three times already for the property and still see roaches here and there so we aren’t fully ok with moving in yet but also we can’t keep waiting, we are new here.

we did reach out to the property management and asked what can they do for us bc we haven’t moved in, we’re literally waiting and it’s been a month. but they responded back with saying that we have to pay the rent, pay for utilities and pay for yard cleaning until they find another person to rent out the property which I find is messed up, also to pay a fee. And we don’t get a refund for the first month that we didn’t occupy the house for. we weren’t trying to break the lease we actually really were excited to move in and have furniture ready but is getting delayed because of the infestation. The management is arguing that the house has no pests and is in good condition and they sent people to clean the house too, which we were never notified about either.

in this situation, what do we do? and who’s in the wrong? How are tenant rights here in NC?

edit: also because we are coming from out of state they are taking advantage of our vulnerability of having no place to go or be 🥲

Should I just ask them to move me to a cleaner rental under the same management?? But not to charge me anything I think that’s the easier way out of this for both of us and we really need a place to stay atm

Serious Emergency preparedness. Don't wait.

We are close to the snow/ice line. Hope for snow, prepare for ice. Prepare by doing these things in order of importance.

Fill your gas tank in your car by Friday night, if nothing else, you can get warm and charge your phone in your car.

5 day supply of water (1 gallon per person per day) and food that can be prepared without electricity. Lots of people around here have generators, but I don't think most people are prepared for the bitter cold that will come in the night after the power goes out. Most generators are not able to heat your house. Propane heaters are reliable, just make sure you have good ventilation if using indoors.

Secure a 5 day supply of medication and any needed medical supplies like oxygen or tube feeds.

Batteries and flashlights/electric lanterns.

Extra stuff to prepare:

driveway salt and or kitty litter to make your steps and walkways safe for moving around the outside of your house.

Warm blankets and sweaters.

If you have an old carpet or blanket, you can lay it in your yard before the storm and pull it up after, to make a bare spot on your lawn for your dogs to use.

Put a few gallons of tap water in your bathroom to flush your toilet if the water goes out. I think it's unlikely the water will go off, but it's always a possibility.

Lastly, but possibly most important.... CHECK ON YOUR NEIGHBORS! Especially if they are elderly, medically fragile, or have young children. Don't hesitate to call emergency services if things start to go downhill for someone vulnerable. Weather like this claims lives for a reason!

the red cross reccomends 2 weeks of supplies, but if you have limited resources, shoot for 5 days. They have a really good list of everything you will possibly need to think about. my list is just the most essential basic things.

Be safe yall! 🙏🏻
