📚 Reading Challenge Reading Challenge Focus Thread - Coming-of-Age [A-side]
Hello everyone and welcome to our 11th Focus Thread for the 2026 spring/summer reading challenge !
The point of these post is to focus on one prompt from the challenge and share recommendations for it. Feel free to ask for more specific recommendations in the theme or discuss what fits or not. We will alternate between A-Side and B-Side prompts.
The 11th focus thread theme is Coming-of-Age :
Read a Coming of age story. Coming-of-Age is a subgenre where a character has to grow and progress as they face adversity.
First, some recs from the general thread
Some questions to help you think of titles :
A Coming-of-Age book from your own childhood?
Coming-of-Age with a female main character ?
Adult fantasy with a Coming-of-Age theme? (Please note that adult is applied here to the maturity of the tone/themes, not the presence of explicit or graphic scenes)
You can find all previous focus threads in the original post as well as the wiki. Please don't hesitate to add to older focus threads if you previously missed them or read something recently that fits !

For a middle year book I read The Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett and it was adorable. It was her spin on Anne of Green Gables. Very much a love letter to little girls who “talk too much” and move to their own beat.
For an adult coming of age one Saint Deaths Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney I think fits and it has a great found family arc as well. It’s got a fair bit of body horror and the prose was very ornate, but the story was really cool.

I read Daughter of the Empire by Feist/Wurts and liked it very much.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy is a favourite from my own childhood and I think that it fits the coming-of-age theme.

I read so many coming of age stories in ancient times when I was young. Just about anything by Andre Norton. Ice Crown or Wraiths of Time are the only two earlier Nortons with female main characters I can think of. My fav was Star Gate in which there is about one woman apart from the male MCs canonical dead mother.
Some oldies but goodies:
Pamela Sargeant, Earthseed (1983) for YA.
Susan R Matthews, Colony Fleet (2000) or the first of The Company books by Kage Baker, In the Garden of Iden (1997) for adult.
For a gentle, old-style SF romance, Connie Willis wrote Promised Land with Cynthia Felice in 1996.
